Lords of the Night

I’ve not done much with miniatures at all lately because I’ve been a busy boy in “real life”. However I did paint these undead gentlemen a while ago and never got around to posting them so here they are now. First of all, we have a necromancer, ready to command any passing zombies and ensure that all graves are robbed and any villagers suitably terrified.

I actually got this model with it in mind that I’d use him for a conversion, discovered that I really like him just the way he is, painted most of him and then stalled for a year or two. Never mind, he’s done now!

Alongside him we have this ghoul king, the degenerate Duke Crakmarrow from the Warhammer Underpants warband The Grymwatch.

Lastly there’s Gorath the Enforcer, taken from the Crimson Court warband.

Things are still pretty busy away from the painting desk but as ever I’ve got big plans just waiting to be accomplished so I’ll try to post a few more updates soon.

Dead Men Walking – Part 4

Time for some zombies you say? Oh go on then!

First of all there’s this lady, who had the sense to bring along her own shovel (perfect for digging up even more recruits!). She’s left over from the last time I painted a batch of AoS zombies, I must have overlooked her amid the clutter, but she’s finished now and can take her place in the undead ranks.

Next up, this chap who comes as part of the Cursed City game. I used him as a test model when I got a load of new paints a couple of years ago but then never got around to giving him the 20 minutes or so of attention he needed to be complete. I’ve corrected the error of my ways now though.

I’ve got rather mixed feelings about the Exiled Dead warband from Warhammer Underworlds. Some of them are rather nice models but some are a bit weird and the whole thing gives the impression of having been put together by committee, with various competing themes that clash more than they compliment each other. That said I did happen to have one member of the warband, this dude who apparently glories in the name Coyl Unbound.

After I painted Coyl I remembered that I had a copy of White Dwarf which contained rules for including members of the Exiled Dead in games of Warcry (which issue you ask? Well since I started this project I’ve filed it away again and now can’t lay my hands on it. I know right – some use I am…). Most of the other members of the warband have generic rules for Warcry but Regulus the zombie guardsman is also singled out for unique rules of his own. Here’s a look at the official model for those who aren’t familiar with him.

Regulus Zombie

We don’t often see zombie soldiers from Games Workshop, generally they seem to treat zombies only as a mindless rabble armed with nothing fancier than the odd bone club (or perhaps a shovel!). To be a rank-and-file soldier in the armies of the undead it seems you need to be a skeleton, divesting oneself of one’s flesh seeming to be a requirement to clear your head – in more ways than one! – and allow you to make use of swords, spears, shields, armour and the like. Anyway, I decided I wasn’t going to try to make an exact copy of Regulus, if I wanted that I’d just buy the original model, but rather to simply delve into the bits box and come up with something that looked like a zombie warrior. As I was working on him it quickly became very clear that the end result was going to look a bit silly, and very reminiscent of Turnip28 (something I still want to get around to) and the only way to make it work was to accept that and steer into the skid. Here’s what I ended up with.

Next, a particularly creepy creature called a Dregger (which looks to me like a zombie who’s acquired their own corpse-cart) from Bestiarum Miniatures.

Zombie Wudugast (6)Zombie Wudugast (1)Zombie Wudugast (2)

Lastly we have this crawling horror from Highlands Miniatures who’s turned up to the zombie apocalypse completely legless.

Braaaains!

Wight King

I know the blog has been quiet lately but don’t worry, I’m not dead! This guy is though! I got this Wight King as part of a boxset a few years ago. After spending centuries waiting in his dusty tomb he then spent centuries more waiting on my dusty painting desk but he’s up and about now and ready to lead his bony legions.

When this model was first released I didn’t really appreciate how cool he is but there’s a lot to like here; he’s nice and straightforward but packed with character, and visually interesting enough to provide a challenge without turning into a faff.

Cursed City: Ulfenwatch Skeletons – Part 2

Up until now the brave men and women of the Ulfenwatch have been forced to police the streets of the Cursed City with no more than a skeleton crew. However, if they’re serious about stopping adventurers from harassing their vampiric masters they’re going to need to drum up some more bodies so that’s been my focus recently.

And here we have the full squad including the ones I painted previously; the thin, boney line between order and anarchy.

I’m glad to get back to Cursed City; I’ve felt this project was lingering in limbo since I last painted anything for it back in August of last year. It might need to wait a little while longer before I add anything else of course but I’m chipping away at it and that’s what matters.

