Becca S. Tarnas is a doctoral candidate in the Philosophy and Religion department at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her dissertation research is focused on the theoretical implications of the synchronicity between the Red Books of C.G. Jung and J.R.R. Tolkien. Becca received her M.A. from CIIS, and her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College. Her research interests include ecology, imagination, philosophy, and depth psychology, and she is also co-editor of Archai: The Journal of Archetypal Cosmology.

Substantial evidence has been put forward for the astrological perspective, demonstrating the mul... more Substantial evidence has been put forward for the astrological perspective, demonstrating the multifaceted ways in which astrology works. Yet below the surface of this evidence lies another question: why does astrology work? What does the recognition of this highly precise, yet poetically subtle, correspondence between planetary movements and events on Earth indicate about the nature of the cosmos? The evidence for planetary correlations with human affairs can, in many ways, address the alienation from the rest of the cosmos felt by the human being in late modernity. Through the recognition of such symbolic patterns, we can feel the deep interconnection that has always been present between us and our world. We are our world. The cosmic web has not been cut, although part of our human journey has been to feel as though the threads of our existence have been severed.

The imagination plays many roles in our practice of ecology upon this exquisite, blue and green c... more The imagination plays many roles in our practice of ecology upon this exquisite, blue and green celestial gem named Earth. Our planet continues to suffer the ravaging destruction of industrialization and the consumptive growth of human greed, but humanity is at least beginning to re-imagine its purpose in relationship to the Earth. The imagination is a multifaceted gift to ecology, one that can connect us to our past and future, that can cultivate spiritual strength and moral empathy within us, that can allow us to see our human role in an enchanted cosmos. The imagination is the eye of the soul, a bridge between the rational mind and the physical world, the opening of a realm in which the true beauty of the soul of the world, what the ancients called the anima mundi, can be revealed. Aspects of what could be called an “imaginal ecology” can be glimpsed throughout the work of many thinkers, including not only Macy and Hillman, but also Thomas Berry, Brian Swimme, Mary Evelyn Tucker, John Seed, Theodore Roszak, Christopher Bache, David Abram, and numerous other contemporary thinkers. Imaginal ecology flourishes in the articulations of the realm of Faërie penned by J. R. R. Tolkien, and other artists and storytellers whose work reveals the enchantment of the realm in which we live.

Science and religion have been in an antagonistic battle of refutation since the dawn of modernit... more Science and religion have been in an antagonistic battle of refutation since the dawn of modernity. Few have sought to reconcile them, and many would call it futile even to try. However, the Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin brought a revolutionary way of thinking to the two world views that provides a vision of their harmonious relationship. Writing in the first half of the twentieth century, Teilhard, who had a scientific background in paleontology, sought to express the evolution of the cosmos as a divine teleological journey culminating, thus far, in the human being. Teilhard believed the unique self-reflective quality of the human, and the human capacity for Christian love, would ultimately lead to a divine convergence of the human community upon what he called the Omega Point, or the Cosmic Christ.
