Since I have been severely remiss in rec'ing things (and adding them to my pinboard at all, shh), I'm going to try to do a weekly recs post, every Friday. This will include everything I read since the previous Friday, as well as anything else I saw during that week that I feel like sharing (so, occasionally you'll see some vids). Bonus section at the end for things I've reread, but never rec'd in a weekly post before!

Since this week's post is tiny anyway, I went back to January 1st. His full attention was on not trampling the people he had to squeeze past, and Steve was able to check him out. Not that he was checking him out, or anything. He was just… you know… looking. It wasn't even like he was looking for… he was just… damn but Hot Dad was… hot.

Not that Steve was checking him out. I feel like this reaction is 100% something Bucky would do.

And Steve is right here, napping, with his head on his arm on Bucky's bed. No visible hurts to Steve's arm or his dear idiot face, Bucky notes with relief, and Steve's sleeping comfortably; the fight must have ended soon after Bucky went down, or else the shield just did its job and protected Captain America. Bucky ought to let Steve sleep, but he can't help himself—it helps to hear Steve's voice, see the look in his eyes—so he gives Steve's arm a nudge. It's pretty much true, though; just one more nap and the super-serum will take care of the aches he's feeling now.

Steve frowns at Bucky anyway, eyes big with concern, and Bucky twines his hand with Steve's before he drops off again.

The Amazing Adventures of Bucky Barnes by nouvellenouveau [Steve/Bucky | PG | 11,403 words]
Steve writes and illustrates the Amazing Adventures, a series of children's books about superheroes. When Bucky's daughter asks for a signed copy of the newest book for her birthday, Bucky ends up with more than just a great birthday present. This is adorable and sweet, with great characterization and a great Bucky POV. I love the throughline of the definitions, especially in a story about books. Really nicely-done slow build of a relationship between Bucky and Steve, and a great fusion with canon.

"Hey Dad?"

"Hmm?"

"I've decided what I want for my ninth birthday."

Bucky looks at his daughter. Bucky adopts a serious expression to match her own.

"And what is that?"

"I'd like a signed copy of the next Amazing Adventures book."

He is, unsurprisingly, unsurprised.

"We'll see," he says instead, and they leave it at that. I just loved this. I loved all of the comparisons between being in the gym for prom vs being there for the reunion, and just the backstory of how Brian got from high school to now. But my favorite thing is the small moments between Brian and Claire and Brian and John and how you can tell that, unlike the acquaintances Brian can barely do small talk with, those relationships are real despite years apart. Just wonderful.

"She didn't even graduate with us," one griped. "She was in Night School."

He turned to see where they were looking and found an unmistakable head of red hair.

"Excuse me," he said, but Charlie Novak had already trapped someone else into his dissection of the Bears' offensive line, so Brian just walked over to tap Claire on the shoulder.

Claire looked back at him for a moment, blank and vaguely confused, but then she looked down at his nametag and her eyes went wide. She covered her gasp with her hands, and then flung her arms out to hug him, all before Brian recovered from that first uneasy swoop of having been forgotten. "Oh my God, look at you!" she cooed. It wasn't far off from how everyone else had reacted to him, but something about how Claire said it reminded him of his favorite aunt.

Big Bri's House [Bender/Brian | PG-13 | 2,410 words]
They don't all magically become BFFs after that weekend, but some things do change for the better. So that explained how Bender had appeared out of nowhere.

"Because it's...Friday night?"

"I have to work tomorrow," Brian repeated, but he wasn't due in until 9:30 to open and Bender was standing there making simultaneous masturbatory motions with both hands and Brian knew his argument was weak. He checked his watch. "It's eleven-thirty. My parents aren't going to let me leave now. Maybe if I'd gone out earlier..."

"Your parents won't know, because we're gonna go out this window," Bender explained patiently, shoving a thumb over his shoulder at the curtains fluttering in the breeze. "You live in the basement and you never sneak out of the house?"

"I sneak out," Brian protested.

"Get a coat," Bender said, flipping hair out of his eyes. "Come on."

"I sneak out constantly," Brian muttered, pulling the new suede jacket Allison had talked him into out of his closet. Achy and hopeful in the best ways.

("They catch me when I'm twenty-six," Cassie tells him one night after she's ducked under his covers, huddled into the small space he makes for her on his bed. She'll always be the girl with terrible hair choices who had too much bravado for a thirteen year old, but there's moments that summer when she's sitting in her striped bikini on their small, broken deck playing sudoku where he forgets that she's not his, that she shouldn't be sleeping in his bed and living in his heart this way.

That the way he's been looking at and feeling about her is dangerous.

Red Dwarf

Alternate Universe [Lister/Rimmer | PG-13 | 1,745 words]
Five AU tropes they never did on Red Dwarf and one they sort of did. It's my favorite time of year because I get to see and hang out with people I know from the internet, and meet new people who I will then go on to stalk on the internet (in a totally not-creepy-at-all way, I swear)! Getting to talk fannish things in person is seriously the most amazing thing ever, and it's why I kept going to Wincon when it was still Winchestercon, even though I wasn't in the SPN fandom anymore. (In case you didn't know, Wincon used to be a Supernatural con, but switched to multifandom in 2010, and we have had a huge variety of panels and activities in a wide variety of fandoms for the last 5 cons.)

We've typically had about ~100 attendees per year, but that size is just not sustainable for us anymore. As you know, cons are expensive. The less people that attend, the more expensive they are. Our tickets are usually in the $100-$115 range, and so a lot of people who would probably have an amazing time don't come, because they can't afford it. And we want everyone who is interested in a fans-only fancon to come and (hopefully) have a great time!

So, for 2015, we are trying to make the con more affordable (and get even more people to come, because seriously it is the most fun and even more people means even more awesomeness!), so we want to grow to 250-300 attendees. This would allow us to offer the weekend pass for $55 (or $65 if you want to attend Winprom, our Saturday night dance party). But we can't do it without you! We're running an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to finance the con for 2015, which you can check out right here. We're trying to raise $15,000 by January 4th, but if we don't fully fund the Indiegogo, we won't get any of the money, and we won't be having Wincon 2015. Or any other Wincon.

Basically, it boils down to this: if we can't fund Wincon through this Indiegogo, there will be no more Wincon. 2014 will have been our last con.

It honestly makes me want to cry just thinking about the con ending, because I've had some of the most fun in my life at Wincon over the years. I knew literally no one before my first con (LA in 2007), and I am really shy meeting people in person, but I met a lot of great people over that weekend that I still hang out with to this day. The atmosphere is so welcoming every year, and you can participate in as much or as little as you want to, which is awesome for those times when you just want to hermit, rather than having a lot of social interaction. Plus, I've gotten to visit a whole bunch of places I wouldn't normally go, since we hold the con in a different city every year. 2015 is scheduled for Pittsburgh, at a gorgeous hotel that's right downtown and close to a bunch of cool stuff.

I could write another few thousand words about why I love Wincon so much, so feel free to ask me anything about the con if you're interested. I would love for you to check out the Indiegogo and buy a ticket for Wincon 2015, or buy one of the awesome perks we have for sale (art commissions, knitting, fancraft-y things, etc. -- more will be going up tomorrow, actually!). Or even donate a few bucks out of the goodness of your heart, to keep a long-running fan con going into its 10th Anniversary (and beyond, hopefully).

Any help that you guys would be willing to give would be much appreciated. Everything has been fact checked as much as humanly possible with sources from Captain America: The First Avenger (CATFA) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (CATWS), along with some RL sources regarding the timeline for WWII. Hopefully some of you will find this useful.

Needless to say, this post contains massive spoilers for CATWS.

First, I'm going to talk about my theories about the creation of the Winter Soldier in the MCU, and debunk some of the stuff I've seen going around, like the persistent theory that Arnim Zola created the Winter Soldier. The actual timeline is at the end of this post.

Please keep in mind that a lot of this is conjecture, but I've backed that up with facts as much as possible. The timeline itself only contains information that can be backed up by canon.

After the Fall: Bucky Becomes the Winter Soldier and Zola joins S.H.I.E.L.D.
In the last third of CATFA, Bucky falls from the train and is presumed dead. Zola is taken into SSR custody and questioned by Colonel Phillips. He reveals Schmidt's plan of total destruction, which is to go into effect in two days. Steve et. al. confront Schmidt and stop his dastardly schemes, and then Steve crashes Schmidt's plane into the ice. I could talk for thousands of words about Steve's mindset after losing his best friend and only family, and how heartbreaking it is that he barely lasts a week after Bucky's death before going to his own, but that's another post entirely. This one is about the Winter Soldier.

In the comics, the Russians find Bucky's body. His dead body. They manage to revive his corpse (by attempting to revive him as though he had just died, cause that would totally work), albeit with no memory of who he used to be. Then, they use their technology to make him into the perfect operative, giving him fluency in languages, weapons training, any other skill sets or information that he will need to complete his next mission.

The MCU is telling a different story, though. Based on the Soldier's flashbacks (which I will dissect below), you could make the argument that whatever Zola did to him after the 107th was captured at Azzano kept him alive after his fall, albeit probably barely alive (or mostly dead, if you prefer). He was found by someone, experimented on, and turned into their perfect operative. You can make a strong case for him being found by the Russians (we'll get to that).

He strongly associates Zola with his transformation into the Winter Soldier (or at least with the experimentation done on him by his new masters), so at the very least, we can say he was definitely experimented on after Azzano. Whether it was something that resulted in him surviving the fall, or just the same type of torture he endured at the hands of the people who made him into the Soldier, we don't know for sure.

I don't believe that the "Sergeant Barnes...the procedure has already started" voiceover in the flashback was from the period immediately after he was found by whoever-it-was that found him. Zola was simply not available to do any experiments on anyone for at least six months after Bucky's death.

[As a side note, despite the date of death in the Smithsonian exhibit, I have to fanwank it as being in 1945, since Steve dies in '45, and there is no way that the events between Bucky's fall and Steve's plane crash are longer than a week's worth of time. Either it's 1945, or that was the worst Christmas/New Years ever].

To quote the wikipedia article on Operation Paperclip:

Operation Paperclip was the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) program used to recruit the scientists of Nazi Germany for employment by the United States in the aftermath of World War II. It was conducted by the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency (JIOA), and in the context of the burgeoning Cold War. One purpose of Operation Paperclip was to deny German scientific expertise and knowledge to the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom, as well as inhibiting post-war Germany from redeveloping its military research capabilities.

Although the JIOA's recruitment of German scientists began after the Allied victory in Europe on May 8, 1945, U.S. President Harry Truman did not formally order the execution of Operation Paperclip until August 1945.
Presumably, the Operation Paperclip in the MCU had a similar timeline. Until we hear otherwise, I'm going to take the leap and say it's the same timeline. So, Zola was captured by the SSR at some point in early 1945, and recruited to the newly-formed S.H.I.E.L.D. sometime between May and September of 1945, being kept as a POW until then. We don't know anything about what his activities were during his time with S.H.I.E.L.D., other than that he began planting the seeds of HYDRA right away. It is unlikely that they allowed him to go off on his own to do anything, let alone meet with shady people in other countries who were in possession of technology that would lead to the Winter Soldier's creation.

The Winter Soldier's Flashback and Creation
First, a breakdown of the scenes in the flashback:

We see Zola's face, hear him saying "Sergeant Barnes".

Cut to shots of the train going through a tunnel, Steve yelling "Bucky no!" and Bucky falling.

