The industrial and railway protagonism in promoting economic, social and regional development in ... more The industrial and railway protagonism in promoting economic, social and regional development in recent centuries is not reflected in international preservation policies. The industrial universe, and specifically the railway sector, has characteristics that demand a different interpretation from other cultural assets and little progress has been made in this regard over the 50 years of the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. In this way, the article contextualizes the creation of international heritage and the presence of industrial goods as World Heritage to justify the need for a new look at these goods. Within this problem, specificities of the railway heritage are presented and the proposition of eight aspects that provide the reading and interpretation of its main characteristics, responsible for the attribution of its heritage values and, consequently, its cultural significance.

A autenticidade, a integridade e a significância cultural sao nocoes que guiam a conservacao de bens culturais em todo o mundo, apesar de sua dificil compreensao e operacionalizacao. Dessa forma, procura-se propor atraves de uma intepretacao contmporânea do patrimonio uma leitura indissociavel dessas tres nocoes, com base na premissa de Lira (2020) que estao diretamente relacionados com os atributos do bem cultural. Parte-se da hipotese que os atributos sao a essencia da atribuicao dos valores que conferem significado aos bens culturais. This article is the result of an investigation under development and part of the assumption point... more This article is the result of an investigation under development and part of the assumption pointed out by Coulls (1999) that the broad railway universe, has particular characteristics that differ from the “common” cultural heritage and therefore must have specific criteria. Authenticity, integrity and cultural significance are notions that guide the conservation of cultural assets worldwide, despite their difficult understanding and operationalization. Thus, it seeks to propose, through a contemporary interpretation of heritage, an inseparable reading of these three notions, based on the premise of Lira (2020) that are directly related to the attributes of the cultural good. It is assumed that attributes are the essence of the attribution of values that give meaning to cultural goods. In order to assist the understanding of railway attributes, the article has a theoretical-methodological focus and through a reflection of the literature, proposes specific aspects that will cooperate in the identification of railway attributes and, thus, contribute with a tool that helps in reading the particular characteristics of the railways and consequently in the patrimonialization of these cultural goods.

Em 2007 foi instituída a lei 11.483 que respon-sabiliza o Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional, de promover e proteger os bens oriundos da RFFSA, sendo elaborado o Inventário do Patrimônio Ferroviário, com a nalidade de identi car seus bens. O artigo objetiva investigar a noção de autenticidade no âmbito do patri-mônio ferroviário através das premissas e dimensões de autenticidade propostas por Lira, bem como sua avaliação através da identi cação de atributos, tendo como estudo de caso o Conjunto Ferroviário de Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brasil, contribuindo assim com a gestão e conservação do patrimônio ferroviário. The wide railway universe, with its particular and peculiar characteristics, requires the impleme... more The wide railway universe, with its particular and peculiar characteristics, requires the implementation of criteria to improve the identification and conservation of cultural goods. Recently concepts of authenticity, integrity and cultural significance have been identified as fundamental in the selection of the cultural heritage of humanity. Although we find these concepts being analyzed in theory as independents, through a theoretical-methodological reflection, this PhD research argues that, in practice, they are interconnected, and therefore should be approached together. Following the contemporary theory of conservation, my doctoral research aims at contributing to the conservation of railways’ heritage using this new approach, by proposing new indicators as assessment tools so that conservation institutions will be able to identify railway goods as cultural heritage. The research uses the Railway Complex of Barreiro, in Portugal, as a case study.

In this paper I discuss the concepts of authenticity and integrity within the framework of herita... more In this paper I discuss the concepts of authenticity and integrity within the framework of heritage conservation and suggest new avenues for their interpretation. The first theorists of conservation date to the 19th century in the context of boundless faith in science and awakening of nationalisms, when starts to use national monuments as symbol of identity. Truth and identity were, thus, the guidelines for leading theorists’ arguments, even if they had opposite positions, such as John Ruskin and Violet-le-Duc. Building on the maturation of the concept of heritage in the 19th and particularly in the 20th century, the idea of truth emerges in the Venice Charter (1964), under the complex label of the concept of authenticity, as a criterion of patrimonialization. Thirty years later, the Nara Charter (1994) changed the perspective of the concept of authenticity, by expanding the scope of cultural heritage concerns and interests and accommodating its diversity according to different traditions, values and sources. Despite these efforts to make the concept of authenticity and integrity more inclusive and efficient, according to Stovel (2005, 2007) and Jokilehto (2006), their current understanding within heritage conservation is still too subjective and difficult to use. On the other hand, alternative perspectives have been put forward, such as the Salvador Muñoz Viñas (2005), who argues that the focus should be on persons first, since as they give value to monuments, proposing a shift from the notion of truth to the one of transmission of meaning. One of the aims of my PhD research project is to contribute to mature and stabilize the concepts of authenticity and integrity by widening the range of attributes that are used to assess them. In this paper, I present and discuss a contemporary perspective of the concepts of authenticity and integrity for the conservation of cultural heritage.

O património ferroviário está associado ao património industrial, sua riqueza está em sua diversi... more O património ferroviário está associado ao património industrial, sua riqueza está em sua diversidade formal, de uso e de escala. Além dos bens materiais, contempla saberes e costumes. É justamente devido ao lato universo dos bens industriais e ferroviários, com suas características particulares e peculiares, que se faz necessário o estabelecimento de critérios basilares (Coulls, 1999) que identifiquem e justifiquem a patrimonialização dos bens ferroviários. Este estudo, propõe de acordo com Lira, (2020) que a autenticidade, integridade e a significância cultural sejam interpretadas de maneira indissociável. Com base nessa interpretação, parte-se da hipótese que os atributos, ou seja, as principais características materiais e imateriais que cada bem cultural possui, são a essência da atribuição dos valores que conferem significado aos bens culturais e assim justifica sua classificação como património cultural. A especificidade do património ferroviário é justificada ao dialogar com autores como Casanelles Rahóla, Soto e Ganges, Kühl, Rufinoni e Freire para expor uma compreensão atual do património cultural e principalmente do património ferroviário que vai além das suas estruturas materiais e isoladas. Com finalidade de tornar claro algumas características ferroviárias, após reflexão entre estes autores e instituições, é proposto um conjunto de aspetos que contribuam na identificação dos atributos e ser uma ferramenta metodológica que possam nortear o processo de reconhecimento, valoração e patrimonialização dos bens culturais ferroviários.
