Crossbowmen are some of the most versatile misile troops, and second most numerous part of armies of aurelian kingdoms. Indispensible as missile support for advancing infantry, in a siege both on and under the ramparts, or to clear the battlefield from those pesky light foot skirmishers, human crosbows proved themselves many times.
While not as agile as light infantry and not particularly usefull in pursuit, ther large pavise shields, and honed marksmanship, makes them a painful thorn in side of dwarven slingers, orc archers or in fact any other missile troops on the battlefield, while robust armour and cold arms proficiency, makes them more resilient to light troop sudden attacks.

The events of great peasant wars, and succeses of Ianpragite rebels, proved that disciplined and motivated infantry can stand their ground to charging masses of knights or arrowstorms of orc raiders. After the peace came, many warbands of seasoned warriors refused to go back to plough or loom, and decided to look for their fortune as professional soldiers or mercenaries, forming sometimes quite numerous armies for hire.