Zola VO: "the procedure has already started" over a guy in giant Russian fur hat finding the body, dragging it through the snow, blood trailing from the stump of Bucky's arm.

Cut to a medical facility, where his stump is removed and replaced with the metal arm.

Zola VO: "You are to be the new fist of HYDRA". If we go by what happens in the comics, he gets put in cryo for extended periods when he's not needed, and they will routinely mess around in his brain to add things and take things out. Pierce's cavalier attitude toward this process ("prep him", "wipe him and start over") leads me to think it's a routine thing. And we know what happens to something when it's erased and rewritten over and over and over: it degrades. So, there is literally no reason for us to assume that the flashback is 100% accurate or even that everything is in chronological order.

The interesting thing about Zola in this flashback is that whenever we see him, he looks nice and genial, and is wearing what he was wearing during several scenes in the middle of CATFA (labcoat, glasses, bowtie). We hear the voiceover, but his mouth never moves, other than when he says, "Sergeant Barnes". This is deliberate, and I believe the filmmakers are saying that we should relate Zola-during-CATFA with the torture the Winter Soldier is experiencing at the hands of his new masters, but not that Zola was the one pulling the strings of the Winter Soldier's creation.

I think the Soldier's subconscious mind recognized the voice that told him (when he was brought out of cryo by HYDRA for the first time) that he would be the new fist of HYDRA. After seeing Steve and having things jogged, his brain made the connection between that moment and the person who had tortured him back in 1943 when he was Bucky Barnes. All of the constant writing and rewriting, and all of the cryo, clearly messed with his mind, and things are all jumbled up in there and out of order, but the relationship is clearly there.

I have a hard time believing that Bucky's body was either a) found six months or more after he fell, which would be the earliest I can imagine Zola would be available to oversee experiments, or b) found immediately and then just shoved in cold storage for a while until Zola could work his magic. We see Bucky's body being dragged through the snow, blood trailing from the stump of his arm. That implies a relatively fresh wound, which eliminates option A, but B doesn't seem much more likely. Why stick a body in cold storage and leave it there in case you might have a use for it later? Logic dictates that whatever was done to Bucky was done right after he was retrieved.

So, he's found and revived, the remaining portion of his arm is cut off, and they do what? Let him heal for a while? Press him into service for the cause immediately? Does he know who he is at all? Is he just a blank slate that doesn't remember being a person, like he is in the comics? Does he know he's Bucky Barnes? Is he aware of where he is, aware that he fell because Steve couldn't save him in time? Is he waiting for Steve to come rescue him like he did the last time he was captured by HYDRA? Or is he an empty vessel, ready to be filled up with whatever his masters choose to give him?

Basically, I need Cap 3 right now, so we can maybe possibly get those answers, but since I don't have a time machine, I'm going to take a leap and say that if he remembers anything at that point, it's patchy due to trauma, and because whatever Zola used on him wasn't as good as the formula Erskine perfected on Steve. I don't think he remembers anything, though.

The Russians vs. HYDRA
So, this takes care of what happened to Bucky and Zola during and post-CATFA, but how do they meet up again? How do we get to the Winter Soldier becoming "the new fist of HYDRA"? This portion of the timeline is super in flux, and contains a lot of conjecture that will probably get jossed in one way or another, but with the evidence we have from CATWS, and from comics canon, I believe that the Russians used the Winter Soldier as their operative during the Cold War (same as in the comics), and that HYDRA took possession of him during the confusion over the fall of the Soviet Union.

The person that finds him is wearing a big fur hat, a great stereotypical visual shorthand for "Russian". I believe that the Russians found him, gave him a metal arm with a their symbol branded on it (so that everyone knew whose property the Winter Soldier was), experimented on him, and turned him into an assassin. Whether you believe that whatever Zola did to him after the 107th was captured at Azzano allowed him to survive the fall, or whether you go by comics canon that says he was dead, but basically being flash-frozen after the explosion allowed the Russians to bring him back to life (with no memories of being Bucky) is irrelevant to the actual timeline of events.

I don't believe that the Russians who found Bucky were part of HYDRA. HYDRA membership seems to mainly be concentrated to Germans at the time of Bucky's fall (yeah, Zola is Swiss, but work with me here), and the Germans and Russians were not allies in 1945.

HYDRA (and Zola) probably didn't come into the picture until they were able to rise to power inside S.H.I.E.L.D., and Zola wasn't in a position to take control of the Winter Soldier without S.H.I.E.L.D. becoming suspicious of his activities.

Also, why would HYDRA even want the Winter Soldier right after his creation if he hadn't been tested and proven to be a successful operative? Captain America was dead at the time, so using their control over his best friend's mind and body as a weapon against him wasn't an option. Bucky on his own is not a powerful bargaining chip, but a tried and tested operative, one with a legacy as infamous as the Winter Soldier's is.

The Winter Soldier is thought to have been responsible for two dozen assassinations over "the last 50 years" according to Natasha. That suggests it took a while for his legacy to build, but that once HYDRA had secure footing and began to influence events to best serve their cause, the Soldier was probably known in intelligence circles.

Zola received a terminal diagnosis, and his mind was transferred to computer in 1972. I'm going to take a leap and say that HYDRA brought in the Winter Soldier after Zola was uploaded. Zola's algorithm appears to have been created after Zola's physical body died, and with that algorithm, HYDRA knew what pieces they'd have to remove or put in play in order to shape the future to suit their needs. It would make sense that once the algorithm was developed, it led HYDRA to the conclusion that they would benefit greatly from having control of the Winter Soldier.

It's doubtful that the Russians would want to give him up that easily, so it's hard to say when HYDRA would have taken possession of him, but I'm thinking it was during the confusion and upheaval of the fall of the Soviet Union. This occurred in December of 1991.

Howard and Maria Stark were killed on December 17, 1991, nine days before the fall of the Soviet Union. This is confirmed to have been an attack perpetrated by the Winter Soldier. HYDRA is the organization most likely to benefit from and desire the Starks' deaths, so it is likely that HYDRA ordered this attack.

So, HYDRA was in control of the Winter Soldier in December of 1991, but we don't have any conclusive evidence of when exactly they took over his ownership. I really hope Cap 3 answers these questions, but in the meantime, it's open to interpretation.

Timeline of Events
Here is the actual timeline of events that can be corroborated by either CATFS or CATWS. Colonel Phillips specifically mentions that the plan is scheduled to go down in two days.

Two days later:

Captain America, the Howling Commandos, and the SSR storm the HYDRA base to stop Schmidt. Steve is left alone on the plane.

The plane is on an unalterable course to destroy New York, so Steve radios SSR command and tells Peggy that he has to put the plane in the water. He just didn't.

Regarding Bucky's survival or lack thereof after the fall: whether you believe that Zola's experiments on him caused him to survive the fall, or that (like in the comics) he didn't survive and was reanimated by the Russians, the timeline of events doesn't change. The only thing that really changes is what was done to his body. Admittedly, I go back and forth on this, but you can make a case for either with the available evidence.

HYDRA wasn't the Winter Soldier's only master. If you hated it, you might want to skip!

I'm so pleased at how the quality of the show is improving every week! I said at some point in the last month that I thought it was going to start getting really interesting and taking off between episodes 5-10, and clearly I was totally right! So, some random thoughts in more-or-less no particular order, but divided into sections:

The Plot/Season Arc Stuff

I love how this deepened the Centipede mystery! Bringing back the doctor from the pilot was a great reveal, and I thought Raina was a super interesting character, and will love if she continues to have as much power and agency as she seemed to have this week. I really need to know what they're up to, and who that dude at the end was, and who this Clairvoyant is, too -- is this someone with actual mental powers, something that SHIELD says hasn't been proven to exist, or is that a goofy "superhero" name like Scorch? Or both?

nerdwegian brought up the interesting point last night that Centipede could be working with AIM, which I think makes a lot of sense. In IM3, Killian was clearly the head of a very successful company, which I'd assume was way larger than what we saw, so Centipede could be one part of that. Plus, Centipede is experimenting with a serum that contains Extremis, so having AIM be involved somehow would totally make sense. If AIM continues to be a player in the MCU maybe they'll go closer to their comics roots, with MODOK and the Scientist Supreme and stuff like that (though hopefully not those silly yellow beekeeper-esque outfits!).

I love that they're continuing to remind us that SHIELD is kind of creepy and not all knights in shining armor on the side of good and right or whatever. They're such a shady organization, and it's super great that they're showing us that and not just going "oh, well, these people are the main characters, so they're totes good and only good. HEROES!!! etc.". The fact that they just left Miles with no way to get back to the US (no passport, no access to electronics, etc.) is not the kind of thing your average TV government organization would do if they're supposed to be the heroes; I like that they don't make a huge deal of how terribly they really screwed him up, but also how it's just there in the background, all "SHIELD makes terrible life choices sometimes, so maybe you shouldn't believe everything they say." I guess what I'm saying is that I love shades of grey, so I'm glad they haven't just made SHIELD black and white for a family audience.

The nod to that scene in Iron Man where Phil, Pepper, and the SHIELD extras break into the lab with that explosive device was perfect. That is how you do a motherfucking callback. I'm especially pleased because that's one of my favorite bits of IM (it's the scene where we first realize that mild-mannered, terrible suit-wearing Agent Coulson is actually a badass!), and I love that they had this shout-out for obsessive fans like me! :D

I like that Skye's reason for infiltrating SHIELD is something so normal. She wants to know who her parents were, and why they abandoned her (and why the information was all redacted--what does it mean?!?!), which is a nicely normal desire. I feel like too many fantastical plot elements would be overkill, so I like the average-personness of this.

Now, let's get to the real reason this show is so great.

Character Stuff (OMG TEEEEEAAAAAMMMMM, ILU <333333)

I am really loving the team development! I loooooved Ward and Skye being all bros and Skye kicking the crap out of him at Battleship, and May and Ward and their solidarity over drinks at the end, and every single thing about all the scenes between May and Coulson! I do feel like Fitz and Simmons didn't have much to do this week, since the show seems to still be at that place where they try to shoehorn every character into the plot and someone inevatibly gets shafted (*coughClint's12minutesofscreentimeintheAvengerscough*). Hopefully they're figure out a better balance soon, and go for some character-centric episodes, and give us more of an opportunity to show FitzSimmons and those skills that they were recruited for. They're super adorable and excited about absolutely everything, which I love, but now I want more character development, and more SCIENCE! and stuff. Also, I want to know something about them, other than that they're super smart, and that Fitz really wants a monkey lab assistant. :P

I don't know if they're going to continue in the possible-romance vein with the Ward-Skye relationship, but I just want them being bros and having a wonderful mentor/mentee relationship, so I hope it's more like this week in the future. The bit at the end of the episode where he told Skye she was on her own with Coulson, because he was "off duty" made me super sad, because Ward's supposed to be her SO, and he's supposed to have her back and be her support system as she learns the ropes, but instead he just leaves her to face the boss alone and TURNS HIS BACK ON HER AND ABANDONS HER AND ;ASLKDFJASD I CANNOT EVEN. Yes, she did betray all of them by keeping things from them, but it still broke my heart a little.

Melinda May continues to be great, and I still want to know more about her. She continues to be badass, but she has feelings and a past that isn't just terrible things causing her to leave fieldwork, and I love all those layers. <33333 There was almost enough Melinda in this episode. :D

Everything about all of the interaction between Phil and Melinda! I love that they clearly have a foundation of mutual respect, otherwise May would have never agreed to join the team in the beginning, but as we see in this episode, there's clearly a history between them as well. I need all of the flashbacks to "old times" ASAP. Also, a million words of Phil/Melinda, because when she offered to put down mats so they could "go a few rounds"? I wasn't thinking about sparring, ijs.

