James A. Zeidler, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Research Scientist at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. His principal interests lie in South American prehistory and ethnography, with special emphasis on the archaeology of coastal Ecuador. His current archaeological research focuses on the Jama River Valley of northern Manabí Province where he has documented a long stratigraphic record of human settlement spanning from Formative Period times (Terminal Valdivia and Chorrera cultures) through a long tradition of Jama-Coaque culture extending up to the Spanish Conquest.

Prehispanic trade and exchange, both long-distance and shorter-distance, have been an enduring th... more Prehispanic trade and exchange, both long-distance and shorter-distance, have been an enduring theme in South American prehistory for several decades. This edited volume offers another significant contribution to that theme by examining coastal, highland Andean, and lowland Amazonian exchange in many new areas of South America, using both archaeological and ethnohistorical evidence. Notions of microverticality and ecological complementarity between highlands and lowlands predominate, with special emphasis on the products and ideas exchanged and the possible routes they followed. The volume contains 15 articles originally presented in a symposium at the 49th Congress of Americanists held in Quito, Ecuador, in July of 1997, and united here in an attractive and well-illustrated paper-bound format.

Dr. Kila, has undertaken cultural rescue missions in Iraq, Macedonia, Egypt and Libya and is affi... more Dr. Kila, has undertaken cultural rescue missions in Iraq, Macedonia, Egypt and Libya and is affiliated with several cultural heritage organizations, both in Europe and the U.S. In the Blue Shield Winner Heritage under Siege (Brill, 2012, which is Volume 1 in the book series), Dr. Kila considered the practical feasibility of the 1954 Hague Convention. Dr. Zeidler is a Senior Research Scientist at Colorado State University where he serves as Associate Director for Cultural Resources in the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMMI). He has been involved in Cultural Resource Management on US military installations since 1992 and has provided cultural heritage awareness training to US troops deployed in the Middle East and elsewhere.

We investigated foodways at Real Alto, an early Formative (4400–1800 BC) Valdivia site in coastal... more We investigated foodways at Real Alto, an early Formative (4400–1800 BC) Valdivia site in coastal Ecuador, using starch and phytoliths recovered from 50 stone tools from three residential and two ceremonial structures, as well as 46 human dental calculus samples, to explore how food reflects the social relationships and economy of the community. Maize was important in daily meals and ceremonial foods by the Middle Valdivia (2800–2400 BC), but it was only one component of an agricultural system that included yuca, arrowroot,llerén, canna, yam, jackbean, squash, gourd, chili, and cotton. Ceremonial and everyday foods at Real Alto did not differ: actions surrounding food were both domestic and ceremonial, depending on context. Households had equal access to annual crops and to root-tubers with longer growing seasons. Gelatinized starch was commonly recovered on tools, indicating the processing of cooked foods. Cultural Property Protection and the Training Continuum in the U.S. Department of Defense

With the recent rati cation of the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property i... more With the recent rati cation of the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in Times of Armed Con ict by the United States Congress and a growing recognition of other legal drivers, it is incumbent on the US military to initiate formal training in cultural heritage awareness and cultural property protection (CPP) so as to avoid the kinds of negative cases of cultural property damage or destruction that have ensued from the U.S. presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. To date however, CPP training has not been institutionalized in the Department of Defense, although it could readily be accommodated within current training on general "cultural awareness" and cross-cultural competency by emphasizing the material side of behavioral and ideational components of culture that are part of this training. This paper shows how cultural awareness training itself has gaps in what can be termed the "training continuum" (from enlistment/enrollment in a particular service to in-theatre operations as joint force teams) and how current e forts at informal cultural property protection training have attempted to bridge those gaps. Finally, broader CPP training programs in the DoD are examined in terms of the bene ts they would provide for the recognition and reporting of cultural property issues, both at the tactical and the strategic levels, so that negative impacts to the military mission and to host nation cultural properties can be avoided, minimized, or mitigated through proactive planning.

As an editorial note indicates, no illustrations were supplied by the author. The contribution does not, in any coherent way, describe the work carried out or results obtained in excavations of this area. It subordinates presentation of these results to a superficial discussion of the possible function of various areas of the Acropolis, which seems overly speculative and without grounding in research at the site. The final volume may be the most valuable contribution of this set, providing important data for comparative studies of Maya settlement. A brief but valuable introduction details the conventions of rectified mapping and recapitulates the site typology used (Fash). It includes a table presenting group composition, numbering, and investigations from the late nineteenth century to the date of publication. Since the numbering systems used have changed, this concordance is the only easy way to correlate existing reports on excavations in the Copan Valley. The maps (Long) include 24 individual 1-km blocks at 1:2,000 incorporating rectified site plans. Two maps at 1:6,250 covering the entire valley, presented in two sections each, show the relative location of these remains.
