Lacquering is a distinctive Lan Na handicraft, which has existed for more than twelve centuries in northern Thailand. Traditional lacquer objects in the North of Thailand, called "Kreung Kheun" have two principal functions. First, the lacquer is used for coating bamboo houseware in order to make them water resistant. These products are light in weight and practical for daily use. Second, lacquer used to decorate objects with expressions of traditional beliefs. However, a changing way of life, influence from other cultures and globalization are gradually affecting Lan Na lacquer production The traditional knowledge of lacquer techniques has been disappearing because of decreasing numbers of lacquer artisans and raw materials. This practice-based research can be divided into two parts. First, it analyses the relevance of the field of study in order to understand the Lan Na people's traditional perspectives and beliefs towards lacquer objects, as well as the problems of Lan Na lacquer development. Second, it explores new perspectives that have been used for creating new lacquer objects. This ______________ 1 Lan Na region, was founded by Mangrai (r. c. 1259-1317) in the northern region of present-day Thailand; its capital was the city of Chiang Mai. New Perspectives on Lan Na Lacquering 40 Sumanatsya Voharn research attempts to analyse the acoustic properties of lacquer and materials, and utilizes traditional design forms when studying the creation of new objects The research outcome presents a new perspective by developing a line of contemporary lacquer objects "Acoustic Lacquer Accessories" (an adaptation from the traditional wooden pulpit to lacquer acoustic accessories). This presents a new perspective in Lan Na lacquer objects as a way to describe, conceptualize, and analyse Lan Na cultural characteristics through new "Traditional" form.

The meanings of sacred space and places in Thai context lie in the spiritual space, physical Space, social and cultural space and mind space. Thai sacred place is defined as a place that evokes a sense of sacredness of space and time that can help layman feel the same oneness with the nature.

Characteristics of Thai sacred place are
(1.) integrity in diversity,
(2.) hierarchy of spaces,
(3.) complex layers,
(4.) patchwork of overlap space,
(5.) blurred boundary,
(6.) flexibility ,
(7.) a symbolism space,
(8.) virtual space,
(9.) experience space.

Thai sacred place usually comprise these characteristics and the last but not less is the intangible aspects of spirit and feeling or “sense of place” Sense of place is the feeling or feelings that an individual experienced whenever they enter that place which are
(1.) a sense of awe,
(2.) a sense of wonder,
(3.) a sense of pride,
(4.) a sense of serenity,
(5.) a sense of belonging,
(6.) a sense of connection with the past, furthermore with high level of wisdom, some people will experienced
(7.) asenseofcomradeto the nature,
(8.)asenseofthesacred which is an appreciation and reverence for sacred things,
(9.) a sense of the absolute beauty and truth that stimulate the development of a higher level of wisdom that will ultimately lead to enlightenment.

This article interprets and illustrates some spatial characteristics of Thai sacred place that may lead to more comprehensive understanding of various dimension.

ในงานศิลปะและงานออกแบบ ทั้งจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรม มัณฑนศิลป์ ไปจนถึงสถาปัตยกรรมตั้งแต่อดีตถึงปัจจุบัน คติสุเมรุถูกนำมากล่าวอ้าง ใช้เป็นแนวความคิด ในเป็นเหตุผลในการทำงานออกแบบอยู่เสมอ จนบางครั้งทำให้เกิดถามขึ้นว่าศิลปิน-นักออกแบบ ออกแบบตามคติอย่างเคร่งครัด หรือนำคติมาใช้อธิบายงานหลังจากออกแบบเสร็จแล้ว หรือการทำงานออกแบบนั้นแทบไม่ได้คิดถึงคติสุเมรุเลย การอธิบายต่างๆเป็นเพียงการหาเหตุผลให้งานออกแบบของนักวิชาการ นักประวัติศาสตร์ศิลป์รุ่นหลัง