I know this isn't where they're going (because they're better than that, dammit!), but did anyone else have the idea that Phil and Melinda could be Skye's mysterious parents? They're the right age to have had a child super young and have to give her up because of SHIELD, and having badass SHIELD agent parents would totally be a reason for that file to be redacted. But I like the idea that she's somehow connected to someone with powers, or some shady organization, better, mostly because I feel like "random hacker chick who infiltrates Coulson's team just happens to be his long-lost daughter" is waaay too coincidental (though, still, I'd read 100,000 words of that fic). I feel like this is a half-second red herring, much like the Phil-is-an-LMD theory, which is too obvious, so it can't be true (DAMMIT).

As my tumblr tag suggests, Agent Coulson continues to be the best one. Also, how does he keep getting hotter to me every single week. The "stop talking" finger he gave Skye was just asldfjk;aslkfjasklfj and the Iron Man callback, and all of the scenes in the lab, and basically he is my favorite, though the rest of the team are growing on me more and more each week!

Phil's "and then I got stabbed" line, coupled with the reveal in an earlier episode that Phil is much softer than he used to be pre-Loki makes me think that he was way different than how fandom typically think he was. I need all of the flashbacks ASAP. I just want to know more about the ways in which he's changed (and not changed) since then!

The whole conversation about not being able to change people once they go bad, except how you can if you get to them early enough (or whatever, I don't have the episode in front of me to check for quotes) basically gave me all of the Clint (and Natasha) feels. He got to both of them early enough to be a positive influence on their lives, sob.

Also, brb sobbing over Phil and his disappointed face. ;_____; He went to bat for Skye and she disappointed him, and HOW DID SHE EVEN DEAL WITH BEING IN THE SAME ROOM WITH DISAPPOINTED!PHIL? D: D: I loved the confrontation between the two of them, because he seemed genuinely hurt that she lied to him, especially after he stuck his neck out for her in the pilot. I love the relationship they're building between the two of them, and hope they can eventually come back from Skye's lies coming out. ALSO, I MAY HAVE A HUGE THING FOR FOUND FAMILIES, AND THIS IS HITTING ALL OF THOSE BUTTONS.

And I'm sure there are other things that I liked or that I'm wondering about, but I need to watch the episode again to be able to articulate them. Obviously, I am loving this show, and I can't wait (the two entire weeks, sob sob stupid World Series!) until the next one!
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/123411.html?view=comments#comments
agents of s.h.i.e.l.d.","episode reviews
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/123296.html
Mon, 21 Oct 2013 18:32:24 GMT
What is this? class="repost">If you are going to do this, you need to do it before March 1st. It has been said that users will not be able to do anything about this after that date.

With reference to Google's policy changes and how everything you do with your Google account will be tied together into their super-cauldron of information, you will probably want to clear your Google Web History out - if you turned that feature on - before month's end. After that, you won't be able to clear it, and everything you search for will be connected with your account.

To check settings and/or clear out your Web History:

1. Go to Google. If you aren't signed in already, do so.
2. In the top right-hand corner you'll find your email address or name, perhaps an icon if you have a Plus account, and a little downward facing arrow. Click on the arrow and a menu will pop up.
3. Click to 'Account Settings'. This will take you to a page called 'Accounts'. (If you have a Plus account, you might go via a Plus sign-in page.)
4. Scroll down to a section called 'Services'. Here you'll find an option called 'View, enable, or disable web history', which has a link next to it. Click on the link.
5. If you never turned web history on, you'll get a page asking if you want to turn this service on. Just click 'No Thanks' and all is good. If you did turn it on, you should have a list of your searches. At the top there is a button that says 'Remove All History'. Click this and follow the instructions which will remove all items from your Web History and pause the feature so nothing else will be added in future.

Also, you can completely remove Web History as a service from your account by clicking THIS LINK, checking the tick-box and confirming you want to remove Web History. To be safe, it is probably best to do the steps above first to remove any history that might have already been collected.

Just keep in mind that the link in the previous paragraph won't work if you never had Web History enabled. You'll just get an error, invalid link message.

<lj-repost button="Share This Post">

Happy New Year, everyone! Or, well, Robin Hood if he charged the poor for the money he was going to give them.

And when she comes home with the "pizza" from Jubilee Pizza (loved seeing those boxes again!) we see that Gwen and her family are being watched. By who and for what reason we don't know, but the guy clearly can't be the sharpest tool in the shed if he doesn't realize that Jubilee Pizza is not good enough to warrant travelling all the way to Cardiff for takeout.

But then again, he has been retconned at least once before this episode, so who knows what his brain's looking like at this point. I love the scene where Gwen and Jack confront him. Gwen all "have you seen my keys", and Jack all "I will shoot you if you don't drink this bottle of water; hydration is important, you know". So great. And the whole "you've drunk it before", thing is utterly creepy. I think you forget how disturbing the idea of Retcon actually is, until you see it from the other side. I wonder if Jack ever told Esther that he used it on her?

Maybe it's one of the things that happened during the two months they spent together that we don't get to see. I like the idea of this jump in time, since they kind of need it when they're telling such a large-scale story, so that we can see the larger effects of the Miracle, but we lose out on a bunch of character stuff in that gap, the most obvious of those losses being the progression of the relationship between Jack and Esther from 4x08 to this episode. I love everything about their scenes together, and how they've clearly grown a lot closer to one another. I want all of the fic about Jack and Esther and what they were doing this whole time. Love them so much!

And Esther! She is so much more confident and competent, and it's really fantastic to see. A far cry from how she fell apart when she was driving Jack away from the mansion after being shot. Now she has herself together and is making excellent contributions to the team. Stop making me worry that we're going to lose her, writers! I really really want to keep her around.

I continue to love Rex, even though I know he's probably going to die in the next episode. I like the way he ties the CIA storyline into the Torchwood stuff, though, of course, I'd rather he be with the rest of Team Torchwood. He is better dressed when he's working for the CIA, though. That shade of purple is a very good look for him.

Rex is so cocky (as usual), with his "this is me you're talking to", but not without reason. A sixty year old murder weapon and DNA is pretty impressive. Too bad he trusted Charlotte to order the DNA test. Oh, Charlotte, I've liked you from your first appearance ("it's not Touch-wood, it's Torchwood"); why did you have to be one of the bad guys?! :(

I love the phone conversation towards the end of the episode with Rex at the CIA and the rest of Torchwood in Wales! It's going to be so sad if/when any of them dies, because I love their chemistry as a group. So snarky and bantery! :D

Shapiro continues to have the best lines. I can't say that I trust that he's 100% on the level, but I'm enjoying watching John de Lancie chew the hell out of the scenery. Again, I mourn the fact that they didn't introduce him sooner, because he should've been in way more episodes.

My last, random, CIA-storyline-related thought is that I really really want to read that pulp story, "The Devil Within". It would've been a great episode tie-in.

All of the scenes with the Cooper family are heartbreaking. Poor Mary and Gwen having to take care of Geraint and hide him like Ann Frank behind a panel in the cellar and live in constant fear. You can tell that they're both holding on to the hope that he'll get better with everything they've got, and the sad thing is that if the Miracle had never happened he would have died months ago. Now, instead of him dying from his heart attack, and them being able to mourn and move on, they're all suffering. On the one hand, having to turn him over to be sent to the ovens is awful, but on the other hand the suffering will finally end. I don't think it would have been easy at all to hand a parent over like that, but I also wouldn't want to have to linger horribly like that, causing my family so much pain. I'm impressed with how this storyline turned out. It's really adding some realism to what is a pretty ridiculous concept.

The policeman, whoever he is, is creepy. Why would anyone agree to do the job he has to do? Either his bosses threatened to fire him, someone has blackmail material on him, or he's just a terrible human being. I'm going to go with option three. He reminds me of the bad guy in Raiders of the Lost Ark whose face gets melted off. Mostly physically, but also with the same aura of creeperness. What a monster (ugh, "not as warm as he's going to be"?!). Poor Gwen and Mary. "I'm sorry for your loss" has never sounded so phony.

(As a side note, the Coopers totally live on the same street Donna's family lived on in "Turn Left"! Way to reuse a location, show. :D)

When Oswald finally shows up, he gets to be even creepier with a baby than the last time he had a scene with one. Tasting the food off of Anwen's face? *shudder* I don't blame Gwen for wanting to beat him to death with that pot (love that she dried it first!). I wanted to smack him around a bunch for going the whole "I'm going to build some dramatic tension with everything I say, even when it turns out to not be a big deal" route. I appreciated that Torchwood was all lolno when he mentioned having Jilly's laptop. They stole those files ages ago, dude. And Esther after the Harry Bosco reveal was utterly fantastic. Both the writing and the acting in that scene made what could have been a really boring exposition dump interesting and intriguing. And the payoff with the Chinese guy who said the Blessing saved his life was really well done.

It's so cute how Oswald refers to Jilly as his "assistant". She was never his assistant. First she was his agent, but once he started working for PhiCorp, she was more like his handler. Yet another instance of Oswald thinking he's more important than he is. He thinks his information for Jack is so important that no one can touch him, and it doesn't turn out to be that big of a deal. It's helpful, yes, but not the big revelation he was hoping for. He also calls himself the most recognizable face in the world, which I can't imagine is true. What he did was horrible, and the fact that he survived lethal injection was amazing at the time, but people are so over the whole "didn't die" thing, and Oswald's fifteen minutes of fame have been over for ages. If he was in America, it would be a different story, I think, but I wouldn't be surprised if not many people outside the country recognized him.

I appreciated the exchange between him and Gwen where she tells him about her work as a policewoman and having worked with pedophiles before. Because Gwen gets it, gets what Oswald is all about. She understands him far better than Jack ever did, and she won't underestimate him (hopefully).

I do wonder why Jack listened to him when he said Jack shouldn't turn him in because then the police would start to wonder who Jack is. Why would the police care who Jack is? No one cares who Jack is. Or, I mean he's not wanted for murder at any rate.

I have to say that with Oswald's addition to the scenes with the Torchwood team, I'm finally interested in his story again. I'm really interested to see what his part in the end game will be, and how he'll react to the Blessing. I've been assuming he'll die once things are put right, simply because of the way he was reacting after his lethal injection, but he seems to have gotten a bit better (or is better at hiding it, at least), so that alone may not kill him. I'm predicting that he won't make it through tomorrow's episode, though, however his end eventually comes about.

And Jilly's got a one-way ticket to Shanghai. Why do I think that means she won't make it out of this alive, either? The Families need her to "write history", which presumably involves the Harry Bosco-ing she's doing, but what else does it mean? And the Blessing tells her that she's "right" about something, but what? I'm hoping that her storyline resolves itself well, because there are a lot of questions. Chief among them is where does she get all of those fantastic coats, and do they make them in my size?

Finally I'll touch briefly on <strike>Earth's vagina</strike> the Blessing. Seriously the most bizarre-looking thing, ever. And we still have no clue what it is, only that it makes you uncomfortable once you get close to it, and that the Families think that that's "the Blessing's attempt to communicate." I don't think I would want to communicate with something that makes me feel like that, I'm just saying. Or something that either kills people (according to both Frances Fisher and the random glasses-wearing representative of the Families that Jilly meets when she arrives in Shanghai), or saves their lives (according to the Chinese guy in the video Jilly mistranslated). We already saw it cause someone's death (the Asian guy in 4x06), so whose life will we see it save? Please say it's Jack's, because if he ends this series dead, I will not be pleased (to say the least).

