Canada and the Battle of Vimy Ridge : 9-12 April 1914
Vimy Ridge
On the morning of April 9, 1917, troops of the Canadian Corps under General Julian Byng attacked the formidable German defences of Vimy Ridge. Since then, generations of Canadians have shared a deep emotional attachment to the battle, inspired partly by the spectacular memorial on the battlefield. Although the event is considered central in Canadian military history, most people know very little about what happened during that memorable Easter in northern France. Vimy Ridge: A Canadian Reassessment draws on the work of a new generation of scholars who explore the battle from three perspectives. The first assesses the Canadian Corps within the wider context of the Western Front in 1917. The second explores Canadian leadership, training, and preparations and details the story of each of the four Canadian divisions. The final section concentrates on the commemoration of Vimy Ridge, both for contemporaries and later generations of Canadians. This long-overdue collection, based on original research, replaces mythology with new perspectives, new details, and a new understanding of the men who fought and died for the remarkable achievement that was the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Canada in World War I

Breakthroughs in Geology: Ideas That Transformed Earth Science
Geological research does not flow steadily onwards by means of small incremental advances but can be better understood as a series of significant discoveries or changes in interpretation that transformed the way we understand the Earth. Each of these changes or new ideas encouraged a burst of activity as researchers attempted to apply them more widely in order to test their universality, and thereby their validity as a scientific theory. Probably the best example of such a transformative idea is Plate Tectonics, which, although questioned at the time it was introduced, is now universally accepted as a general principleA large number of the subsequent advances in geological understanding have been based upon this breakthrough. Clay Minerals
To a geologist, clay minerals are fine particles (< 2 #65533;m in size) and are also major constituents of rocks, sediment and soils. To an engineer, ceramicist or mineralogist, clay minerals belong to the family of phyllosilicate (or sheet silicate) of minerals, which shows properties of plasticity, shrinkage, and hardening upon drying or firing. The types and characteristics of clay minerals depends on their origin of occurrences. Commonly clay minerals are formed over a long period of time by gradual chemical decomposition of feldspar, usually silicate-bearing by low concentration of carbonic acid and other diluted acidic or alkaline solvents. Clay minerals can be grouped into four main groups: kaolinite, illite, smectite and vermiculite. Clay and clay minerals have been used since the very beginning of civilisation, and are also very important industrially. This is because of their abundant availability, inexpensiveness and unique properties. Considering its unique properties and vast applications, this book was written in order to provide various research results and compile up-to-date development on the current states of knowledge concerning clay mineral occurrences, types, properties and various uses. There are a total of eight chapters contributions by a significant number of expert authors around the world, covering topics such as the occurrence of clay in pore space of impure chalk, imparting functionality to clays, metakaolin based composite zeolite synthesis, rheological transport properties of kaolin-bentonite slurry solutions, clay minerals as adsorbents in water treatment, and metakaolin in building materials. The Tectonic Plates Are Moving!
Plate tectonics is a revolutionary theory on a par with modern genetics.
