Field and Column Terrain Pieces
Posted by chicagoterrainfactory in Terrain on February 18, 2025
I wanted a few new terrain pieces for the game table. The door matt field is a classic, but it needed to be jazzed up a little. A plastic card base was added to the matt, mud applied to the sides to blend the rubber base into the field (hot glue failed on the plastic card – weld bond succeeded). Dark green and light green clump foliage attached with hot glue and gaps covered with static grass. The ruin items might be a bit of an anachronism, but it does help set the mood. Full pillars made from Hirst Arts plaster casts, fractured columns a 3D print picked up at Adepticon a few years ago. 1/8 inch MDF base with the same mud texture and finished with static grass. Columns painted with Country Tan (craft paint) + Country Tan/White highlight. The mud worked much better on the MDF, the plastic card flexed causing the mud to crack.
Mud: Acrylic caulk, brown house paint, sand, tile Grout and rubbing alcohol.
Recipe taken from Eric’s Hobby Workshop at the 8 minute mark. The batch I made started to setup in the bowl, I suggest mixing small batches and use it quickly.
Armoured Celts & Triarii

A few bits and pieces for an upcoming To The Strongest project. Rather than using Hero chits, I’ve decided to use figures. Celts will stand with the Gallic tribes, Samnites and Etruscans. Someday, they will transition to the front line of an Armoured Celt unit – but that’s a project for another day. Triarii will stand with the Romans. They are also ready to be used as a small Triarii or spear armed Principe unit.
Crusader miniatures with the unarmored figure from Renegade(?).
Samnite skirmishing javelin unit. Yes, just 7 – one short. Figures a mix of Agema and Lancer.
Two more Gorgon Etruscans to fill out the First Class unit.
