Applied R&D strategy
CMB.TECH's research and development activities focus on low-carbon solutions such as ammonia, hydrogen and batteries. The R&D strategy focuses on the core activity of shipping, but also takes into account the entire value chain required to deploy these solutions on a large scale – from production to end use. In concrete terms, this means that CMB.TECH is building its own infrastructure and is developing various port applications in collaboration with partners. In this way, R&D is used as a strategic lever to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon fleet.

Integration in our fleet
The best low-carbon solution is considered for each vessel type. For larger vessels, we are focusing on ammonia. The first ammonia-powered vessels will be added in our fleet from 2026. For smaller vessels we focus on hydrogen and batteries. We already have several vessel types in our fleet running on our in-house hydrogen technology. The main advantage of the dual fuel technology is that it significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions today, while at the same time still provides a robust and reliable solution.

Field trials
CMB.TECH develops, tests and markets low-carbon solutions for heavy-duty assets in and around port areas. We target marine power systems, port equipment, power generation and transport applications. Together with our partners, we are running field trials, and we are further developing hydrogen dual fuel engines.
Dual fuel hydrogen genset
Using a Volvo Penta Stage V D8 industrial engine, and applying CMB.TECH's hydrogen dual fuel technology & control system, genset manufacturers can integrate the hydrogen kit as a plug & play system into their generator sets.

Dual fuel hydrogen straddle carrier
This field trial with Volvo Penta significantly reduces carbon emissions while still ensuring the efficient and effective handling of cargo.

Dual fuel hydrogen CTV
The Hydrocat consists of two MAN D2862 LE448 engines with a power output of 749 kW per engine. The base MAN engine is manufactured by MAN Engines for dual fuel use and retrofitted by CMB.TECH with a hydrogen injection system.

Dual fuel hydrogen freight locomotive
In port areas and remote regions where full electrification of the railways is challenging, hydrogen-powered locomotives can offer a viable solution. Our technology makes it possible to convert existing locomotives to dual fuel hydrogen with minimal technical modifications, ensuring both robustness and simplicity.
To demonstrate the potential of sustainable long-distance transport, we have purchased a diesel locomotive that we are equipping with the V12 BeHydro medium-speed engine, suitable for dual fuel use with green hydrogen. The compressed hydrogen storage system is installed in a standardised 20-foot container and feeds the locomotive via a fuel tank.

Dual fuel hydrogen truck
Our dual fuel hydrogen trucks are engineered to provide seamless operation. The truck switches to diesel mode when hydrogen is temporarily unavailable, ensuring continuous operation and enabling the energy transition to be implemented in a reliable manner.