บทความนี้กล่าวถึงคติสุเมรุ ในฐานะ "อุปกรณ์" ในการแปลงภาวะ "นามธรรม" ให้ปรากฏเป็น "รูปธรรม"  ให้บุคคลทั่วไปสามารถมองเห็น สัมผัสจับต้องและรับรู้ได้  นำเสนอสาระและความหมายของคติสุเมรุในมุมมองที่ต่างไป กล่าวคือ คติสุเมรุ คือ หลักเหตุผลชุดหนึ่งในการจัดระบบคิดด้วยวิธีการต่างๆไม่ว่าจะเป็นการแยกแยะจัดประเภท การผสมผสาน และการจัดการความสัมพันธ์ของสิ่งต่างๆ  เป็นที่มาของจิตสำนึกและรูปแบบการดำรงอยู่ในชีวิตประจำวันของสังคม คติสุเมรุมีความสำคัญในฐานะ "ฐานคิด" ของผู้คนในสังคม เป็นสิ่งหล่อหลอมทัศนคติของคนไทยที่มีต่อธรรมชาติและทุกสิ่งรอบตัว  คติภูเขาศักดิ์สิทธ์ิมี "สุเมรุ" เป็นศูนย์กลางของโลก เมื่อมนุษย์สามารถกำหนดตำแหน่งแห่งที่ของตนได้ เขาจะทราบโดยอัตโนมัติว่า ตนมีสิทธิ์ หน้าที่ และจะต้องมีท่าที จะต้องปฏิบัติเช่นไรกับสิ่งรอบตัว ทั้งธรรมชาติ สิ่งมีชีวิต บุคคล สัตว์ สิ่งของ ไปจนถึงสิทธิ์และหน้าที่ต่อสังคมทั้งในโลกสามัญและโลกศักดิ์สิทธิ์อันเป็นเป้าหมายของชีวิตในอุดมคติ ความหมายนี้ถูกอธิบายผ่านอุปกรณ์คืองานศิลปะและงานออกแบบ โดยใช้สถาปัตยกรรมและมัณฑนศิลป์เป็นกรณีตัวอย่าง

The meanings of sacred space and places in Thai context varies. It lies in the spiritual space, physical Space, social and cultural space and mind space.
In Thai notions, sacred spaces and sacred place is defined as a place that evokes a sense of sacredness of space and time. It can help layman feel the same oneness with the nature. In Thai context, sacred place is not the sole preserve of certain religions, faiths or the holy power.
Rather its meaning is accessible to all. In this sense, the sacred and the secular combine. Everyone can experience the sacredness of a place through their senses, including their consciousness and they can experience in daily life.


The Concepts of Thai Sacred Space and Place are
(1.) the concept about the system and the interconnection of all things,
(2.) the concept of helix time which states that things will return almost to the original state and each turn of the spiral goes either upwards or downwards, depending on the person’s actions and karma and
(3.) the concept of the human relationships and the relationship between human being and nature that determine the actions and behaviours of human beings as well as their relationship with other human beings and their surroundings. These concepts manifest in sacred place in the symbolism that represent in various part of sacred place both tangible aspect and intangible aspects of spirit and feeling or “sense of place”

Sense of place is the feeling or feelings that an individual experiences when in the presence of that place. From study and experience Thai sacred place, sense of Thai sacred place comprise a sense of awe, a sense of wonder, a sense of pride, a sense of serenity, a sense of belonging,etc. thatstimulatethedevelopmentofahigherlevelofwisdomthatwillultimately lead to enlightenment.

Sacred place cannot be measured by any tool even if by a language of a secular object. However, we can perceive it by individual inner sense. The aim of this paper is to propose a new path to protect sacred architecture by regaining spiritual experiences. Referring to intention, sacred architecture is a medium used in interpreting the ultimate truth by manifesting abstract meaning through myths, the sacred space, the metaphoric materials and the motif of elements that affect our senses.

The sacred architecture cannot be conserved by any secular-based methods. Also it cannot be judged by any sort of figuring or calculating. A way forward is to enhance senses by using consecrated mind as well as relying on cognitive avidity to experience the notion of its phenomena that are beyond visual sensation. The more it is perceived and comprehended, the more clearly intuitive methods and alternative ways to protect the sacred place are. Using a sacred architecture case study, the paper illustrates the idea assumed.

Joi is a form of a traditional song using lyric from Kao, a form of Lanna traditional literature. Joi have three singing styles called " Labam " ; Labam Wing Won, Labam Kong Hiaw Bong, and Labam Ma Yam Fai. This article presents a description of the melodic style of Joi based on the concept of Ethnomusicology and Linguistics. There are three main issues that are presented. 1) Uean, to draw the voice in Thai-style melismatic singing between two words of a song, have three styles; moving pitch uean, long-tone uean, and uean in a word. 2) There are four characteristics of melodic organization of Joi; Tam Nong Lak (main melodic line), Tam Nong Rong (secondary melodic line), Tam Nong Serm (supported melody), and Tam Nong Sum (repeated melody). 3) The creating of Joi melodies related to the intonation of Thai Northern vernacular language by three approaches; parallel motion with tonal marks, contrary motion with tonal marks, and independent deviation from tonal makes.

The aim of this article is to explore the development of Lanna music teachers and musicians' (LT&Ms) identity based on a community and cultural context. LT&Ms' identity refer to the self-understanding and the expression as a Lanna music teacher and musician. LT&Ms' identity were developed by factors and complicated procedure. One of the important factors is the community where is the space of Lanna society and culture. All issues are presented with six LT&Ms' music experience in the community and cultural context by phenomenological approach. Four issues are presented in this article; 1) learning a music skill, 2) learning a culture and function of music, 3) learning a social change and adaptation, 4) learning a self-expression as LT&Ms in a real situation. Understanding of LT&Ms' identity development affects our awareness and knowledge of musical identity development involving Lanna music education management.
