Categories are used to arrange all the files and other pages in Wikimedia Commons into a hierarchical, interlinked structure. In mobile view, they are hidden unless Advanced mode is turned on in Special:MobileOptions (this option is only accessible in mobile view). They are at the bottom of virtually all pages and are sometimes linked elsewhere in a page.

In the example code

[[category:foo|bar]]

'foo' is the category name and 'bar' is the sortkey. Whatever filepage or other page that text is put on will be included in the 'foo' category under the 'B' heading.

The top of the hierarchy is category:CommonsRoot.