But shit's about to get real now, with all of the major players either in Buenos Aires or Shanghai. Both Jack and Rex are having more trouble with their injuries since they arrived, and Jack's blood is literally drawn to the Blessing, both the blood inside his body in Shanghai, and that in the blood bags in Buenos Aires. What is going on?!

I have no idea, and I cannot wait to find out! I can't believe it's already almost here!
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/121257.html?view=comments#comments
episode reactions","torchwood
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/120848.html
Sat, 27 Aug 2011 22:42:58 GMT
"They're keeping it quiet in case there's an outbreak of spontaneous joy. So unsurprised that he rocked the terrible 70s 'stache.

Also also, how great was Rex with the contact lenses?! So great! :D I loved Gwen's reaction, all checking her pockets like "how did he steal them from me?". And his whole improvised plan was really competently executed. Rex continues to be great at his job, despite his insistence on rejoining with the CIA, instead of just admitting he's totally Torchwood now. I did like that he worked to get Jack and Esther away from the house, and was more than willing to lie to protect them in the end. I'm constantly terrified that he's going to die for real (especially during his confrontation with Friedkin, who I was sure was going to shoot him), and if he does I will be super sad, because I really like him, doucheyness included. I could totally do without the random bits of homophobia (although A++ to Gwen for telling him to go back to his cave, lol), but otherwise I really enjoy him as a character. Don't die, Rex!

Poor Esther; that conversation with her sister was so sad and hard to listen to. I hope someone at the hospital she's in is aware that she basically volunteered her children to be killed and does something about it. In retrospect, it's a really good thing that Esther called social services, because I don't want to think about what might have happened if her sister had stayed in that house with those kids. But what a thing to deal with on top of all the other shit that's going on! She handled herself quite well, though, and I really loved that little exchange she had with Shapiro. My reaction to that pretty much went like this:

Shapiro: "Time out, I think, Drummond."
Esther: "No sir, not at all. We need to find out how that man died and fix this stinking world...thank you, sir."
Me: ♥___♥

Okay, so this may be an unpopular opinion, but I really wasn't crazy about the Ianto mention in this episode. I liked the first one, in 4x03, because Gwen bringing it up felt much more natural. It makes complete sense that she'd want to talk about his death and the aftermath of CoE with Jack, and there he was being emotionally open (and yeah, drunk, but still) so it was logical for her to bring it up at that point. And it would have been much more natural and not felt totally shoehorned in like it did in this episode if it'd been brought up last week. In fact, I kept waiting for them to mention him (or Tosh or Owen), but it just ended up being a "whenever somebody died" generalization. Not to say I didn't love that scene, because I did, but it would have worked a lot better from a story perspective to bring up Ianto when they're having their big discussion about losing people and survivor's guilt and the like.

Someone in chat made this point last night (I can't remember who, but you are totally smart, whoever you are!), but having the mention here makes it look like every time Jack sleeps with a man (or there are relationship things being talked about), they have to bring up Ianto. Like, "remember that time Jack slept with this other guy?" or something. I don't know. I was looking forward to old team members being mentioned this season (and where is my freaking Tosh mention, writers?!), but aside from the absolutely perfect Owen mention in 4x01, it really hasn't met my expectations. Not like that's a huge thing to complain about, because I'm generally thrilled with the overall storyline, but still.

Gwen and her GQMF mother!!! I just rewatched "Something Borrowed" the other day, and so I was totally expecting Gwen's mom to blame her for everything that was happening (like, "you tell her how horrible things are here, so she should STFU and stop complaining" or whatever), but instead it's all "don't give up, go get the bastards whatever it takes". And then when Rhys is all "tell her yourself", it's "no. I'm watching TV."! I love her kind of a lot, you guys! And Rhys, keeping his and Gwen's spirits up even in this totally dire situation. I am so glad he's mellowed considerably after the way he was behaving in 4x01 (let us never speak of that hospital scene again). I hope we get more of both of them in the next two episodes.

Also, I'm really glad they mentioned Gwen's dad again, because I was a bit concerned when there was no mention at all of him last week. I have a feeling he's probably going to die and the end of the series, but I could be wrong. At least he won't die in the overflow camp, though. That's something.

John Fucking DeLancie as Director Shapiro. God damn, he was fantastic! Such a dick! :D I loved basically everything about everything he was doing in every scene. Especially loved his little monologue about how cancer cells are basically mortal and we can smoke our way into the next Great Depression. His line delivery throughout was consistently fantastic, and I'll be interested to see how he fits into the last two episodes. I thought his voice was the one we heard in the car before Ellis Hartley-Monroe was crushed into a cube, so there's a good chance he might be in on it, but I'm totally willing to be wrong. Either way, this was a brilliant casting choice!

I liked the reintegration of the Oswald and Jilly storyline. I continue to love Jilly, and was genuinely worried for her when Oswald started to get really angry. Actually, I started to worry when he asked for a redheaded prostitute, because I could just envision him making this unknown girl a Category One as a warning to Jilly or something equally horrible. I don't buy his "I just want human connection" shtick for a second. I think he was hoping the girl would go along with it and gossip about the fact that they'd just had a date, which would have been good for his image (women are safe alone with him! &c). Love the idea that there's now a movement to create a Category Zero, but I can't help but believing it would go terribly in practice. How do they actually determine Cat 0? Oswald is an obvious one, but without more information on the actual proposed criteria, I ultimately come down on the side of bad idea. Just lock him up again and wait for someone to fix the miracle, guys. Then you can kill him for real.

But back to Jilly. She continues to be super competent and awesome, and I'm prepared to like her even more for the rest of the season now that she's gotten away from Oswald. I really liked Shawnie Yamaguchi (and is it just me, or did anyone else think for a second that she was totally going to hit on Jilly?), and was equal parts shocked, saddened, and irritated (way to kill another Asian character, writers) when she got shot. And now Jilly has joined the Families. I wonder what this means for her. Right now it looks like she's just another pawn in their complex game, but anything could happen in the next two episodes. And wow at the reveal that Charlotte is an inside man for the Families as well! I never expected to see her again, let alone that she would become significant to the plot!

I love not knowing how this is all going to shake out. Despite the fact that there have been some moments that've dragged a bit, I've been thoroughly entertained for the past eight weeks. I can't really comment yet on whether or not they could have told this story in less than ten episodes, because we don't know what will become important in the last two episodes. It's kind of like complaining about the pacing during the last third of a movie. I'm going to just sit back and enjoy the rest of the ride.

Ooh, and now the rain's really coming down! Anyone else who is/was in the path of Hurricane Irene, stay safe and as dry as possible!
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/120848.html?view=comments#comments
episode reactions","torchwood
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/120667.html
Mon, 22 Aug 2011 05:12:37 GMT
"You're Welsh. :D I also like how he called Jack out on his tendency to turn serious or special moments into a joke (although you can't tell me you weren't thinking the same thing re: Angelo and his teacher). Sometimes, that's okay, but it's kind of an awkward thing to do with someone you've just met.

I don't want to be that guy who sits here and compares this relationship to Jack's past (or, well, future) relationships in crazy minute detail (or at least I don't right now, lol), so I'll just say that it was lovely to see Jack in a place where he's willing and able to be so open about himself and his past. Obviously he's not going to bust out with everything, because that would be OOC, but he's not constantly deflecting questions or avoiding giving real answers to them. Which makes everything that comes after that much more heartbreaking, because this is clearly the beginning of the end of that. Clearly the moral of this relationship for Jack is that he'd better not trust people anymore, because they will eventually betray him if he does.

I think the religious stuff was done pretty well. The Christ imagery was kind of heavy-handed (the mobster calling Angelo Jack's "acolyte", Angelo piercing Jack's side with the knife, cleaning the blood from Jack's feet), but I loved the scene in the church, and the conversation about the wedding and how Angelo feels that god doesn't hear him. The conversation about their relationship in the context of Angelo's faith was kind of hit and miss for me. I like the idea of it, but again, I feel like the execution was a bit heavy-handed. I did love Angelo's comment about how he thinks that if god is love, maybe god loves him, too. Also, the entirety of the scene in the confessional was great. The "700 years since my last confession" thing had to be a reference to some job he had as a Time Agent, which only makes me want more backstory.

The whole proceeding section with Jack and Angelo getting kidnapped from their room and the conversation with the mobsters outside of that warehouse felt straight out of a noir film. And when they broke into the refrigerated room, it suddenly became a noir film with aliens! I wonder how Torchwood knew about this alien? I think I will handwave it with my typical this-random-TW-plotpoint-doesn't-make-sense explanation of "alien tech!". Clearly 1920s Torchwood has some tech that allowed them to learn about the possible break in the timeline, or they communicated with someone who told them. Or something. Whatever, it didn't reduce my enjoyment of these scenes in the least, and the idea of the way in which this one little thing would change the timeline is super creepy. Also, yay, an alien, finally! And double yay at the mention of the Trickster's Brigade! I love all of the Whoniverse references in this episode. Also loling forever at the "it tastes like oysters" "you did not" "I had to be polite" exchange.

Another DW reference I loved was Jack telling Angelo about his friend called the Doctor, and that travelling with a companion always seemed nice. Jack is still so torn up about the Doctor and the fact that the Doctor left and Jack has to wait so long for him, but he can't help referring to him as a friend. I don't really think Jack ever stops thinking of the Doctor as a friend, but it's a far cry from the oblique way he references him in S1 and S2. Also, "here's one of the secrets...run"? Loved that. Because the first and most important thing you learn when travelling with the Doctor is to run.

I can't remember where I saw this brought up (maybe the gleeclub chat post episode?), but someone suggested that Angelo was a plant, and that everything about their encounters was him getting close to Jack for some nefarious purpose. Which I can see, but if Angelo is a plant, he didn't know about Jack's immortality. Because there's no way he could've faked that shock. Also, if he was a plant, then that just made everything about this storyline about 1000x more heartbreaking. Because it's clear that Jack's relationship with Angelo is one of the major things (along with all of that time spent waiting for the Doctor) that made Jack into the closed-off person we see at the beginning of series one. During the "Fragments" flashbacks, we have a Jack who gets drunk and tells random strangers how great the Doctor is, and how the Doctor is going to come fix him. A Jack who is also shocked and horrified by Torchwood just killing that blowfish, even though he hadn't done anything wrong. He's much more open and less cynical than 2006!Jack, and the Jack in these flashbacks is pretty clearly just Fragments!Jack 28 years later. Jack is still at a point in his life where he's willing to open up to someone he cares about (maybe even loves), to tell his secrets to without hesitation. And Angelo's betrayal fucked Jack up royally.

The scene outside the prison. I don't know that I can buy that Jack ever really felt as though his immortality was "the best secret of all", but it's not as though every word out of his mouth is 100% truth or anything. What really kills me about that scene is when he tells Angelo that he came back for him, and that he's never done that before. Ugh, just. "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" references aside, this broke my heart, because it seems to me as though this may be the first and last time he ever did that (came back for someone), at least until he did it at the beginning of series two. Like I said, this relationship really fucked him up, if it takes him eighty years to get close to people and reveal things about his past again.

