Articulation : Reviewing a Course for Transfer Credit

Reviewing Courses for Transfer Credit

The importance of transfer credit:

Course transfers are highly beneficial and necessary for students seeking to optimize their academic journey. These transfers offer students the flexibility to explore various subjects, adapt to changing career goals, or pursue specialized fields of study.  Embracing course transfers empowers students to maximize their potential, make informed decisions about their academic path, and ultimately achieve their educational and professional aspirations.

The goal of course transfers:

The overarching goal of course transfers is to recognize and provide credit for prior learning. Direct course transfers are preferable as they ensure a seamless continuation of a student's educational journey by acknowledging the relevance and rigor of previously completed coursework. Direct course transfers are provided when the evaluation of the course meets the 80% threshold of content/texts/learning objectives etc.

In some cases, transferred credits may be unassigned. This occurs when:

  • they are used as electives within a program.
  • they can substitute for required course where the course content covers much of the course being asked for transfer but not enough to warrant direct transfer. In these cases, unassigned credits are provided and approval to use the credits as a substitute for the required course.
  • they are used as reciprocal credit. That is, if the College has received transfer credit recognition for one of its courses at another institution, the College will normally grant that institution reciprocal credit.

By offering these flexible options, course transfers promote efficient academic progression while accommodating individual learning paths, reduce barriers to education, and enhancing the overall educational experience for students.

Assessments may include (but not be limited to) (Policy 2.5.6)

  • Comparisons of detailed content elements
  • Comparison of learning outcomes
  • Comparison of general subject matter
  • Comparison of depth or breadth of coverage of subject matter, even if content details or approach are different
  • Comparison of assessment and evaluation
  • Comparison of lecture and/or lab hours
  • Documented evidence of student successes in a subsequent course.

The College endeavors to ensure timely evaluation of transfer credit. The College content experts and staff have endorsed the following time limit: it is expected that a decision will be made within six weeks of receipt of all required documentation.

It is important to keep in mind that while our college is committed to providing a high-quality education, we also acknowledge the expertise and dedication of our educational partners in delivering their courses. Each institution has its unique strengths and teaching approaches, and we believe in fostering a collaborative environment where we can learn from one another's experiences and best practices. As a community of educators who participate in articulations, we can be confident in the quality of education offered by our colleagues and appreciate the diverse perspectives they bring to the academic community.
