Design Wall Wednesday #3

The wall has taken a bit of a swing. I decided the squircles would make a nice enter for some wonky stars (using the Star Hollow pattern) and the green check would be a good break for all of that solid green. Not sure how many star blocks I will make but the squircles would also make a nice border to those blocks.

I paired up all the polka dot stars with the second star pieces and set them by machine to make it easy to get them sewing. I only have one sewn because this week is also sewing with gramma week and there were some pajamas to be made. (I did most of the work but the boys got to sew some of the straight seams and the pockets). I will leave that stack of star pieces by the machine and hope to get them all pieced this week.

The embroidery hoop holds something that I am playing with – more pairing of words and fabric. I learned a lot making this piece and will be using some of that learning to make another one.

And that brown piece of linen in the center? Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of the season of Lent. I am going to be embroidering that piece of cloth over the next six weeks as a daily practice.

Some of you said you have a bulletin board with bit of inspiration (as opposed to a design board). I have one too. This bulletin is on the wall next to my desk. Most of the items on the board have been there for a while. Each one reminds me of the people who have been important to my creative journey. I love to see this each time I come to work at my desk.

Happy Wednesday. I hope you are finding bits of joy and inspiration in these last weeks of winter.

Design Wall Wednesday #2

The design wall is proving some much needed color this week. I made nine of the polka dot star blocks and all of the pieces for the outer stars. I completed one block to give me the measurements I will need to decide on a border.

I also pulled out my Steam Punk blocks (Jen Kingwell) to check my progress on that project. I thought I had more completed blocks but discovered only four blocks assembled. There are another six in various states of completion so I can add that to my finish it up list.

In the lower right corner are the first of my squircle blocks. I found these on Elizabeth’s blog and was immediately smitten. I have 2.5 yards of that “green” fabric and plan to use it for the backgrounds. These will be a lovely hand stitching project and will likely live next to my couch.

I am slightly ahead of schedule with my stitch book pages (loosely following along with Ann Wood). I printed my one little words on fabric and will stitch one to each of the pages. Many of the pages also have a poem or quote inked on the base fabric and then covered with fabrics. I have been threading multiple needles on the days when there is good light which has been very helpful. The grey rectangle on the bottom left will become a cover for a small notebook. I started this on a whim, trying to let it evolve without overthinking.

Many of you have mentioned that you would love to have a design wall. Mine has evolved over the years and I am very fortunate to have a large wall for this use. But it doesn’t need to be large. I stared with a 24”x36” bulletin board and used it to pin up pictures and bits of fabrics to inspire my making. If start a board, I would love to hear about it.