And then once we get back to the room over the butcher's shop, that's where things start to go so very very wrong. They start off well enough, but Angelo just can't deal with the whole Jack-was-dead-now-he's-not thing, and it goes bad really fast. This scene is really horrifying. It brought to mind all of the terrible shit Jack must've gone through at the Master's hands during the Year That Never Was (and damn, he must've had some flashbacks to this during that year). Only this is worse, because you expect the Master to be a sick sadistic bastard, and these are just regular people. Regular people, many of whom who are torturing another human being because they want to see the miracle of him reviving. Ugh, how fucking disgusting. And Jack begs Angelo to stop this, but Angelo does nothing, doesn't even attempt to help. Probably he's afraid the mob will turn on him, too, but it's pretty awful, whatever the case.

Then the three mysterious men show up. I wonder who they are. Aside from obviously being the ones (or precursors to the ones) who are behind Miracle Day. And being the people who started the Triangle Logo group. There are three of them, a triangle has three sides, and also their hands form a triangle when they make their agreement to buy Jack. Way to be original, boys. What I want to know, though, is, aside from what they were going to do (or even did) with him, how did they find out about him? Was he down in that room long enough that he became a whispered rumor in the area? Or did someone else in the mob work for them? I hope this is something we actually find out.

When it's finally over, and Angelo frees Jack so they can escape, Jack is so broken down it just breaks my heart. He assumes Angelo's going to take his vortex manipulator, too, the only other thing he has left. This is one of the few times we've really seen Jack so open in his hopelessness. He's usually the first person to deflect whatever terrible things are happening to him with a joke and a fake smirk; maybe that's another result of what happened to him here.

And now Jack leaves, because that's what he does best. I've already touched on the "fixed point" thing, so my major comment here is that I can't imagine this going any other way. It would be one thing if Angelo hadn't just stood by and watched Jack get tortured for hours on end, but when he allows that to happen and thinks Jack's just going to go back to the way things were? Not a chance.

As Jack says, "It always ends the same way. You kill me. Men like you, you kill me.", like it's something he forgot he should be used to. He's not going to forget again. :(

And that's why I can't see this as happening at any time except on the slow path. This is such a huge betrayal; it's not as though no one has ever killed Jack on purpose before (c.f. Victorian Torchwood), but it's never been someone he loved and told his secrets to. He hasn't had someone he loved and trusted stand by and watch other people torture him without attempting to stop it, before. The idea that this would fuck him up enough to make him close himself off from the possibility of an open and honest relationship is not at all a ridiculous one. That it would take a lifetime for him to be honest about his past with people he loves after being betrayed like this is not at all surprising. :((((

Jack and Gwen
I've been waiting for these scenes for what feels like ages. People kept giving interviews and saying that there was an episode where Gwen and Jack would finally have it out, and talking about a conversation they'd have in a car, and when I found out they were combining this (this thing that I've wanted since the season started) with the flashbacks episode, I was super excited. All of the things I want, all at once! And it did not disappoint.

I loved everything about all of the scenes between the two of them, especially The Conversation (as it were). Gwen with her survivor's guilt, which was perfectly done; she feels horribly guilty for those thoughts, but that doesn't stop her from having them. And even after all of the terrible things that happened to her, and to people that she loved, she still loved being a part of Torchwood and doing something that was so important. It's not until she has a child to worry about that things change. I think if it was still her and Rhys, she wouldn't have ever stopped fighting, and probably would have tried her hardest to rebuild Torchwood. That's just who Gwen is.

I love the way in which this is shot, and how like a confessional the car seems, with Gwen in the front and Jack in the back, and the only way they can see each other is a little bit in the rear view mirror. And Gwen is most certainly making a confession to Jack, unburdening her soul to him as she drives him through the night to what might be his final death.

And Jack can finally say that he wants to live, that he'll let Gwen take that from him over his dead body (so to speak). Such a long time coming. The way he's always (or at least since his time with the Doctor) been willing to throw his life away to save other people has always broken my heart. As though because he can't die that means his life is somehow worth less than someone else's. Even after he became mortal again, I don't think that really changed. But something is finally different for him since the beginning of the season, and he's finally at a place where he can say, "I don't want to die". Just ♥♥♥ forever, basically.

And even with all of the shit that they've been through, all that Gwen blames Jack for, all of her guilt in relation to Torchwood, they still love each other. Ugh, I love them so much! And their brohug after the bad guys have been subdued! Just perfect. ♥

I was giving Gwen the side eye a bit for being so angry at Jack for not knowing her mom's name, though. I have plenty of friends whose parents' first names I don't know. And these would be parents I've met more than once. As far as we know, Jack interacted with Gwen's mother at her wedding, and that was it. And considering that a) it was a long time ago, and b) even if Gwen talked about her parents all of the time she wouldn't refer to them by their first names, I think Jack can be forgiven for not knowing Mary's first name. Now if he'd forgotten Rhys's name (or if Rhys had forgotten Mary's name) it would be a different thing entirely.

I loved how smart the grammar discussion was. Really great attempt to actually figure things out with the tiny bit of information they might have. "They could be from back east" was clearly written by a west coaster, though, as we totally don't say that on this coast, and I don't think anyone not from the west coast would refer to it as back east.

I really thought Jack was going to bust out with "we're related" during the conversation about how they could use his wriststrap to find Anwen. I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't go there, tbh. Jack could totally be Gwen's ancestor (or vice versa, considering he won't actually be born for ~3,000 years)! I guess since it was really just a throwaway attempt to get Gwen to let him go, it wasn't going to go anywhere, but it got me really excited for a minute.

Jack's story about the most beautiful thing he's ever seen in the universe was really fantastic. The whole thing about the afterimage the firebird leaves behind on the inside of your eyelids lasting longer than the creature itself does felt sort of like a metaphor for Jack and the people he's had in his life. Those people, the people he loves, only live for a short time (compared to him, anyway), but their memory will live on with him for a lot longer than they ever could on their own. Even if that wasn't the intention, it was a really nice parallel.

Esther and Rex
It was really nice to see that Vera's death actually meant something. While it didn't get the camps shut down, people know about it (5 million hits on pseudo-YouTube), and are honoring her with memorial services and everything. Rex is clearly upset over it, but he continues to be terrible with emotions and brushes off Esther's concern with "I didn't know her", etc. You may not have really known her, Rex, but you obviously felt something for her. It's not going to kill you to admit that, bro.

Esther's suitably awkward reaction was really great, too. She barely knew Vera either, but she has feelings for Rex and doesn't want him to be sad, so she tries to be all supportive, but it doesn't work out very well for her. Thankfully Gwen interrupts their conversation like a crazyface looking for Jack, or I fear things would have started to get too awkward for words.

Awkwardness aside, Esther and Rex were absolutely amazing this week. Coming out of nowhere to save Jack and Gwen like a boss! Then bringing in the police to save Gwen's family! That's my team! ♥ And when they show up on the scene there are hugs all around. Gwen throwing herself on Rex kissing him on the cheek was beautiful. He looked so disgruntled! First he has to deal with the rest of Torchwood behaving like amateur clowns (lolol), and now he has a crazy lady hugging him! His life is so hard.

These scenes, almost more than anything in recent episodes, really cemented my desire for Rex and Esther to survive so they can come back next season. I've loved seeing them grow over the season, and I really love both of them, and will be really sad if we have to lose either one of them. Keeping my fingers crossed for their continued survival.

Random Other Stuff

I liked the mention of Oswald Danes that Gwen overhears on the car radio right before Jack comes to. Nice way to keep the Oswald storyline around and moving forward while he's off-screen. And trying to shoehorn him into this episode in another way would have just been too much. Hopefully they'll bring that storyline back in next week, though, because it's been two weeks without any real progress there. Not that it's my favorite storyline or anything, but still.

Loved the Andy cameo. That look on his face for a second when he says he's never shot anybody before. :( So many people this season doing things like this that they've never done before, all because of how fucked up the world has gotten. It's not just members of Torchwood who end up doing terrible things, it's people on the sidelines (Rhys transporting bodies to the modules, Andy killing this kidnapper) who've somehow gotten through all of the previous seasons unscathed. No one is safe anymore.

That being said, I loved the little exchange between Andy and Gwen's mom. She's all "it's about time", and he goes off on one of his spiels. Too precious! There so needs to be more scenes with the Wales contingent, because they are all amazing!

I love how many awesome genre actors have been on the show this season. And we'll be getting another great one next week with the appearance of John de Lancie (yay!).

Angelo knows how the miracle began. But that implies he isn't the cause, which is sort of what I'd been thinking before this week's episode. So, who is? Those three men, presumably, or their descendants, or other members of the secret-organization-with-the-terrible-logo they started. But why? And how? And why is Jack mortal now if it had to do with Jack's blood (presumably). All of the questions. It really needs to be next week now, I'm just saying.

I've got another post in-progress that I'll make in the next couple of days, about what I did on Saturday, but it's way past time for me to go to sleep. No, you know what, that's not true. I totally had the time to, I just didn't really have the will to. It was a pretty horrifying episode and I probably won't watch it again until I rewatch the entirety of series four.

But this week's will definitely be getting rewatched. There was so much going on here that I have kind of half-formed thoughts about, so I need a rewatch to really get things fully crystallized in my mind. Thoughts I did have:

I loved the cold open with Ernie Hudson(!) and the guy in Shanghai. That little hint on the TV about the 45 Club, which gets played out to great effect with his leap from the top of that building. I love the creepiness of the notion that there is something so horrible in PhiCorp's parcel of land in Shanghai that someone would rather kill themselves than continue to know about it.

That, coupled with Ernie Hudson's comments to Jack about how PhiCorp's not controlling the miracle, and that it's way beyond them is making me think we're finally going to get aliens! Just the wording of a lot of his dialogue in that scene, implied something beyond their/our world (or perhaps outright stated it, I can't remember). Regardless of what it means, the implication made me squeal and clap my hands. Aliens! :D

And I wonder what The Blessing is. Eternal life, or something more sinister? I did have to LOL at the end of the episode after Jack mentioned that they needed to find out what The Blessing was, and it cut to the monitors, where there was a search running for "THE TRUTH". It must be out there somewhere.

I loved the conversations everyone had with their respective middlemen. The doctor in Wales knows what the modules are for, but because she doesn't have to pull the switch herself, she can continue to do her job with pretty much no problem. Maloney is a horrible little man who can't think for himself, to do anything except try to cover up the horrors he's committed. He acts like he has all of the power, but he's kidding himself. Ernie Hudson wants to know what's going on and maybe help to fix things, but he, like everyone else, is stuck in the middle of things he has no real control over. This is why we need Torchwood: because they can sneak in when everyone's "just doing their job" and get the real work done. And do they ever do that this week.

I love that they don't seem to be making Vera's death about Rex's manpain. I had my suspicions that it wouldn't be with the way it was staged last week, and I'm so happy to be proven right. I mean, he had his moments of being sad, but someone he likes a lot just died, so it's understandable. Instead of angsting all over the place, he got shit done so that Vera's death meant something. The Overflow Camps are now exposed. The government jumps to defend them, of course, but hopefully this will have some good results in the long run.

And I love how last week Rex was all "Torchwood is just a name", and now he's fully a part of it. Telling people he's Torchwood, telling Esther that things aren't over for Torchwood. He's Torchwood's number one fan.

