I'm so pleased we'll all be together. ^_^

I try to have a game or contest for my dinner parties, but being in a restaurant and movie theater - something written or spoken would fit best. So I made a Thanksgiving version of Scattegories (PDF).

After we've ordered food, I'll pass out these half-sheets and give them a few minutes to write a word that begins with each letter. Then we take turns announcing our words, scoring 1 point for each original answer. Score 2 points for alliteration, like "Bugs Bunny" for a cartoon character. God forbid you associate killing animals with killing animals. It is a disgusting marketing white-out from a truly disgusting industry.

Do I eat meat? Sometimes. I love sushi. I've had tacos every Tuesday for two years. I've caught and killed and ate my own food. I know where it comes from. I've read the descriptions, I've seen the footage, and I had to make my own decision whether that price is something I am willing to pay. Every time you take a bite of meat, you need to thank that animal for suffering its entire life, being murdered, and processed by labor-abused and underpaid workers, in a filthy and traumatic factory line.

If you don't like seeing a man force a living and struggling turkey head-first into a machine that saws its head off and spurts blood onto the walls ... you should have Tofurkey next week. Canyon walls are over 1000 feet tall, sometimes with as little as 15-30 feet between them. 60% of the hike is spent in the water; usually below your knees, but sometimes so deep you have to swim. Both times I went, I only had to hold my pack above my head twice for sections up to my neck.

There are three ways to hike it: 16 miles Top-Down in one day, Top-Down in two days 8+8 miles sleeping on dry camps, and my favorite Bottom-Up. The park bus takes you to the river where you walk a mile on land. Then you get in the river and hike up as far as you can, saving a third of your energy to turn around and go back to the bus. My personal record is 8 miles (4 up + 4 down).

I've seen trips posted on both the hiking clubs I belong to, but I was always afraid to go. Would I be physically able to do such a hardcore hike? They say it's like walking on wet bowling balls. It wasn't until I saw photos from a previous trip that I saw someone fatter than me on the list. I called her and asked, "Do you think I can do this?"

She told me that anyone could. It's a slot canyon so you can't get lost. If you get tired, just sit down on a rock and the group can pick you up on their way out. She insisted I go. So thanks to her, I had the courage to try -- and HOLY SHIT, IT IS AMAZING. I ended up going twice in a row (8/23 and 9/7), and I can't wait for June 2009 to go again. I will literally go as often as I have people to carpool with. I ended up buying my own wetshoes and poles instead of renting each time. Technically you can go whenever, but it's too cold in the winter, spring melt makes the river deep and fast, and autumn has a high risk of flash flooding.

True, it is tough. Walking up against the flow of water is twice as hard as coming down. But if you go at your own pace and laugh off the scrapes, it's totally doable and totally worth it. I tend to hike on the slow side of moderate. On the second trip, the leader wanted to blaze ahead so he split the group in half and asked me to lead a slower version for people closer to my pace group. They made it 14 miles, we made it 7. For me, seven miles is something to PARTY FOR OMG, but I was limping home man. ;-)

It was 90 degrees out, and the river was 60 ... so it was laughably cold when you slipped and dunk in. I fell a couple times but nothing more than a bruised asshole and wet t-shirt. I usually don't drink much on hikes, but I brought 2 liters and was still thirsty on the way out. We brought lunches and ate them at the turnaround point.

There's a fork a couple hours in: The left continues the Narrows where the thinnest section of canyon is, and the right leads off to Orderville canyon where the climbing is. I've done both now, and I can say: Go right! Orderville also had deeper waters, so climbing is less scary when you know you have a bit of water to soften your fall.

I met Malia on this hike and we became fast friends. She and I paired off for Orderville and cheered each other on so well, we each set new personal records for climbing. I usually won't do more than a Class 2 or 2.5, like 3-8 feet -- but when we had to get up a 12 foot waterfall, she and I worked together and got up that CLASS 3 MUTHA! I wish I could find a photo of it, your brain would melt if you saw me Humpty-Dumptying over that sucker. ^_^

In conclusion: SI SE PUEDE. Malia is awesome. Utah makes up for Mormans with amazing outdoor pwnage. Come visit me and I'll get a group together to go this summer! Many times!

Pictures never do scale justice. The mountains are crazy tall, and you're down in a 1000 foot canyon for miles. The most upsetting bit was the new feel of hate I had for a large chunk of this country. Hating America for the first time literally broke my heart and I stayed in bed for days. I love this country too much to see it hijacked by religious fanatics.

Sometimes in this election, I feel like there's hope again. Like our country can rise up to be its best. Like those scars will be soothed. If Obama dies in office, I will be inconsolable. Possibly worse than what people report for the day JFK died. Biden seems qualified, but holy shit: Inconsolable.

Yet on other days, disgust bubbles up and I expect McCain to win -- despite the lead, despite the obvious economic disadvantages, despite the ideological stubbornness for unlimited war. I am not a person accustom to hatred, so it upsets me when I feel like I cannot coexist with a large chunk of my country. I don't think I'll be sad if McCain wins, I worry that I'll be as bitter and pessimistic as they are.

