Led by researchers from the University of Twente and Hochschule für Gesundheit, this collaborative effort aims to create public spaces that are not only easy to navigate but also inclusive for people with cognitive disabilities. At the core of their endeavour is the development of a digital map tool, a pivotal step towards achieving a more accessible and participatory urban environment.

Meet the Team:

The Wittekindshof Foundation: The welfare organization that provides advice and support to people with disabilities and their relatives.

Co-researchers: Referred to as ‘the colourful researchers,’ this team is involved in conducting surveys and studying activities in semi-public spaces by and with people living at the Wittekindshof. The specific names or roles of individual co-researchers are not mentioned in the paragraph.

Julia Brüggemann: Social scientist and project coordinator at the Department of Community Health (Hochschule für Gesundheit).

Heike Köckler: Urban planner and professor at the Department of Community Health (Hochschule für Gesundheit).

Johannes Flacke: Associate professor specializing in Spatial Planning and Decision Support Systems at the University of Twente.

Behind-the-Scenes Interview:

Q: Julia, can you introduce yourself and tell me about your role in the Digital mapping with disabled citizens pilot project?

Julia: I’m Julia Brüggemann, a social scientist researching participation formats with disabled people. My role involves relationship management with co-researchers, project coordination, and organization.

Q: Heike, can you share a bit about how the project began? Was it based on previous collaborations or specific aims/inspirations?

Heike: We were fortunate to build on previous collaborations, especially with the Wittekindshof. This groundwork allowed us to initiate the project promptly. The funding provided the opportunity for further development with OGITO software and collaboration with all institutions involved.

Q: Johannes, how do you collaborate with each other and with the citizens involved in the research?

Johannes: Collaboration with co-researchers was on an equal footing. Regular in-person meetings at the foundation’s premises were crucial for effective communication. Synergies with another project made this possible, ensuring the duration and budget were sufficient.

Q: Julia, you co-designed an inclusive digital mapping tool with disabled citizens. Can you explain how the mapping tool works and how you implemented the co-design methodology?

Julia: The workshop process began with small, playful exercises to familiarize participants with the maptable, reducing apprehensions. Co-researchers, with varying digital experience, engaged in exercises using tablets and maptables, making technology use intuitive.

Q: Heike, what do you envision as the project results, and what do they mean to you?

Heike: We’ve learned a lot and gained insights that were new to us. Co-researchers’ strong identification with the project led to experiences of self-efficacy and increased self-confidence. The project outcomes align with our commitment to reducing barriers and ensuring inclusivity.

Q: Julia, as the pilot project is concluding, what will be your next Participatory Research project?

Julia: Heike Köckler and colleagues have secured a three-year project, DiKomAll. This project, involving various fields, aims to develop accessible digital participation formats. We’ll be testing software solutions in real procedural contexts to create applications that are easy to use and comprehend.

Q: Any advice for researchers eager to engage in a participatory science project?

Julia: It’s time-consuming and uncertain, but it’s a journey of continuous development, a right to participation, and a prerequisite for democracy. Be open, authentic, and appreciative. And don’t forget to have fun – it’s a constant surprise where the journey takes you!

Closing Thoughts:

The DiMDiCi project stands as a testament to the power of collaborative research in fostering inclusivity. As the team concludes this phase, their commitment to creating accessible public spaces continues, leaving a lasting impact on the landscape of urban planning and citizen science.

For further information on the DiMDiCi project and its initiatives, you can explore their blog at DiMDiCi Blog and their blog post on the COESO project site at COESO DiMDiCi.

An Interview with Julia Brüggemann, Heike Köckler, and Johannes Flacke By Kaan Yildirim Built into the COESO project are 10 citizen science pilot projects that help us – by sharing with us and each other about their experiences and challenges in collaborative research – to develop an online platform (VERA) where researchers and other members […]

[10,1,4
14,11,59,17,49,16,15,365
385
post-7583","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-behind-the-scenes","category-blogposts","category-inside-coeso","tag-citizenscience","tag-coeso","tag-coesopilots","tag-humanities","tag-participatoryresearch","tag-socialscience","tag-ssh","tag-urbanplanning
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/aafae5cb61e0e72b9d2ee22aa897a7fb70bb99db64e2c59f25ec54203e06fcf4?s=96&d=blank&r=g","1":"","2":"","3":"","4":"","5":"","6":"","7":"","8":"
["GET
