Glòria Pérez-Salmerón (Barcelona, 1958) has a Bachelor’s degree in Document
ation from the University of Barcelona (UB, 2000) and in Librarianship and Documentation from the oldest library school in Europe, the prestigious Escola Universitària ‘Jordi Rubió i Balaguer de Barcelona’ (1984). She also earned two Masters Degrees: “Management of Libraries” from the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona (UPF) in 1998; and “Government and Public Administration in the Information Society, Electronic Government”, awarded jointly by the UPF and the Escola d’Administració Pública de Catalunya in 2010.
In her long and varied professional career, she has been involved in library services and management at all levels, from setting up and managing a local public library to holding Spain’s highest position as director of the National Library, the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE), from 2010-2013. In addition to having been the BNE’s director, she had also served on its Board and Permanent Commission (2008-2013). Prior to this, she had held the position of Head of the DIBA’s e-Government Office from 2008 to 2010. In previous years she had worked in senior positions within governmental-coordinated library services: as Director of Library Cooperation of Catalonia’s Autonomous Government, Generalitat de Catalunya (2005 to 2008); coordinator of the Catalan Library System; and technical director of DIBA’s Public Libraries Network, 2001-2005. Early in her career, she set up and directed the Can Casacuberta Central Public Library and Public Library Network of Badalona (1992-2001), coinciding with her serving as coordinator of the Public Libraries of Barcelona’s Northern Area.
Currently she works as a senior consultant for library issues at the Barcelona Council, Diputació de Barcelona (DIBA) and holds the position of President of the Spanish Federation of Archivist, Librarianship, Documentation and Museums Associations (FESABID), for a second term. (She had previously held this post from 2008-2010.)
In addition, she served as a board member and Vice-President of the European Bureau of Library Information and Documentation Associations (EBLIDA) (2008-2015) and also as a member of IFLA’s Governing Board, working on the Finances Committee and on ALP, Action for Development through Libraries Programme.
During her period as director of the National Library of Spain, she launched the Biblioteca Digital del Patrimonio Iberoamericano (Latin-American Digital Heritage Portal) in 2012 and also oversaw the incorporation of the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica into the World Digital Library, and similarly, the National Library catalogue’s entry into OCLC’s WorldCat.
She has given numerous professional lectures and courses and participated in international projects, and was a member of IFLA’s Public Libraries Standing Committee (2005-2012), CENL Foundation Conference of European National Librarians, CDNL Conference of Directors of National Libraries, and an elected member of TEL, The European Library.