The Wight Stripes

Bouncing straight from one undead Blood Bowl team to another might seem like madness but as usual there is a method lurking in there somewhere. My thinking goes something like this; the core of both teams are made up of zombies and ghouls, and in fact I’ve used these interchangeably as I put together the Necromantic Horrors team. That only leaves me with a few skeletons, wights and mummies to paint to get Shambling Undead team up and running as well. So I put my necromantic energies to good use again this week and got the two mummies match ready.

Followed by a pair of Wights…

…and four Skeleton linemen.

Put them all together with some models borrowed from my Necromantic Horrors team and we have another completed team. Not bad for a weeks’ work!

Of course, this is still far from being all of the Blood Bowl players lurking on the desk – expect to see more shortly as this sporting extravaganza continues!

The Up-Town Ghouls – Part 5

It’s July, the sun is shining and everyone wants to get outdoors and run around in the fresh air. These long hot summer days are making me feel like taking up a sport so I’m going to spend this month concentrate on my Blood Bowl backlog.

First to take to the pitch are my team of Necromantic Horrors. I’ve been working on these since the start of the year so now it’s time to get the last couple of players unearthed and unleashed. After all you can’t have a team called the Up-Town Ghouls without a pair of ghouls can you?

And just like that the team are ready for action!

Of course there’s still a few other odds and ends before we can call this project done; a couple of counters…

… and a couple of markers. These actually belong with the Shambling Undead team (more on them soon) but I really like the look of them so I fast-tracked them up the queue and decided to lend them out to the Ghouls whenever they need them.

Now they just need someone to play against. I already have my Orc teams but variety is the spice of life and I’ve got plenty more Blood Bowl on the desk so let’s see what else we can get finished over the next few weeks.

The Up-Town Ghouls – Part 4

I’m aware that the last time I posted anything about this team I promised that I’d be adding a couple of ghouls to the roster and since then a) I’ve been completely distracted by other things and b) I’ve still not painted any ghouls. In the interests of redressing the balance a little though here’s a bunch more zombies.

No-one can accused this team of lacking bodies (boom boom). Here’s all the zombies I’ve painted so far.

Blood Bowl Zombie Warhammer Wudugast (5)

Anyway, next time I work on this team it really will be ghouls because those aside the team is almost done.

Cursed City: Kosargi Nightguard – Part 2

Back in March I painted up one of the Kosargi Nightguard for Cursed City and it’s been weighing on my mind ever since that I never painted the other one. Time to roll up my sleeves and do something about that!

Cursed City Kosargi Nightguard Undead Wudugast Warhammer (3)Cursed City Kosargi Nightguard Undead Wudugast Warhammer (4)

With him done both of these undead ogres are ready to go stamping through the streets and terrifying the locals…

…and I’m one set of models closer to getting the game fully painted up!

Guardians of the Grave

A project which has been on my (very long) “to do” list for a while has been to put together a Warcry warband of Vampire Counts Soulblight Gravelords. My love for this kind of undead goes back a long time so getting some shambling corpses on the table for some skirmish action was always inevitable. What’s more, by cannibalising models I’ve already painted for other projects this one was almost up and running already making it a perfect early candidate for my campaign to complete some neglected projects.

In fact the other day I realised that I was only two models short of having it finished, and the models in question were ones I’d been wanting to tackle for quite a while anyway; my pair of converted Grave Guard. I’ve always been a fan of the Grave Guard models but sadly time has not been kind to them and they do look a bit short compared to the new skeletons (actually the skeletons are a bit tall, looming over the new zombies, which is unfortunate but also just splitting hairs). Anyway, I decided to kitbash two new Grave Guard from the new skeletons, something you can read all about here. Now it was time to get them painted so here we have them; one with a great weapon…

…and one with a “sword and board”.

Grave Guard Warhammer Wudugast Soulblight Gravelords Vampire Undead Skeleton (1)Grave Guard Warhammer Wudugast Soulblight Gravelords Vampire Undead Skeleton (2)Grave Guard Warhammer Wudugast Soulblight Gravelords Vampire Undead Skeleton (3)

Add them to a mix of models from my existing undead collection and we have this little lot ready for games of Warcry. That’s a vampire lord, a kosargi nightguard, two skeletons, three zombies, a vargheist and of course, two grave guard.

Next up I want to turn my attention to one of the bigger projects on my “to do” list, I’ll aim to have something posted about that soon.

Cursed City: Kosargi Nightguard – Part 1

Hulking undead Ogres, the Kosargi Nightguard are amongst the most dangerous servants of the Cursed City’s vampire overlords. The game contains two of these mighty brutes and you would think, if I had my brain properly engaged, that I would have painted both of them at same time. I didn’t though, I got all excited about painting this one whilst the other is still lurking in the box.

He was a lovely model to paint though so at some point soon I’ll get it together to paint up his partner in crime.
