Time for some zombies you say? Oh go on then!
First of all there’s this lady, who had the sense to bring along her own shovel (perfect for digging up even more recruits!). She’s left over from the last time I painted a batch of AoS zombies, I must have overlooked her amid the clutter, but she’s finished now and can take her place in the undead ranks.

Next up, this chap who comes as part of the Cursed City game. I used him as a test model when I got a load of new paints a couple of years ago but then never got around to giving him the 20 minutes or so of attention he needed to be complete. I’ve corrected the error of my ways now though.

I’ve got rather mixed feelings about the Exiled Dead warband from Warhammer Underworlds. Some of them are rather nice models but some are a bit weird and the whole thing gives the impression of having been put together by committee, with various competing themes that clash more than they compliment each other. That said I did happen to have one member of the warband, this dude who apparently glories in the name Coyl Unbound.

After I painted Coyl I remembered that I had a copy of White Dwarf which contained rules for including members of the Exiled Dead in games of Warcry (which issue you ask? Well since I started this project I’ve filed it away again and now can’t lay my hands on it. I know right – some use I am…). Most of the other members of the warband have generic rules for Warcry but Regulus the zombie guardsman is also singled out for unique rules of his own. Here’s a look at the official model for those who aren’t familiar with him.

We don’t often see zombie soldiers from Games Workshop, generally they seem to treat zombies only as a mindless rabble armed with nothing fancier than the odd bone club (or perhaps a shovel!). To be a rank-and-file soldier in the armies of the undead it seems you need to be a skeleton, divesting oneself of one’s flesh seeming to be a requirement to clear your head – in more ways than one! – and allow you to make use of swords, spears, shields, armour and the like. Anyway, I decided I wasn’t going to try to make an exact copy of Regulus, if I wanted that I’d just buy the original model, but rather to simply delve into the bits box and come up with something that looked like a zombie warrior. As I was working on him it quickly became very clear that the end result was going to look a bit silly, and very reminiscent of Turnip28 (something I still want to get around to) and the only way to make it work was to accept that and steer into the skid. Here’s what I ended up with.

Next, a particularly creepy creature called a Dregger (which looks to me like a zombie who’s acquired their own corpse-cart) from Bestiarum Miniatures.

Lastly we have this crawling horror from Highlands Miniatures who’s turned up to the zombie apocalypse completely legless.

Braaaains!
