The Future of construction is digital

Construct-X is a joint research and development project of 34 partners from trades sector, the construction sector, the software industry as well as research and development institutions and associations. Together, new digital and networked solutions shall be developed for the construction industry and the trades, to enable trust-based and secure collaboration in planning and construction. Construct-X creates solutions for all areas of the construction industry and the trades.

Construct-X is a three-year project that develops federated data spaces based on open-source principles, a corresponding reference architecture, and cloud edge applications for the construction industry. This includes developing technologies for the multi-provider cloud-edge continuum, which will enable latency-free and secure data delivery and processing on construction sites.

Construct-X is founded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) as well as the European Union and is part of the EU initiative IPCEI-CIS, Important Project of Common European Interest- Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services. Construct-X is thus part of the EU strategy to strengthen Europe ‘s digital sovereignty.

What does Construct-X do?

The goal of Construct-X is to increase the productivity, the efficiency and transparency of building projects and the construction industry as a whole. Construct-X also considers and addresses aspects of sustainability, resource conservation, and energy efficiency.

The consistent and seamless use of data is an essential factor for this but has only been partially implemented in the diverse and heterogeneously organized construction industry. Construct-X will make a significant contribution to ensuring that future investments in the planning, construction, and operation of infrastructure and building construction projects achieve a higher and better output.

Construct-X develops digital standards, tools, and methods to enable digital collaboration in temporary value creation networks (such as construction sites). It is essential that this digital collaboration is secure and trustworthy, meaning that data can be provided and processed reliably, promptly, comprehensively, purposefully, and in a user-friendly manner, both for people and machines alike.

This requires the creation of appropriate data spaces and other technologies that can do exactly that. Construct-X develops open-source-based data spaces, a cloud-based open-source reference architecture, and relevant cloud-edge applications for a range of use cases. It is also developing technologies for the multi-provider cloud edge continuum, which will enable latency-free and secure processing of data on construction sites.

Construct-X is part of the data spaces initiatives of the Manufacturing-X project family, such as Catena-X, Factory-X, Aerospace-X, Health-Track-X, and others, and adopts important principles and data technology fundamentals.
