BigCommerce Statistics: Up-to-Date Stats That Help Define the BigCommerce Platform
Online sales platform BigCommerce is something of a quiet giant. Generally speaking, the company isn’t as well-known as, say, Shopify or Adobe Commerce (formerly Magento).
Their user base is smaller, too: Shopify has nearly 100x the number of sites being powered by BigCommerce. But then again, size isn’t everything.
For new merchants, or established sellers needing additional flexibility, BigCommerce can still be a smart choice. Right out of the gate, this turnkey platform offers more built-in features than Shopify. At the same time, it doesn’t saddle you with the complexity of Adobe or WooCommerce, so you can get up and running quickly.
If you’d like a better picture of BigCommerce's power, security, and usability, you’re in the right place. This post digs into some of the key stats reflecting the company’s present and potential. If you just want a super-quick overview, though, I’ll start with some key estimated figures:

Still reading? Great! Let’s break down what some of these stats mean in practical terms.
Because BigCommerce does not publish all platform metrics, some of my statistics are deduced based on third-party research, merchant surveys, or industry benchmarks.

What is BigCommerce?
BigCommerce is an online sales platform that gives merchants the tools necessary to accomplish a number of essential business functions:
- Create an online store (product pages, shopping carts, etc.)
- Check out customers securely
- Accept payments (credit cards, PayPal, etc.)
- Manage inventory
- Handle shipping and taxes
- Track orders, sales, and deliveries
An estimated 42,000 merchants worldwide use BigCommerce. Industry giant Shopify, on the other hand, has 4.2 million users. While they’re obviously not going to threaten Shopify’s numbers, BigCommerce still offers some notable benefits in certain circumstances. It’s typically a better fit for stores that:
- Need to start quickly, and have minimal technological expertise
- Want strong built-in features without installing many apps
- Offer a wide catalog of different products
- Are a wholesaler, offering different pricing for different customers
BigCommerce is a platform that works well for businesses that have outgrown simple “plug-and-play” tools, but who don’t want the complexity of enterprise systems. That said, it can still work well for larger merchants. In fact, the company has lately been more focused on increasing its adoption by enterprise clients, as well as strengthening its already strong B2B presence.
BigCommerce Financial Statistics
BigCommerce processes somewhere north of $30 billion in annual sales through its merchants.
Unlike many tech brands that sacrifice margins for rapid, cash-burning growth, the company has traditionally focused on a more margin-conscious (and therefore more sustainable) business model. Rather than taking a chunk out of every sale, BigCommerce generates most of its revenue through subscription plans. In fiscal year 2024, the company generated $332.9 million in total revenue. That translates to an 8% year-over-year increase.

We'll talk more about that later on.
How Big is BigCommerce?
Like I alluded to at the top, BigCommerce is far from being the largest sales platform out there. But, they’ve nevertheless carved their own dedicated niche in the ecosystem, powering over 40,000 active online stores around the world. And, just over two-thirds of the platform’s total user base — a little over 28,000 stores — are located in the US.

Who Uses BigCommerce?
BigCommerce supports payments from merchants and customers in roughly 230 countries, handles transactions in more than 140 currencies, and represents a wide cross-section of sellers.
Retail companies represent roughly 18% of BigCommerce merchants, making it the largest merchant category. Home and Garden is the most common vertical, with about 6,800 stores globally, followed by Apparel with roughly 5,700 stores. No surprise there: the order is similar to other platforms. Automotive and Vehicle merchants round out the top three, with 3,160 stores.
Many suppliers in the Automotive and Vehicle space use eCommerce for wholesale and distribution, not just direct sales. Large SKU counts, variations, and compatibility requirements also play to BigCommerce’s strengths.

Enterprise Customer Metrics & Merchant Size Distribution
BigCommerce seems to operate on the “quality vs. quantity” principle. Instead of trying to be everything to everyone, the company focuses more on acquiring the clientele that will most benefit from its particular strengths.
Put another way, BigCommerce’s growth seems driven less by sheer store count and more by the size and needs of the merchants using it. They cater more to larger businesses, for example; enterprise merchants generate the biggest chunk of the platform’s recurring revenue, even without being the largest portion of BigCommerce’s overall client base.

About 1 in 7 active BigCommerce stores are large enterprise merchants. That’s right around 14% of total merchants on the platform, which is unusually high compared to other eCommerce platforms. Small or startup companies only make up around 50% of their stable; for comparison, Shopify’s number is closer to 90%.
In this context, “enterprise” accounts are defined as businesses generating $400,000+ in annual online sales.

Traffic & SEO Performance Metrics
Organic SEO results don’t depend on your eCommerce platform nearly as much as more generic factors like page optimization, site speed, and internal linking. If you’re trying to be found by search engines, though, BigCommerce does present a few advantages that can strengthen your other SEO efforts.
BigCommerce stores often do well in organic searches due to the platform’s strong built-in SEO features: a cleaner URL structure, for example, along with fewer required apps.
Also, BigCommerce handles your hosting and infrastructure: if implemented correctly, your site will likely load faster and stay stable; a couple of perks which contribute to higher Google rankings.

BigCommerce Future Growth & Strategic Outlook
So what does BigCommerce’s future hold? For starters, the company expects to achieve GAAP profitability in 2026 for the first time in its history, with cash (and cash equivalents) projected to exceed long‑term debt by mid‑2026.
On a more concrete level, BigCommerce is working with PayPal to launch BigCommerce Payments in 2026. That’s going to give you more local and alternative payment options. It’s also expected to provide new AI-driven fraud detection tools. Not only will you get automatic detection and blocking of more fraudulent sales, the new tools are also designed to help legitimate orders get through the system quickly and safely.
Fraud and chargebacks are a serious threat to online businesses.
In-platform tools are a good start, but ultimately you need a more comprehensive prevention strategy. Let us show you how much you could benefit.

BigCommerce is actually leaning pretty heavily into AI. In fact, 2025 saw the company unifying the BigCommerce brand with its other business units, Feedonomics and Makeswift. All now function under the single parent identity, Commerce.
BigCommerce is also investing significantly in AI partnerships and integration as part of positioning the platform for “agentic commerce” and next‑generation discovery experiences. Working with major AI players indicates BigCommerce sees the potential in AI‑assisted discovery, personalization, and commerce automation.

BigCommerce’s strong targeting on B2B and enterprise customers demonstrates a shift toward higher-value accounts, a strategy designed to deepen recurring revenue while driving long-term, profitable growth.
Leaning into AI-powered technologies also gives BigCommerce a competitive edge, as merchants are increasingly adopting automation processes. AI-powered tools can dramatically improve inventory management and SKU tracking, offering advanced service in areas where BigCommerce is already strong.
