I started working on this in hopes of handing some printed material out to the paranoid (non-technical) persons who pester me with questions when I'm surveying. Bonus points if OSM gets more users and/or contributors through it.
Except where noted, all designs by contrapunctus and elevated to the public domain using the CC0 declaration - see COPYING.txt.
You can adapt them to your needs by editing them in Inkscape. Or get in touch with me over XMPP and I'll do it for you - https://xmpp.link/#[email protected]

OSM handouts
TODO One-sided A4 sheets
/contrapunctus/osm-awareness/src/branch/production/handouts/1-sided
These are designed for tables at conferences, and meant for somewhat technical users -
- "Introduction to OpenStreetMap", which introduces people to the project
- "Connect with the local OSM community"
- Organic Maps
- OsmAnd
- "Map the world" (design by NLBRT, text and screenshots by contrapunctus), which introduces simple editors meant for new contributors. This turned out to be less useful in practice.
(While we call these "one-sided", we recommend printing them as two-sided A4 sheets - "Introduction to OpenStreetMap" and "connect with the local OSM community" on one sheet, Organic Maps and OsmAnd on another.)
If you need to modify them, you'll need the Red Hat Font, which you can obtain here.
Two-sided A5 sheets
handouts/2-sided/en-a5.pdf is the basic version for handing out to bystanders. It is meant to be printed on a single two-sided A5 sheet.
It has space for contributors to write their name and contact details, should they choose to do so.
Folded A4 sheets
handouts/3-sided/en-a5 is a version of the previous which includes screenshots of Organic Maps. It takes up 3 A5 pages, so you can print it on one A4 sheet folded in half.
handouts/4-sided/en-a5 is a version of the previous which includes screenshots of Organic Maps, iD, and StreetComplete. It takes up 4 A5 pages, so you can print it on one A4 sheet folded in half.
OSM posters
Local community posters
The posters for local community events are designed to be printed on A4 size sheets or larger. There's an English and a Hindi version, both designed to be accessible to nontechnical viewers.
Showcase posters
The showcase posters are single-page documents intended as posters or placards/signs of size A3, A2, or larger.
You should adapt them to depict areas of your city that are mapped well enough to be showcased, but they could also be used in a finer-grained way to showcase individual shops/amenities. (Of course, that requires more funds and more effort.)
Some alternative titles (adapt as necessary) -
- Check out … on OpenStreetMap!
- Discover … on OpenStreetMap!
- Find us on OpenStreetMap!
- We are on OpenStreetMap!
Compared to handouts, such posters/signs have the following benefits -
- Greater reach. A single poster/sign is seen by people as long as it's up. In contrast, a handout usually only reaches one person before it's discarded.
- Repeated exposure. If many such posters are put up in different areas of the same city, people's awareness of OSM can be reinforced by repetition, and they may be more inclined to check out the apps and/or try editing.
- They don't just introduce OSM, OMaps, and OsmAnd - they also showcase the quality and coverage of OSM. If such posters/signs are ubiquitous, people know that OSM has good coverage in their region.
OSM business cards
![]()
The cards directory contains templates for portrait and landscape US-size (2"×3.5") business cards. These are multi-page SVGs, allowing you to add a QR code at the back.
If you want a QR code on the back of your card -
- Add your details to the given vCard (.vcf) file in a text editor.
-
Use an application like Binary Eye to generate a QR code for the vCard. Save it, preferably as SVG.
- Alternatively, upload the vCard to a stable URL and generate a QR code for the download link, so those using the QR code have the always-up-to-date online version, even if the information on your physical card becomes stale. The downside is that changing the URL will break the link on your cards if you don't set up a redirect, and recipients need an Internet connection to add your contact.
- Use Inkscape to embed the saved QR code on the rear of the card.
OSM T-shirts
Designed by NLBRT and contrapunctus.
dgray/in-en was what we initially printed for IndiaFOSS 2024. It just said "OpenStreetMap India" on the front and "OpenStreetMap India"/"www.openstreetmap.in" on the back. But we found that people at the conference often thought that OSM India was some company we were part of.
dgray/en is a version with the global OSM logo, and tries to improve upon the situation by adding the subtitle "It's free. It's fun. You can help!"
Alternative text ideas include
- "OpenStreetMap" - "The map for everyone, for good."
- "OpenStreetMap Volunteer"
Also available in olive - olive/in-en and olive/en
OSM badges
We've designed badges as a reward system for attending mapping parties.
When you attend 2 mapping parties, you receive an iron badge.
When you attend 5, you exchange your iron badge for a bronze badge.
When you attend 9, you exchange your bronze badge for a silver badge.
When you attend 14, you exchange your silver badge for a gold badge.
When you attend 20, you exchange your gold badge for a platinum badge.
When you attend 22 (20 + 2), you receive a bronze badge while retaining your platinum badge. Now you can wear both at once, and continue the upgrade cycle with the bronze.
This will hopefully add an extra element of fun, regardless of whether one is a one-off participant, a casual participant, or a serious participant.
NB - pin badges poke holes in fabric. Can there be a less destructive alternative, like snap fasteners or magnetic fasteners? We can also provide holes so they may be worn as dog tags. One could also print these badges as stickers, and give them out at mapping parties, similar to conference name tags…
Feedback and contributions welcome!
These could definitely be improved - please make issues or PRs.
For those looking to make a PR -
- Please ensure that you are okay with elevating your work to the public domain. Mixing multiple licenses in a single repository is not fun.
- Please use Inkscape or other libre editors. Accessibility and convenience of those using libre editors is a major priority. Figma, for instance - apart from being proprietary software - seems to wreak havoc in the exported SVGs and makes life difficult for those editing in libre tools.
- In each commit, please ensure that you have updated the accompanying (300 DPI) PNG to reflect the changes you have made.
- Please follow these Git commit message guidelines
