Design Wall Wednesday #4

First up – a design that is actually off the wall now. I finished this top on Monday and it is screaming spring! It was fun to add those “flower” blocks to my stars (from The Avenue Quilt). I have had that pattern long enough to know I am not going to make an entire quilt. This was the perfect way to make a few of the blocks and extend this quilt top. I added the checkerboard to make the top finish at 60” square. This project used up almost all of my bright prints stash and almost all of that black and white polka dot (just enough left for binding). This one will be headed to the machine quilter.

On the design wall now – some fabric inspiration for a new quilt. I have wanted to participate in the Pantone Quilt Challenge for a few years but didn’t find the right inspiration. You may know that the Pantone Color of the Year is Cloud Dancer – or white. I remember there was a bit of chatter about that choice but I didn’t really pay attention until I saw the quilt challenge announcement last week. I have been using a lot of white/low volume fabrics in my quilts the last few years so I think I have enough stash for a stash buster project. I have a few ideas brewing. This challenge begins next week so I will be narrowing down those ideas over the next few days.

Finally, this project is not on the wall but it is tapping into my creative time. A few years ago, I did 100 days of knitting socks. I learned so much about sock knitting during those 100 days. I tried to come up with another 100 day project a few times but was not successful. I have had circles on my mind a lot lately so I have decided to do 100 days of circles – appliqué, embroidery, sketch and watercolor, maybe even crocheted circles (if I can learn how to crochet). Four days in and I am still on top of this idea. We will see how that goes. I would love to hear if any of you are doing this project. The 100 Day Project just started on the 22nd so you would not be far behind if you start today.

Design Wall Wednesday #3

The wall has taken a bit of a swing. I decided the squircles would make a nice enter for some wonky stars (using the Star Hollow pattern) and the green check would be a good break for all of that solid green. Not sure how many star blocks I will make but the squircles would also make a nice border to those blocks.

I paired up all the polka dot stars with the second star pieces and set them by machine to make it easy to get them sewing. I only have one sewn because this week is also sewing with gramma week and there were some pajamas to be made. (I did most of the work but the boys got to sew some of the straight seams and the pockets). I will leave that stack of star pieces by the machine and hope to get them all pieced this week.

The embroidery hoop holds something that I am playing with – more pairing of words and fabric. I learned a lot making this piece and will be using some of that learning to make another one.

And that brown piece of linen in the center? Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of the season of Lent. I am going to be embroidering that piece of cloth over the next six weeks as a daily practice.

Some of you said you have a bulletin board with bit of inspiration (as opposed to a design board). I have one too. This bulletin is on the wall next to my desk. Most of the items on the board have been there for a while. Each one reminds me of the people who have been important to my creative journey. I love to see this each time I come to work at my desk.

Happy Wednesday. I hope you are finding bits of joy and inspiration in these last weeks of winter.
