Shrug Emojis

I really dont like the shrug emojis.🤷🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

They all look upset. Look at the eyes and mouth. Also, why do we need three color shirts? Whats the point of that.

Compare this emoji to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ – The emoticon looks more whimsical like “Whatcha gonna do?” It’s smiling or at least positive-neutral.

The details of design are important. It’s supposed to convey the right emotion. I often use a picture instead like these:

Im not alone in thinking this. Most emojis do not get used. (Stats on highest use emojis). They keep making more and more, but that is not helping users on a daily basis. We need to make sure the basic ones convey the right signals. We live more and more in a text based world.

I use the shrug emoji multiple times every day. I wish the head tilted a little and the face didn’t look upset. Who is in charge of that? Can we ask them to fix it?

At my old work, I didn’t realize just how many of the emojis we had were custom installed for Slack. I was much shocked and saddened when I went to work elsewhere only to find that :party-parrot: and :sad-panda: weren’t native emoji. After like 10 years of Slack at inVision, I think the back-up ZIP of the emojis was like 70mb in size. Emojis were our love language.

That said, I agree that the shrug never feels good.

As an aside, last year the “Economics of Everyday Things” did an episode on the process that emoji go through. Apparently there’s a standards body. https://freakonomics.com/podcast/emoji/
