Dr Yong Ming Kow is a social computing scientist in the field of human-computer interaction. His research focuses on studies of community cultures around media design and development as informed by ethnography. In particular, he is investigating collaborative work and practices within research areas including computer games, peer collaboration, digital youth, and novel uses of media artifacts. Yong Ming has also published extensively in other conferences, journals, and book chapters on digital media and learning, computer games, and on China. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong.

As research in human-computer interaction becomes globalized, an emerging question is whether not... more As research in human-computer interaction becomes globalized, an emerging question is whether notions of participation used to describe online communities in the literature can be applied to other cultures. I compare the culture of modders—end users who develop software extensions to commercial products—in the U.S. and China. I studied modders who create mods for the popular online multiplayer game World of Warcraft. I found that core teams are a common cooperative practice for producing mods in China, which differs from the participatory modding practices prevalent in the U.S. Grassroots culture is how a social group would develop social relations and cooperate to achieve a shared goal when this group is operating without the influence of external forces such as capitalistic interest. Our prototype app, Pocket Penjing, built using Unity3D, takes its name from the Chinese "Pen... more Our prototype app, Pocket Penjing, built using Unity3D, takes its name from the Chinese "Penjing." These tray plantings of miniature trees pre-date bonsai, often including miniature benches or figures to allude to people's relationship to the tree. App users choose a species, then create and name their tree. Swiping rotates a 3D globe showing flagged locations. Each flag represents a live online air quality monitoring station data stream that the app can scrape. Data is pulled in from the selected station and the AR window loads. The AR tree grows in real-time 3D. Its L-Systems form is determined by the selected live air quality data. We used this prototype as the basis of a two-part formative participatory design workshop with 63 participants.

The relationship between poor air quality and ill health concerns citi- zens and health practitioners the world over. An increasing number of Air Quality Data (AQD) apps quantify air quality numerically, yet many of us remain con- fused about the ‘real’ extent of air pollution, in part because we tend to ignore imperceptible pollution despite data alerting us to its danger. Further, even if we understand it, data about air quality alone does not sustain citizens’ interest in environmental issues. We report on our use of Augmented Reality (AR) to create an app that visualizes AQD as an affective miniature tree whose health corre- sponds to live AQD. We argue that AR is polyaesthetic, demanding a more em- bodied engagement from its users which deepens their understanding of AQD. Resisting the Censorship Infrastructure in China

China's censorship infrastructure is widely recognized as sophisticated, strict, and comprehensiv... more China's censorship infrastructure is widely recognized as sophisticated, strict, and comprehensive. We conducted a qualitative study to understand Chinese citizens' practices to navigate the censored Chinese Internet. We found that participants' practices were closely related to their understanding of and resistance to the censorship infrastructure. Participants switched between public and private channels based on the information they desired to seek. They communicated in ways that were considered less vulnerable to censorship examination. They broadened their information search to mitigate the impact of censored content consumption. Through these practices, participants reportedly coped with the censorship infrastructure in an effective manner. We discuss how this case of resistance to censorship in China may further our understanding of such infrastructure.

Cryptocurrencies — being digitally transmitted and embodied within peer-to-peer infrastructures —... more Cryptocurrencies — being digitally transmitted and embodied within peer-to-peer infrastructures — may mediate new forms of peer-driven interactions and collaborations among Internet users. In this paper, I performed in-depth interviews of cryptocurrencies’ emerging uses with 16 participants between September 2013 and March 2015. My analysis of how these users have used cryptocurrencies revealed a new feature, large-crowd, cost-effective transactions (trades involving massive numbers of participants), that can drive trades involving massive numbers of participants. Cryptocurrencies, having a peer-driven logical infrastructure, are already known to offer a freer alternate medium for users to customize or automate monetary processes. But the newly identified feature makes it possible for peer producers to organize work payment options involving a large crowd of contributors.