Oh, poor Esther; she's in so far over her head. Using her own name for undercover work?! Seriously, dude, what were you thinking? She was clearly terrified every step of the way, but she managed admirably well for her first not-in-the-van mission. Although, she fell into the trap that everyone seems to fall into in TV and movies: when you strangle someone, it's really hard to do it until they die, and not just until they pass out. Especially, since it seems like most people will stop strangling when the victim loses consciousness. I knew he wasn't dead (or Category 1, whatever), and Esther could have saved herself a lot of angst if she'd figured that out. But I love that Esther is the one who came through and saved Rex, when Rex was in such a vulnerable position. Lovely role-reversal, there.

I loved the scene between Esther and Rex in the car at the end. Rex was much more sensitive to Esther in general, and they had a lovely bonding moment, thankfully free of pining on Esther's part. I did want to shout at her not to fall for him any more than she already has, but I feel like that would be pretty useless. He's so going to break her heart.

Sad that Jack did almost nothing in this episode. He had a few conversations with people (and an amazing moment with the host at the restaurant! everyone loves the coat), but most of the screen time was taken up by others. I guess they're saving all of the Jack stuff for next week. On the one hand, yay more Jack next week, but on the other hand I wanted more Jack this week! He and Gwen did have that oh-the-contact-lenses-have-another-feature conversation that was pretty great, but nothing meaty enough.

Gwen continues to be utterly badass, though, just blowing up shit as cool as you please. Although, that's quite enough complaining about Rhys being late, missy. Seriously, I think she's done that in every episode they've shared scenes in. I did keep yelling for Rhys to just drive away, though. Not like random-bureaucrat-with-a-phone was going to stop a giant truck with his body or anything. But he figured it out in the end, and got Gwen's father out like a boss. Only to get captured by the bad guys, but still.

Eep, the low-res-triangle-logo guys have Gwen's family! And they want Jack. Dun dun dunnnnnn. But seriously, what a way to end the episode. And next week's looks to be the one where all of the things (flashbacks, Jack and Gwen's heart-to-heart in the car) happen.

And that's about it, guys! I kept scoffing at the idea that they'd be able to successfully top the horror of Children of Earth, but with this episode, they've already done it for me. And there are still five more episodes. How fucking dark is this going to get? Where the fuck do we go from something that's basically a concentration camp?!

I loved the variety of interaction between the characters this week: Jack and Esther, Gwen finally seeing her family again (Anwen continues to be the cutest baby, even in that silly pink headband), Jack and Oswald, Vera and Torchwood. The entire first half of the episode was ♥♥♥! I'll admit, my thoughts on that stuff are kind of overshadowed by the level of WTF (good WTF, as opposed to "ugh, this was stupid and terrible" WTF) I'm feeling about the last ten minutes right now, so I might have more to say about the earlier scenes when I re-watch.

Jilly and Oswald were fantastic this week. She so doesn't give two shits about him, just as long as he delivers the message. He is basically an unruly client who thinks he knows best and doesn't want to do what the PR professional (and his bosses) tells him to do. And that moment when he decided to go off book and give that crazy speech about how we're all angels now? I like how they tried to make it seem as though he could go either way, but it was really clear to me that Oswald's only out for one thing: himself. He doesn't care at all about the human race, about making things right again, he just wants to go where the action is.

Jack could not be more wrong about Oswald's motivation. He doesn't want to die; he wants to kill again. And that's the only reason he'd even consider helping Jack. But he probably figures that if the Miracle is reversed, he'll end up dead, so no joy there. I think Jack is reading his own feelings about killing a child into Oswald's actions. He can't understand the mindset of someone who would do what Oswald did and revel in it, because Steven's death destroyed him. The idea that someone wouldn't feel that way is just not even on Jack's radar.

I really feel for Gwen, here. She wants so much to protect her dad, but everything she tried just put him in danger. Too bad the Torchwood name doesn't hold any sway anymore, because you could just tell she wanted to tell that military guy that Torchwood needed a patient removed. In the past, that would have worked, too. At least she and Rhys were able to get into the overflow camp and find out what's really going on. Now we'll see if they can do anything about it.

Rex and Esther were great with their plan to get Rex into the camp (lololol at Jack's "boyfriend" comment; nice trolling there, Harkness) and then into the module to investigate. I hope they got some great footage that they can do some real damage with. These bastards deserve the worst possible punishment for this. And even though I said in my last review that I want aliens to be involved, I'd almost love it more if humans were the ones in ultimate control. No one does worse things to us than we do. History is proof enough of that.

And Vera. Damn, she was fierce. So horrified at the conditions of the camp and the treatment the "patients" were getting, that she confronted that guy (ugh, what a creeper! I need a shower after his scenes) without any thought for her own safety. And what really makes it terrible is that those gunshots were totally treatable. She wasn't bleeding enough (or unconscious enough) to have severed an artery, and they were in locations that she would have recovered from without too much trouble. I'm not medically inclined, but I do watch a lot of TV/movies where people get shot, and mortal wounds on TV tend to bleed much more than that. So she would have been fine. D:

I am really going to miss her.

So, aliens using humans, or humans using aliens, or aliens in league with humans. Whatever the case may be, there had better be some alien-related stuff that isn't the Torchwood software or those contact lenses. I'm just saying.

The man with the blue eyes who stopped Jilly to talk to her backstage before Oswald's speech. I think he's the one behind this. And I'm firmly willing to eat my words, but it was a total gut reaction. If he's not behind it, he's certainly right at the top.

In conclusion, damn, Jane Espenson! Write for all of my shows, for real!

And I'm sure there are other things I want to talk about, but this window has been open for the last 45 minutes with nothing more added, so I'll stop and see if LJ will let me post this. And then to bed!
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/120065.html?view=comments#comments
episode reactions","torchwood
So this has been the busiest week ever. Monday through Wednesday was eight hours of work each day, come home, then solid non-work-related work until bed, with only a break for dinner. Yesterday, I attempted to catch up on the many tabs I have open (still so many, OMG), and will probably be doing that tomorrow as well.

And since this is the only thing I seem to post about lately (what, I'm behind on pretty much every other show I watch in the summer!), I wanted to talk about last week's Torchwood for a second. I'd planned to make this post last weekend, but since I'm not used to this new sleep schedule yet, I ended up mostly sleeping the weekend away. :\\ Hopefully that won't happen this weekend, since I have all of the things to do.

But anyway, a few thoughts on last week's episode, before tonight's airs:

Episode 4x04: Escape to L.A.

The short version is that Esther is an idiot, Rex is a douche, Gwen should never ever ever do an American accent ever again, and Jack looks hot in that delivery uniform (green is so his color).

The less short version:

I feel for Esther, I really do, with the situation with her sister, but wow her behavior was dumb. She's apparently never seen a spy movie or anything else where people are on the run and the bad guys who are looking for them stake out their friends/relatives. No sympathy for that dumb behavior. Although Gwen wasn't any better, considering she completely missed the guy in all black with the giant telephoto lens taking photos of her from the beach. Maybe she thought he was a paparazzo? Regardless, everyone's distracted by something, and it's not good for their success.

Also, what did Esther think was going to happen when child protective services saw that house? Rex was right to call her on this, even though he could have been a bit less horrible about it (no he couldn't, really, it's Rex).

Both she and Rex have got it rough, what with family situations that would be pretty sucky on their own, but are just compounded and made worse by the whole miracle thing. I do feel bad for both of them. Rex's confrontation with his father was heart-wrenching. It doesn't excuse the douche-itude, but it goes a long way to explaining some of his behavior. I hope they explore the family angle with the two of them some more, especially since family seems to be a pretty big theme this season (Gwen's dad, Rhys and Anwen, etc.).

I loved the burly landlord and his cafe that makes a great "guava jalapeño cheese tart." So California! Also, I want to try that; it sounds amazing. And LOLOL at Gwen and Rhys's first phone conversation! Love them so so much. "Is that a seagull?" "No it's a mad woman on a rampage." Everything about the scenes by the beach (both outside and in their safe house) was just perfect.

And Rhys and the baby! ♥♥♥♥♥

Everything about the hospital scenes was just awful, from the conditions, to the woman abandoning her elderly father, but especially Oswald Danes and the tiny child. So horrible, and so well done. Bill Pullman is so good at these grandiose speeches. I kept wanting him to tell the other zombies (well, they kind of are) that today was their independence day. His performance just gets better and better every week. I also liked that bit of business in the hotel room when he opened all of the seltzer water bottles in the mini bar, and how pleased he was by it. And by the thermostat and the great mattress. There's more than one reason he's glad to be out of prison.

I like that although she's in deep on the bad side, Jilly is only working with Oswald to suit herself (or for some nefarious PhiCorp-related purposes), not because she feels anything but loathing for him. Also, she is so freaking adorable!

The Oswald Danes/Ellis Hartley Monroe rivalry was played so fantastically. What a horrible woman. Not that she's even close to as bad as he is, but she's so awful because she's so realistic. There are a ton of people just like her trying to ruin our country right now. The monsters aren't all larger than life or not of this earth (there had better be aliens at some point, or I'm going to be so annoyed). All of the segregating the dead and living was interesting (for all of the parallels to various RL events in history), and I really liked the irony of her assuming the dead would all die and go to heaven (or wherever) when the world is reverted back to normal when we know there's nothing after death in this universe.

The way her storyline ended(?) was pretty much perfect. Loved her being crushed by the car! So hilarious and gruesome at the same time.

C. Thomas Howell! I think I'm the only person who's never seen The Outsiders, but I've seen him in a bunch of stuff. Although, it's been about 15 years, so I totally didn't recognize him at all. But on rewatching, IDK how I didn't, because it was obviously him. Just wasn't expecting to see him so soon, I guess. He was so great, though, and I'm sad his character is probably out of the picture.

Poor Nicholas Frumkin! It's not going to be fun for him surviving without one of his eyes and part of his hand. Yuck.

Loved how badass team Torchwood continues to be. Gwen and Jack getting Frumkin's info (A++ Doctor Who reference there with Jack's alias being John Smith), getting into the server room (wow, Gwen's outfit, rawr), and Rex running up 66 flights of stairs with a bad heart and a hole in his chest. Terrible timing, though, bro. But the show would have been a lot shorter if the hit man had revealed who he was working for. I find it really interesting that the hit man's questions for Jack seem to indicate that whoever he works for doesn't understand or know why Jack's still alive. So what do they want with him, then?

Also, specific geography?

I am starting to have a theory about who's behind all this and why, but I want to watch tonight's episode, which starts too soon for me to try and write this out I'm a way that makes sense. So, after episode five, probably. Although the hit man and the voice in the car made me think The Silence, but that would be the strangest Doctor Who crossover, ever.

Next episode it looks like Rhys (and Andy?) might start to get involved with the bigger picture with Gwen's dad being put in an overflow camp. If so, yay, because I miss them.

Overall, this was a great episode. The plot is really starting to move along, and I can't wait to see where it goes next.

Whew, made it with seconds to spare!
https://chaneen.livejournal.com/119998.html?view=comments#comments
episode reactions","torchwood","life
I watched the Torchwood Comic Con panel earlier (Starz was kind enough to upload it to youtube). There are some super vague spoilers (pretty much boiling down to "we're going to focus on this character/this relationship in episode X"), but I'm generally a spoilerphobe and they didn't bother me. Mostly it's just the cast being super precious with one another. I think the new cast members fit in well with the John and Eve dynamic, and I pretty much just want to draw hearts around all of them. Basically, Eve Myles, marry me!

The audience Q&A portion wasn't even that motts-y, maybe because you can't see the people asking the questions, IDK. It definitely helped that the moderator was the one to ask the inevitable Ianto question (ugh). The fan questions mostly just led to some charming and hilarious stories, so I consider it a win. If you want to watch it, and don't want to deal with watching something on youtube for an hour, I uploaded it here (or if you want the HD version, that's here).