Do you watch campaign videos and compare the crowds? Why is there so much boo'ing at McCain rallies? Their campaign is based on hate. I feel proud that ours is based on hope, and I'm clinging to the possibility that good will win.

As I've said before, I am good at seeing both sides and finding compromise. So I have to ask myself, how is my divisiveness different from the KKK supporter who will be depressed if a Muslim socialist like Obama wins? Won't they be just as upset? People pick a candidate based on their values, and I can't blame them for being brainwashed by a monotheistic, misogynistic, heteronormative culture. We mustn't paint the opponent as a villain.

Unless he really is one, and then by all means -- macro that fucker up -- because come November 4th, I think we have a chance. I don't have TV, so I hope you seeders will get crackin' asap. ^_^

Seriously you guys, This American Life on NPR/PRI is possibly one of the best podcasts in the world. They cover a variety of subjects, but my recent favorites have been in financial news -- taking big money ideas and putting them in plain English with compelling stories. I don't know much about economics; I know enough to keep my head above water though I still get nervous a few days a week. The other day they explored how the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission hasn't done much of anything while in office, and his temporary regulation of naked short-selling was not going to help fix Wall Street (listen here). Outside of my world, I must admit, but still nice to hear it in a way that makes sense.

Another fascinating episode was 355: The Giant Pool of Money -- which explores the foreclosure and subprime lending crisis in America. That one changed my life, man. NINA (no-income no-asset) loans, ARM (adjustable-rate mortgages), credit default swaps, and the predators who gambled and lost; I feel like I understand what went wrong where.

McCain, self-proclaimed "fundamentally a deregulator" has backtracked a little lately because the same old "Less Government!" rhetoric is not going to fix this economy. I think we need more regulations to stabilize the system, and increase transparency and accountability. We have to protect the majority of average Americans from douchebags that exploit the system, pay themselves from taxpayers' losses, and crash markets while they retire on bonus packages from failing companies.

"I'm always for less regulation." - John McCain

"This is what happens when you confuse the free market with a free license to let special interests to take whatever they can get, however they can get it." - Barack Obama
We don't need a ploy like long-range planning commissions, we need solutions now. I don't think a cabinet full of lobbyists is going to help families who are losing their homes and jobs. I'm from Flint-Fucking-Michigan, I have first-hand experience with being laid off, foreclosed, evicted, homeless, unemployed, and uninsured.

Now in Nevada, I'm a single female and small business owner, and I vote with two things: My vagina and my wallet. For those of us that make less than $250,000 a year, Obama's tax plan is superior. We are living in the 21st century and McCain admits he doesn't use computers and doesn't know how to "use the email". Stuff that matters to bloggers and pirates like me? I need someone that wouldn't ask where's the ANY key!

Me and my vagina are terrified of the very real possibility that Palin will be president someday. She is a liar and a religious whackjob. Last night in Ohio she said her teleprompter malfunctioned at the convention, so she improvised. There's continuous footage of the convention that includes the teleprompter in frame and it does not malfunction. Her character in this election is a myth. What's all this about her trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired? Or her role in earmarks like early supporting the Bridge to Nowhere and later denying it? She uses her special-needs child as a prop to be an advocate for those kids, but while in office, she cut the state funding for Special Olympics by half by vetoing $275,000.

Most alarmingly, she's opposed to all abortion period; regardless of risk to the mother, rape, or incest. Alaska is the #1 state in the country for rape and incest; talk about being out-of-touch. Her own daughter didn't follow the whole abstinence-only bullshit and is having a shotgun wedding. Palin herself was pregnant when she got married. If McCain wins, I demand every technological intervention available to keep that asshole alive, because Palin in office is going to be worse than the worst Disney movie ever.

McComb County in battleground-state Michigan and full of African-Americans, has a civil rights problem brewing. The GOP has a list of home foreclosures and may challenge votes due to invalid addresses. If you have been foreclosed, they may mail a verification card to your address, it will bounce, and they'll distribute those names to the polls and attempt to block those voters.

I don't know if that's legal or ethical, but it sure is one more example of how the Republican party does not want Americans in crisis to be a part of the equation. How you can say you'll offer solutions to these people, and then discreetly target and block them from having a voice? It really says something, man.

Believe it or not, I consider myself something of an independent-left. I have Republican friends and family, and I try to find news sources that aren't as blatantly biased as Fox and MSNBC. I will listen to both sides. I think fiscal conservatives and libertarians have the balls it takes to keep this country from the inevitable bankruptcy we're heading toward. Thus I seek out actual plans and stances. I demand change.

I can now say with complete certainty, that Obama is the better candidate for me. Nevada has been red since 1964 with the exception of Clinton, and our five electoral votes are now considered up for grabs. I think I'll ask the Democrats if they need some help getting young, low- to middle- income, or people of color to the polls, because this country needs defending.

NPR Election Map 2008

See anywhere you can help?

Brought to you in part by the Multi-Ethnic Coalition of Pro-Choice Eco-Friendly Bi-Curious BloggersTM.

1: If I had my way, every day would be Dean Winchester Day. ;-)
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:coell:268553
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
{"@attributes":
lolz
<lj-embed id="52" />

Thanks for the link, bzzinglikeneon.
