This proposal aims to critically reflect on the notorious Italian court case involving former off... more This proposal aims to critically reflect on the notorious Italian court case involving former officials of the Municipality of Riace, in the aftermath of the September 2021 first instance sentence by the Court of Locri that severely convicted former mayor Domenico Lucano and his associates, as well as in light of the October 2022 appeal verdict by the Court of Reggio Calabria, which slightly downgraded the previous conviction. Under the municipal administration, the small town of Riace, located in a very depressed area of the Calabria region in southern Italy, appeared to have been reborn through a virtuous plan to integrate refugee immigrants into the local community. However, shortly after gaining international attention and recognition, this contemporary "utopia" faced ideological backlash from prominent Italian parliamentarians, morbid media attention and judicial surveillance. After a lengthy investigative action, the Locri Public Prosecutor's Office contested several administrative and criminal charges against former municipal officials, paving the way for the end of the entire Riace Città Futura project. From being a much celebrated model of solidarity, the latter quickly became popular as an infamous example of "solidarity business." Beyond the still ongoing national and international controversies, the case of Riace is useful for reflecting on the position taken by the Italian state on immigration issues, and how it is inscribed in the antagonistic logic underlying the relationship between the judiciary, executive power and political-ideological debate in today's Italy. This essay aims to analyze this dynamic from the case of Riace, using the categories of "Judicialization of Politics" and "Politicization of the Judiciary." Ultimately, it will ask what idea of justice is shaping today's Italian society as a highly polarized "battlefield" between judicial activism, central state interventionism and mainstream political ideologies.

Immigration has become one of the most discussed issues in global political agendas and presents ... more Immigration has become one of the most discussed issues in global political agendas and presents several criticalities. Such criticalities span from immigration management by local, national and transnational institutions, to the enormous flow of people moving across the globe without any certitude about their situation, and the repercussion of this phenomenon on each State’s both internal and foreign policies. All of the above-mentioned crucial situations pose questions which cannot be avoided, yet, don’t have any simple answers. However, for political-philosophical discourses, immigration also exposes in a very critical way what appears to be the inner limits of political analysis, which doesn’t take the complexity of such phenomenon into account. This complexity is not something conjunctural, as various rhetoric of “crisis” would suggest, but it is rather structurally part of the system itself in which it manifests: the contemporary immigration form is namely one of the many face...