But anyway, this week's episode! My thoughts after finally getting to re-watch:

Episode 4x03: Dead of Night

Things really started to get rolling this week. Finally we're past the this-is-what-Torchwood-is exposition-y stage, and starting to get into the meat of the plot. This is probably my favorite episode so far, partially because of that, and also because I think that Jane Espenson really gets the characters. I am super thrilled that she's written or co-wrote four more episodes. Cannot wait to see those.

The Team
I am loving the new team! I really missed seeing Torchwood work together as a team to get things done. We did have some of that in Children of Earth, yeah, but the whole Torchwood-going-on-missions thing has been missing since series two, and I am so glad it's back! I am really liking how both Esther and Rex fit into the established dynamic. I loved the entire opening sequence, from how badass Rex is in his confrontation, to Gwen stopping the cop car with the road spikes. They are already working together quite well, and that can only get better and more awesome as things go on. Jack saying "not bad team" filled my heart with joy.

The less action filled moments were great too (basically loved every scene in their temporary base of operations). I love the reference to CoE, with Gwen bringing everyone clothing and food. But unlike Ianto, Gwen isn't great at eyeballing people's clothing sizes. "If they don't fit, then tough" was perfect.

Rex
I am still loving him. He's having a difficult time following Jack's orders, but I think he'll eventually start to see that both Jack and Gwen know what they're doing here, and can actually get results, so hopefully he'll at the very least learn to work with the rest of the team. I think he's starting to finally see what the stakes actually are, especially when it's clear that everyone he trusts, even an old mentor, can be gotten to. They all have to work together, because they're pretty much all they've got.

He continues to be a bit douchey, of course, most notably about Vera's mother, and ex-Torchwood members who've died. At least he realized his comment to Vera was insensitive, and apologized, so some progress there!

Esther
Esther is, right now, filling both the Tosh role, and the beginning-of-series-one!Gwen role, but I think she is holding her own. Not crazy about the fact that she's clearly pining for Rex (he so doesn't deserve her), but at least it's more subtle than Tosh and Owen, and will hopefully be much less annoying. I really loved the scene between her and Gwen. Female friendship is, unfortunately, something that's been missing from the show all along, so it's great to see how well Esther and Gwen get along already.

The Sex Scene
So, apparently some people had sex this week, you guys. I guess I have to talk about the sex scene, right? So, that was the most controversy over the least explicit scene that I've seen in ages. Not that it was G-rated or anything, but it wasn't porny enough to justify all of the fuss people were making. I did like how the scene was shot, the parallel choreography and camera work between the two halves, etc., but I think it suffered a bit from all of the press it got. Much ado about nothing, pretty much. It was probably one of the tamest sex scenes I've seen on any of the shows I watch or have watched on pay cable.

I don't understand how Vera could have been so chill at finding Rex in her apartment like that. Did they know each other pre-accident, and have some kind of previous relationship? Because otherwise, I find their relationship super weird, and the fact that she didn't freak out at him after he would have had to have broken into her place, and even wanted to sleep with him, even more so.

I did appreciate that Jack's type (in guys at least) is someone who likes the coat. If that whole thing wasn't a nod to his first meeting(s) with Ianto, IDK what is. Also, I love that we now know he keeps the vortex manipulator on at all times. :D Also, I really liked the safe sex bit at the beginning because it shows that they're being responsible and thinking about these things.

And speaking of parallels in the sex scene, I liked that the conversations afterward had some parallels as well. Vera's thoughts about her mom's illness and death were clearly a parallel to Gwen and Jack's thoughts of Ianto.

Jack and Gwen
My favorite scene this week was the phone call between Jack and Gwen. Such an amazing scene! John Barrowman plays it perfectly, a little drunk, a little vulnerable. I love hearing something real from Jack about his feelings. He missed Gwen, and it's clear he misses the way things used to be, with the old team, with Ianto, and Tosh and Owen. Loved the little mention of Ianto. It's clear he's on both of their minds a lot, and neither of them has really had anyone to talk about the whole situation with, at least not anyone who could really understand what being part of Torchwood is like. I am excited for them to potentially talk about this more in the future. This was the perfect opener, though, to what promises to be something that makes me sob like a tiny child.

I'm not crazy about Gwen just hanging up on Jack like that, though. Yes, she's obviously still upset about him having left in the first place (and rightly so!), and she's finally getting a chance to see and talk to Rhys and Anwen, but a "gotta go, Esther got me in contact with Rhys" wouldn't have gone amiss.

Oswald, Jilly, and PhiCorp
Glad they've started going somewhere with the Oswald storyline, because while i found the idea of this storyline interesting, and I more or less liked what they did with him in the first two episodes, it will be good to see what his role in all this actually is. I like that we're getting to see both sides of the world's reaction to him. There's, of course, the creepy fanaticism (that ultra-creepy "did you touch him" to Jack outside the TV station), which falls in line with the way he's portraying himself as a sort of prophet. And then, on the other side, we have people like the diner patrons, and the cops, who remember the horrible things he did and think he's a terrible person. So, a nice balance there. I am confused as to why the news media would just let him sit there and speechify about the need for all prescription drugs to be available over-the-counter (which is a terrible idea, BTW. If people can just buy whatever they want without seeing a doctor, it's inevitable they won't know what to take, and will probably end up with something that interacts negatively with their existing medication and hurt themselves. If this goes through without any regulation, I predict a bunch of deaths from it once the miracle is reversed.), though.

I continue to be impressed with Jilly. She's so good at manipulating people! She manipulates Vera into the PhiCorp meeting, and manipulates Oswald into his own meeting with PhiCorp. It's unclear what PhiCorp want with Vera as of yet, but Oswald seems to be there to preach "the message" for PhiCorp, so that they have someone to sway public opinion towards what they want.

On a totally shallow note, I loved Jilly's dress in the scenes at PhiCorp, and I continue to covet her coat.

Jack and Oswald
My other favorite scene in this episode was the confrontation between Jack and Oswald. On the surface, it was a pretty standard "hero confronts the villain" scene, but there's so much more underneath. Jack says he knows that Oswald's lying about being forgiven. Because Jack doesn't think that he can ever be forgiven for what he did to Steven. It makes for an interesting parallel between Jack and Oswald. The best moment of Oswald's life was murdering Suzie Cabina, whereas killing Steven was the worst moment of Jack's.

Jack thinks Oswald is searching for execution. That he wants to die. Is that true, though? I mean, it seems to me that Jack's approaching this from the perspective of someone who regrets killing a child, but it's obvious Oswald probably only regrets that he can't kill again. Something in Jack's comments struck a chord with Oswald, though.

Pretty much everything about this scene was great, but I wonder why Jack decided to take the recorder out and show it to Oswald? Why play his hand like that? Unless he had a secret, second recorder hidden somewhere. Oswald's guards didn't check his pockets.

Random Stuff That Didn't Fit Anywhere Else (in more or less chronological order)

The previouslies seem to be making a link between Rex and "people who should be dead that aren't". Does that mean he'll die when things go back to normal? I wouldn't be super surprised if he did, but I like him and would love for him to stay around.

The Soulless are so far uninteresting. They looked so creepy in the trailer, too. Hopefully they'll do something more with them, because right now I'm really questioning their relevance.

Yay, the contact lenses are back. Clearly they are the most useful piece of Torchwood tech. I'm so glad that we actually see Gwen blinking while wearing them, too, because it drove me crazy that we never saw that when Lois wore them. I mean, who never blinks, right? Although, I tried to figure out how Gwen had gotten them back from Bridget Spears, and I had to stop and just handwave it. Loved Gwen being all "they're isomorphic" and no one buying it for a second, except Rex. Clearly, he would never have let anyone but him go in if she hadn't lied, but it worked for the laughs factor, too.

I'm of two minds about the "these are the differences between British and American English" jokes. Some of them were kind of funny (pants vs trousers, and Gwen driving on the wrong side of the road), but they were mostly unnecessary (Brits know that we call them chips in America, okay?), and will probably get tedious if they continue in future episodes. But they could have been way worse, I'm sure.

Loved the TARDIS nod with the PhiCorp warehouse being "bigger on the inside than the outside". I love any and all mentions of the Doctor, and I love how natural this feels, and that it's something that new viewers wouldn't be confused by, but those of us who know will love. Much like the Owen reference in episode one.

I absolutely loved the "my arm is itching"/"poor baby"/"I think it's infected"/"it's itching because it's healing" exchange. Ugh, Gwen is such a mom, it's adorable. But Jack still doesn't appear to have ever bandaged (or cleaned!) the wound, and it's driving me nuts. And if it's infected, it's because he's still the idiot who hasn't learned about the existence of Neosporin yet.

The sobriety chip thing was very interesting to me. Kind of amazing to see that things have changed so severely for the world that people are willing to throw away a decade of sobriety. People must either not have any hope that things will go back to normal, or they figure that "hey, I can't die, so whatever!". I don't know that the latter really jives with my observations of the insanely diverse cross section of people I know (personally, or through Mom's store) who are in recovery, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this kind of thing happening, were we actually in a miracle-like situation. However, the majority of my reaction to that scene was ASL;KFJAS;DLFKJ THAT ISN'T WHAT AN AA CHIP LOOKS LIKE! As someone whose Mom's bookstore has a large 12-Step Recovery section (which includes coins for AA, Al-Anon, and NA) I was really distracted by that. AA coins are about the size of a silver dollar, and most of them are bronze-y in color. Yeah, they sell everything below one year in an aluminum version, so they do come in colors, but they don't look like that. Did they not research it at all? Or did the World Service Organization refuse to let them use authentic ones? I clearly put way too much thought into this, I know. But it was super distracting.

Okay, probable unpopular fannish opinion ahead, but I am actually really glad that Ianto's dead now. Not that I don't miss him (and Tosh and Owen *sob*), but just based on what we know so far, and where I see this series going, I'm pretty sure that if he had lived, he would have died this season, and this death would've been about a billion times worse than the one he had in CoE. I'm guessing that when they figure out how to reverse whatever's causing the miracle, everyone who should have died will die. And, knowing RTD, some time in the first few episodes, Ianto would have sustained horrible injuries of some sort, the kind that would normally have killed him, or that would at least be hard to come back from. So, the whole saving the world thing would be colored by the fact that when they figured out how to fix things, they'd lose him (much like they probably will with Rex :((((). And we'd have to watch Ianto dying by inches every week. So, yeah, I'm glad he didn't survive. [I wrote this bit before the season premiered, and Gwen's mention of Ianto in this episode made me even more sure that I'm right about it.]

Jack is entirely too thrilled with that hangover, the weirdo. I thought he was able to get drunk, though. Or at least his behavior in the past that they talk about during "Fragments" seems to indicate that he used to get drunk and talk about how great the Doctor is (and how the Doctor was going to fix him). Which has always been my theory as to why he stopped drinking. Probably his tolerance has gone way up in the last hundred (or two thousand, depending on how you look at it) years, making getting drunk a lot harder, or maybe impossible, but that's no excuse to enjoy a hangover. :)

Oswald's guard is the worst guard ever. Just letting him go for ice?! As though he couldn't possibly escape.

I continue to be unable to deal with Jack and his flat American accent saying extremely British things. The first time I watched this, and Jack busted out with "sod it" at the start of his scene with Oswald, I had to pause and laugh for a couple of minutes. So, I had to pay for parking, but it wasn't that much more than a train ticket, and I could be air conditioned on the way there and back. Good plan all around, I think.

