These censuses indicate a changing hierarchy of places that is typical of a settler society and of its representations of space and society. Over one century, the official census places and the pattern of population distribution have shifted from a selective colonial view of human settlements to an inclusive postcolonial society view closer to the distribution of the whole population.

(China, India, Brazil, Europe, the Former Soviet Union (FSU), the United States and South Africa)
are made comparable through the building of spatio-temporal standardised statistical databases. We
rst explain the concept of a generic evolutionary urban unit (\city") and its necessary adaptations
to the information provided by each national statistical system. Second, the hierarchical structure
and the urban growth process are compared at macro-scale for the seven countries with reference
to Zipf's and Gibrat's model: in agreement with an evolutionary theory of urban systems, large
similarities shape the hierarchical structure and growth processes in BRICS countries as well as in
Europe and United States, despite their positions at dierent stages in the urban transition that
explain some structural peculiarities. Third, the individual trajectories of some 10,000 cities are
mapped at micro-scale following a cluster analysis of their evolution over the last fty years. A few
common principles extracted from the evolutionary theory of urban systems can explain the diversity
of these trajectories, including a specic pattern in their geographical repartition in the Chinese case.
We conclude that the observations at macro-level when summarized as stylised facts can help in
designing simulation models of urban systems whereas the urban trajectories identied at micro-level
are consistent enough for constituting the basis of plausible future population projections.

The fragmented urban morphology inherited from apartheid composes today with the rapid development of malls. Designed to be cities within the city, or appeal to the exotic imaginary, some offer a new vitality to once decayed environment, and even a haven for desegregation. Other further urban fragmentation while participating in the globalisation of South African cities. Their use of architectural and toponymic references to international and/or vernacular styles can be analysed within the dialectic framework of africanisation/globalisation. We propose to explore these issues through the case study of three Cape Town malls: the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, Century City and Vangate Mall.

DYSTURB has a threefold purpose: it is a tool enabling the study of spatial and territorial archaeology, of historical demography, and of urban dynamics. It is backed up by a series of maps and commentaries that have been developed for the CD-Rom.
The ArcGis datas and Excel data files of the database Dysturb are available on the CD.
