An element (character, object, speech balloon, etc) ‘pops out’ of the panel.
A Pop Out element brings attention to itself or its action. It can also be used to produce a trompe-l’œil effect (illusion of 3D on a 2D surface).

A character reaches out for an apple. Her hand pops out of her own panel, failing to cross over to the apple panel. There is an alternative solution to the layout for this sequence.
