This paper discusses the trends in Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects towards its commitm... more This paper discusses the trends in Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects towards its commitment to achieve Sustainable Development in the host countries. For the study, the first ten officially registered CDM projects in the energy sector are compared to the ten most recently approved projects. These include both wind and hydro power projects. The paper tries to analyze and then assess their contribution in terms of energy generated per CERs (Certified Emission Reductions), number of local people employed per 1000 CERs and their contribution to local economy development and welfare development. Most of the sustainable development commitments are closely related with the project operations. Very few CDM projects put forth conscious efforts towards achieving sustainable development objective. The projects are mostly driven my market forces in securing carbon credits. Thus the CDM projects prime objective is under achieved aiming primarily at CERs generations. Finally, the paper proposes measurable indicators that could be used to assess renewable energy projects for their merit in meeting the criteria of sustainable development.
