What makes me me? Well, I’m 41. Married to the wonderful Amy. Dad to Noah and Oliver. Primary School Teacher. Crewe Alexandra fan (someone had to be). Cricket badger. Stroke survivor. Steam enthusiast, narrow gauge aficionado and model maker.
Like many others, it all started with Thomas the Tank and the Railway Series. I loved the books and the shows, particularly the Skarloey and Arlesdale lines. Consequently, I’ve enjoyed model railways since I was a child and always regretted picking an LNER Suburban Passenger set over a Thomas one as a 6-year old. Since then I have built a few models to (incredibly) varying standards before hitting a modellers block that has seen me fail to complete any layout since 2014.
After a long period modelling in 00 gauge it only took a few trips on real narrow gauge lines to persuade me that this was the way to go. A dip of the toe later – a couple of kits – and I was hooked in the narrower and miniature lines of our hobby with my focus tended to be towards the beautiful Talyllyn line, no doubt a legacy of all those readings and re-readings of the Skarloey books!
I hope this blog will be a journal of my model making. Who knows, I might even manage to see a layout through to completion… although, five years after the blog’s conception in 2019, this is yet to happen!
