Patents\u00a0and other forms of intellectual property (IP)\u00a0are business tools that provide rights to inventors, creators, authors,\u00a0and\u00a0businesses\u00a0that employ them. However,\u00a0what they protect and how to\u00a0use\u00a0them are often poorly understood.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This\u00a0course\u00a0will outline the\u00a0various types\u00a0of IP\u00a0(such as\u00a0patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights), what\u00a0they protect, and what they do not protect.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The course\u00a0will\u00a0then\u00a0go into detail on what is\u00a0needed\u00a0to\u00a0understand the patenting process, including the\u00a0different types\u00a0of patent applications, what must be\u00a0disclosed\u00a0for each, and what is unnecessary or even detrimental to getting and enforcing a patent.\u00a0The contrast between the requirements of a scientific paper and\u00a0a patent\u00a0disclosure will be clarified.\u00a0Myths and\u00a0misconceptions about patents and the patent process\u00a0will also be addressed and debunked.\u00a0Exploration of options for\u00a0prior art search tools\u00a0will be presented,\u00a0along with\u00a0when a search\u00a0is\u00a0fruitful and when it is\u00a0counter-productive.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the focus will mostly\u00a0be\u00a0on\u00a0US patents and procedures,\u00a0filing for\u00a0patents in other countries under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and the Paris Convention will also be\u00a0discussed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from patents, some detail on the requirements to secure trade secrets within a company will also be presented, and a comparison\u00a0of strengths and weaknesses for patents vs. trade secrets will be presented.\u00a0Comparisons between patent and copyright protections will also be discussed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                              Instructor\u202fBiography:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

                              Franklin Schellenberg has a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University, working in nonlinear optics and novel polymeric materials.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                              He spent a decade in IBM Research and HP Labs investigating nonlinear optics, novel optical storage technologies, and optical lithography. He joined a start-up (OPC Technology, Inc.) developing optical resolution enhancement software for semiconductor lithography, which was acquired by Mentor Graphics in 1998. He passed the patent bar in 2000 and has been working on strategic patenting for large companies and start-ups since then. He joined the law firm Haynes Beffel & Wolfeld in 2022.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
