Each summer, a number of camp programs in Massachusetts and beyond offer meaningful experiences for children, teens, and families who are grieving the death of a family member. While these programs are not affiliated with The Children’s Room, many are free or low-cost and may be a helpful resource for your family..

Hospice & Palliative Care of Martha’s Vineyard’s (HPCMV) family grief camp, Camp by the Sea, supports children in grades K-8 who have experienced the death of a loved one and their families. Camp by the Sea is offered at no cost to participants and combines grief support and education with fun activities such as face painting, arts & crafts, yoga class, pottery workshop, visiting farm animals, a meditative sound bath, and more to provide a safe place to explore grief, share memories, and make connections.

Camp Kita is a summer bereavement camp, located in Maine. Open to children ages 8-17 who are survivors of a loved one’s suicide, Camp Kita provides all of the quintessential experiences of a rural summer camp. Camp Mariposa is a free year-round addiction prevention and mentoring program  for youth ages 9-17 affected by the substance use disorder of a family member. The camp is offered 6 weekends a year at multiple locations around the U.S. It offers traditional camp activities along with education and support sessions led by mental health professionals and trained adult mentors. Additional social activities are offered for youth and their families throughout the year.

Camp Ramah Sasson (a program of Ramah New England) provides immersive Jewish experiences to families, children and young adults affected by serious illness, loss and its after effects. Camp Sunshine provides retreats combining respite, recreation and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families through the various stages of a child’s illness. Camp Sunshine’s program is offered year-round at its campus on Sebago Lake and has the distinction of having been designed to serve the entire family in a retreat model. The program is free of charge to families and includes on-site medical support. A bereavement session is also offered for families who have experienced the death of a child from a supported illness. Camps are offered by type of illness.

Comfort Zone Camp is a nonprofit bereavement organization that transforms the lives of children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver. Our programs are free of charge and include trust building activities and age-based support groups that break the emotional isolation grief often brings. Fleur de Lis Camp’s Circle Week is a free week of overnight summer camp for girls who have experienced the death of a parent. The TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) Good Grief Camp for children and teens provides support and comfort for children and teens facing the death of a loved one who served in the military. The safe and supportive atmosphere offers opportunities to learn coping skills, establish and identify support systems and create awareness that they are not alone in the grief of their loved one. Children and teens meet others of their own age to share and learn together. Each Good Grief Camp participant has a military mentor who serves as a companion throughout the weekend, providing them with special one-on-one attention and showing them that the military has not forgotten about them. Other summer camps are offered across the US.

Our signature summer program includes 7 sessions for children with serious illnesses and one session for their healthy siblings. Campers ages 7-15 ride horses, create crafts, swim and so much

more, as they bond with other children facing similar challenges and learn they are capable of so much more than they ever thought possible.
