While the goddess Athena has traditionally been regarded as the epic's divine planner and its hero's patron deity, I propose the theory that she is in fact the heroine of Homer's narrative. Through a fresh and innovative approach to Homer's most enigmatic female figure, I make a case for the Odyssey as a poetic symbol of masculine-feminine harmony, as well as a convergence of the human with the divine that is both beautiful and volatile.