And speaking of the concert, Alison Krauss & Union Station were wonderful! Worth absolutely every penny I paid for the ticket. Their opener, Jeremy Lister, was quite good, too. Apparently, he and his brother, who played keyboards and sang backing vocals for him, were on The Sing-Off, the acapella choir competition show that was on NBC last year. Here's a video of his group, Street Corner Symphony, singing Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears For Fears. They are actually pretty fantastic, and I'm not a super big fan of acapella.

And then Alison Krauss & Union Station! That is an incredibly talented bunch of musicians, right there. They are all fantastic at their chosen instruments, and everyone got a chance to show off and be great. Jerry Douglass, who is their Dobro player, and apparently widely considered to be one of the best around, was just incredible. I'm a big fan of the Dobro to begin with, but he really blew me away. And Ron Block, who plays banjo, was just ridiculous. Also, Alison Krauss not only has a gorgeous voice, and can play the hell out of the fiddle, but she's also one of the most adorable human beings alive.

They played for about two hours, and their set was a really nice mix of old and new stuff, both Alison's solo stuff and Union Station stuff, and even something from the record Alison did with Robert Plant. I'm super glad I listened to the new album before the show, though, since they played about half of it. They had a drummer/percussionist and a keyboard player who came out and played occasionally, but mostly it was just the five of them. I liked it a lot, despite feeling like it moved a little bit slowly at times. Yes, even with the gallons of information it dumped on us. I think things will really start to pick up and become more balanced next week, since our new team is finally together (which will most likely merge their storylines, and give everyone more screen time), and we've been introduced to the majority of the major players. I am also a big fan of Doris Egan's writing (check out her LJ, tightropegirl, for some excellent posts about writing in general, and about specific shows she's worked on), so I was super excited to finally get to see something from her again (since I don't watch House). And this did not disappoint.

I broke my thoughts down by storyline (sort of). Before I get to that, I do want to say that I'm kind of surprised they've started in with the previouslies already. I know we love doing that in America, but there's only been one episode so far, guys. I doubt this would be super confusing for people that missed last week's if we didn't have these. Maybe it's just my bias against previouslies, though, since I really never like seeing them show up. Guess we're stuck with them for the next eight weeks, though. Anyway, on to the plot!

Torchwood (and Rex)
I'm glad they got the whole "it's Jack's fault!" thing out of the way. Whatever is actually happening, and whoever is actually causing it, it's pretty unlikely that it's all being done just to get at Jack. Yeah, I'm sure he has a lot of enemies, but there have to be easier ways of getting at him than doing something as complicated as this. I love that Rhys defended him, too. That whole exchange was just brilliant. And if you can't believe Rhys saying it's not Jack's fault, Rhys who really doesn't like Jack, who can you believe? Hopefully Jack believes him, because I wouldn't be surprised if Jack had (at least for a second) agreed with Gwen.

Rex continues to be fantastic. He is such an unrepentant dick; it's so great. And, of course, separating Gwen from her family like that was a shitty thing to do, especially in the manner it was done (just cuffing them and dragging them away), but as he tells Gwen at the end of the episode, it's a good thing that Anwen isn't around to be involved in this. Not a safe place for a baby to be at all, and Rhys can take care of her just fine back in Cardiff. Hopefully we will see a lot of that in future episodes (along with more Andy!).

I like the hints we continue to get that Rex is competent and good at his job, despite the douchey exterior. The Owen parallels are super evident, but hopefully they will not veer too closely to that characterization, and keep Rex his own man. And keep him this fantastic foil for Jack, because the Jack/Rex relationship continues to fill my heart with joy. I could watch them insult each other forever. I just want to draw hearts around them, you guys!

Once again, I utterly loved the interactions between Jack and Gwen in this episode. I would literally have been happy just watching an hour of them chatting on the plane about painting the house and growing roses, but maybe that's just me. :D Gwen is so angry at him, so hurt by him having left her, but she still responds instantly with "yes" to his "did you miss me". And that's exactly how the audience feels, too. Of course we missed you, Jack. That doesn't mean that we aren't a little hurt that you could just leave us so easily like that. I loved, too, that they started to get into the serious issues they've got between them (where did Jack go, etc.), and I can't wait to see how this is developed throughout the rest of the series. And the Peter Pan reference was so great! Jack as the boy who never wants to grow up. It sucks that Jack's time away doesn't seem to have helped him in the way that he thought it would. Running away from your problems rarely solves things, though, so it's not a huge surprise. Just sad.

My favorite parts of this episode were probably the scenes on the plane. It got a teeny bit too MacGyver at times, but I so didn't care. It was a great way to bring the Torchwood/Rex storyline together with the Dr. Vera storyline, a nice way to make use of all of the characters (loved the two flight attendants!), and worked really well to make the possibility of Jack actually dying a real one, rather than just one of those empty scenes that falls flat because the lead character is never actually in danger of dying on television. Very dynamic stuff; I love it.

However, I was really confused by the assumption on Jack's part that he must be sick because due to being immortal, he never developed any resistance to germs. I didn't think that was how Jack works. Being a fixed point/not being able to stay dead doesn't mean he can't catch a cold, does it? He can still get little cuts and bruises (witness the split lip of indeterminate amount of time after being punched in "Cyberwoman"), so it's not like he's totally impervious to everything. This smells like retcon to me. But whatever.

Gwen was also incredibly badass and amazing throughout. Just breaking out of those cuffs like nothing! And even though I've seen it in about ten different promos, I still absolutely loved the "if you're the best England's got to offer..." "I'm Welsh" exchange. And laying her out with one punch! Damn, Gwen Cooper, you're so awesome. Also, when Jack protests at the idea of being given formaldehyde, and her response is basically to tell him (a dying man, btw) to shut up? Hearts forever!

Also particularly loved the scene where they tear the hell out of the plane in order to get at the orange tubing. Rex is all "careful about cutting that tube, cause it's not labeled. If that's the wrong thing, we're screwed". And Gwen is just like "yeah, whatever", because she cares more about saving Jack's life than the possibility that she could be cutting something that could damage the plane. ♥

Pretty much everything about the scenes at the airport at the end was fantastic. From Rex's whole "bullshit" speech, to Jack and Gwen not realizing that they were in baggage claim so they could just walk out of the airport, to Gwen complaining about the size of the getaway car (don't knock the Mini, Gwen, they are great cars!), to Rex bragging that the CIA paid him off with more money than Esther. Also, Jack's pleased expression when he was reunited with his vortex manipulator. ♥

Esther and the CIA
Random note: Clearly whoever's job it is to create all of the fancy graphics and emails that showed up on people's computers in this episode didn't expect people to pause and read everything on the screen, because the email that's on Esther's computer screen before the one saying that Rex and Torchwood are coming back to the US appears is total gibberish in paragraph two. It looked like a contest to see how many times one can use "ballistics" in a paragraph (a lot of times, as it turns out). This has been your totally obsessive/nerdy moment for the day.

I am really liking Esther a lot. I liked her last week, but she continues to grow on me. It really sucks for her that all she wants to do is work on the Torchwood case because she's fascinated by it, and also clearly wants to help Rex, and she gets screwed because of it. But she was smart and competent, and got herself the hell out of there before she could get caught. I appreciate her not making any of the stupid mistakes you always see people making in these situations (like Gwen and Rhys in CoE not shielding their faces from the ATM camera when they tried to get money out on Day Two), and also that being nice to the guy in the parking garage is ultimately what got her out of there. Very nice stuff.

And Wayne Knight as Friedkin! I know everyone thinks of him as Newman, but since I never watched Seinfeld (except for the ton of random episodes I've seen in reruns), I always think of him as Dennis Nedry, the guy who tries to smuggle out the dinosaur DNA samples, and ends up getting killed, in Jurassic Park. So, this role is not as much of a departure as you might think. He was appropriately mysterious, here, with the requisite even-more-mysterious shadowy boss(es). I'm wondering what the significance of that triangle symbol their communications came with is, other than that it made it look like he was getting orders via Magic 8-Ball. I liked this introduction to what is most likely the big villain of the season. I'm definitely excited to see how this plot unfolds.

I loved all of the scenes in the CIA that were part of the Oswald plotline. From the autotuned video of Oswald's execution (loling forever), to the scene where they watch Oswald break down on the news ("If we had any human dignity, we would turn this thing off right now" as they keep watching), all of this stuff was fantastic. I like that you see how the Oswald storyline may start to play out with the world at large, when Charlotte actually feels sorry for him, even though she knows what a horrible human being he is. But more on all that later.

I wonder if we're going to see inside the CIA anymore, now that both Rex and Esther are on the run/part of Team Torchwood. I hope we do, because I really like the perspective on events that we get from those characters, and I'm not sure we'll continue to get that from Esther, since she'll be involved in events via Torchwood from now on.

Dr. Juarez and the Medical Side of Things
Loved Dr. Vera this week. The medical stuff was all really interesting, both in the ER scene, and the panel scenes. I like that they are actually spending time developing this side of the story, since, were this a RL problem, this would probably be one of the biggest concerns we'd have. I think they did a good job laying the groundwork for the need for painkillers, which I think is going to be something that comes back in a major way, if the next time trailer is any indication.

Also, the fact that everyone is still aging is mildly terrifying (also terrifying: that arm!). Loved the use of the Tithonus myth, although the whole shrank-into-a-cicada thing gave me unwanted flashbacks to 900-year-old Dobby!Doctor in "Last of the Timelords".

Oswald Danes and Jilly Kitzinger
Oswald continues to be super creepy, and I continue to be really impressed with Bill Pullman's performance. Oswald's "breakdown" on the news show was so over-the-top that I was kind of shocked that anyone believed him. I liked how they showed us the reaction of the PA before and after the interview, and her apology to him clearly shows where his plotline is heading. That, and Charlotte's reaction when they were watching the interview at the CIA, really rang true for me as the kind of behavior that has happened around real life killers. I have a feeling this whole plotline is just going to get more and more reminiscent of the hoopla surrounding Ted Bundy as time goes on.

Jilly is so fascinating to me. She is clearly a huge opportunist, and she goes right after what she wants, but I wonder why she wants the things she does. Why Oswald Danes and Dr. Vera specifically? I can see the Danes PR angle, a conversation I loved, btw, but I'm confused what someone who works in PR is doing behaving like a pharmaceutical rep. Yeah, pharmaceutical companies obviously employ PR people, but those people don't generally tend to have free samples of drugs to hand out.

I wonder who she really works for. She tells Danes that she has other employers than the news channel, which could mean FiCorp (or PhiCorp, or PfiCorp, or however it's actually spelled. do we know?), but why would a drug company want to be involved with a convicted child killer? I noticed that the business card she gave to Danes appeared to be different than the one she gave Vera. We don't get a clear look at the front of the card she gives Danes, but it's obviously plain white. The one she gives Vera has blue bars at the top and bottom. So, why does she need more than one type of business card? Very suspicious.

Lauren Ambrose is so fantastic in this role, already, and I can't wait to see how this character unfolds. Also, love the coat.

Random Other Things

I find this Morphic Field concept very intriguing. There are so many interesting connections to be made, just from skimming the wikipedia article, so I'm really excited to see where they go with this. It also feels like just the kind of thing they'd deal with on Doctor Who, so right at home on this show.

What is this "singularity" that was mentioned both on the news story that directly preceded the Danes interview, and by one of the doctors in the panel Vera stepped into?
