Install Sugar Desktop on Fedora (37-40)

In this brief article we shall perform the installation of Install Sugar Desktop Environment on Fedora 40/39/38/37 Linux system. Sugar Desktop is an open source and free to use environment designed by SugarLabs. Originally created for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project but can now be downloaded and installed on various linux dis such as Fedora.

Sugar Desktop comes with a simplistic and clean user interface. It is now cluttered and is easy to to use for everyone. It also facilitates collaborative learning among its users. On Fedora, Sugar is not the default desktop environment, but we can install it using dnf package manager. The only requirements are internet and sudo user account.

Login to your Fedora system and install Sugar Desktop from a group package.

sudo dnf group install "Sugar Desktop Environment"

Or the commands:

sudo dnf groupinstall sugar-desktop

Agree for the installation process to begin by hitting the y key in your keyboard.

After Sugar Desktop is installed in your Fedora, We recommend you reboot the system.

sudo reboot

It’s also possible to use Sugar with another Desktop Environment. For this to work, you will select your preferred Desktop Environment, GNOME on Xorg or GNOME Classic desktop, then launch terminal and run the commands below.

sudo dnf groupinstall sugar-desktop
sudo dnf install sugar-runner
sugar-runner

Sugar will then start. You need to logout from Sugar to get back to the desktop environment previously selected. Sugar is also available from Activities search in GNOME.
