Mobility in Great Maputo

Key elements to understanding mobility in Greater Maputo:

  • General:   the economy is growing fast but with some important gaps: corruption and unbalanced distribution of profits.

  • The total saturation of collective transport with extremely degrading travel conditions for the users.

  • The fast growth in the numbers of cars resulting in the classical consequences (an increase of car accidents, traffic jams, pollution, parking in pedestrian areas and the widening gap  in conditions and access to the city between the rich and poor)

  • The future development of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system under the Urban Transport Master Plan for Greater Maputo made by the Japanese Cooperation in 2012.
