Geography must be conceived in relation to man. It is not merely a description of the Earth, rath... more Geography must be conceived in relation to man. It is not merely a description of the Earth, rather it accounts for the history of man's relationship with it, of man's movements on its surface, and his transformative impact on the world. From this perspective, Friedrich Ratzel was extraordinarily innovative respect to other nineteenth century scholars. That said, however, his revolutionary approach actually relied on an ancient foundation. To understand the basis of Ratzel's anthropogeographical project it is vital to return to a Greek concept that, over the centuries, has been variously resemantized: the concept of the oecumene. In his understanding of the oecumene, the entire breadth of humanity is conceived in historical and geographical relation to the world around it. Ratzel's anthropogeography aspires to an allencompassing understanding of man. In fact, it allows us to reconstruct the coordinates of time and space through which man has developed as a being capable of culture. The Earth, according to Ratzel, transcends its eminently geophysical connotations and becomes more similar to the ancient oecumene. It is, once more, the abode of man; it is that which he knows and recognizes, that to which he gives a name.

Alongside his work as a professor of Greek Language and Literature at the University of Basel, Fr... more Alongside his work as a professor of Greek Language and Literature at the University of Basel, Friedrich Nietzsche reflected on the value of classical studies in contemporary nineteenth-century society, starting with a selfanalysis of his own classical training and position as a philologist and teacher. Contrary to his well-known aversion to classical philology, a science conceived as being an end in itself, aimed at mere erudite complacency, I highlight Nietzsche's defence of the system of Classical studies, and of the education of young people through the works of the ancient Greek and Roman period. Such an apology 'redeems' , in a sense, the discipline, and justifies its role and continued relevance in our present-day society.

Nietzsche und die Normativität des Rhythmus 1 Die soziale und politische Rolle der Dichtung Betra... more Nietzsche und die Normativität des Rhythmus 1 Die soziale und politische Rolle der Dichtung Betrachten wir den heutigen Stand der Forschung, so können wir erkennen, dass die Frage der Rhythmik sich zu einem zentralen Thema in den Studien zu Nietzsche entwickelt hat. Dies gilt nicht nur, wenn man das Verhältnis Nietzsches zur griechischen Welt betrachtet, sondern auch dort, wo man sich für die Auswirkungen dieser Frage auf das späte Werk Nietzsches interessiert. Seit einigen Jahren hat die Neuentdeckung von Nietzsches Vorlesungen über die griechische Rhythmik eine lebendige Debatte hervorgerufen.1 Das Interesse Nietzsches für den Rhythmus ist eine Konstante in der Reflexion des Philosophen, die Spuren in seiner ganzen Produktion hinterlassen hat: von der Basler Zeit (1870-71) bis zu den letzten Briefen (1888). Um die nachhaltige Wirkung der Frage des Rhythmus in der Philosophie Friedrich Nietzsches zu verstehen, muss man sich der Entwicklung seiner Reflexionen bewusst sein. Die Frage nach dem Rhythmus kann in Nietzsches Werk infolgedessen auf der philologischen Ebene angegangen werden, spiegelt sich aber unzweifelhaft auch in anthropologischen, musikalischen, physiologischen und sogar in ethischen Fragestellungen wieder. Der Ursprung der Reflexionen Nietzsches über den Rhythmus ist streng mit der Reflexion über die Geburt und die Natur des Kunstwerks der Sprache bei den Griechen verbunden. In den der Geschichte der griechischen Literatur gewidmeten Vorlesungen (GGL, KGW II/5) beobachtet Nietzsche, dass die ganze antike Literaturgeschichte zeigt, wie bewusst sich die Griechen waren, dass sie es bei rhythmischen Phänomenen mit etwas Gefährlichem und Machtvollem zu tun hatten. But how crucial is the figure of Nietzsche to his intellectual horizon? To determine this, I follow E. H. Gombrich's example. An essential part of Gombrich's work on the intellectual biography of the founder of the Library for Cultural Science (Gombrich 1970) was to immerse himself in Warburg's "external memory": in his so-called 'slip box' or 'card index' [Zettelkasten]. If one looks into the many sections and individual cards of this card boxwhich opens up a true labyrinth of bibliographical references, scattered notes and excerpts that should serve as a tool for orientation in the encyclopedic knowledge of his time and are the systematic basis for his famous libraryonly one name from the philosophical tradition really comes to the fore out of the tangle of references: the name Friedrich Nietzsche. Einleitung Bei der Gestaltung des Programms der 2018er Jahrestagung der Nietzsche-Gesellschaft, die dem Thema "Geschichte und Gedächtnis" gewidmet war, durfte der Name Aby Warburg, einer der exemplarischen Persönlichkeiten der Gedächtnisdebatte des 20. Jahrhunderts, nicht fehlen. Daraus entsprang die Idee, ein im Jahr davor (2017) im Archiv des Warburg-Instituts in London begonnenes Projekt wiederaufzunehmen und zu entwickeln. Der Hamburger Kunsthistoriker gehört in der Tat zu den letzten Intellektuellen, die den humanistischen Anspruch eines zugleich wissenschaftlichen und enzyklopädischen Zugangs zur Kultur verfolgten. Der der Kulturwissenschaft gewidmete Tempel, die Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek (heute in London), wurde nach einer bibliothekarischen Ordnung eingerichtet, in der sich der Geist des Humanisten Warburg unmittelbar widerspiegelt. Auf dem Architrav der Eingangstür steht die Schutzgottheit dieses Tempels: Mnemosyne, die Mutter der Musen, die Inspirationsquelle der Dichter, die Göttin der Erinnerung. ‚Mnemosyne' ist auch der Name von Warburgs letztem Großprojekt, einem unvollendet gebliebenen Bildatlas, Ergebnis der wissenschaftlichen Studien der Bibliothek, in welchem die Prozesse der Bildung und Entwicklung des kulturellen Gedächtnisses der Menschheit
