Letter meme

My friend hardboiledbaby gave me the letter "O":

Something I hate: It's hard to come up with something that I *hate* --- but there are some things that I dislike: octopi (I don't know, I think I'm creeped out by their bodies, though I think their legs are interesting. Either way, I sure don't want to *eat* them!), opera (especially when I have a headache, it's just kind of shriek-y for my taste), and oysters (ick!).

Something I love: Oranges, and other citrus fruits! I know they're acidic, so that's bad for your stomach and your teeth, but I love the zingy flavor of all things citrus, especially oranges.

Somewhere I've been: Oklahoma! My husband and I have driven twice to Fort Worth, Texas, so we drove through OK to get there. I have to admit, the state didn't make a big impression on me, it was just one more state to go through to get to TX, you might say it was just ... "OK".
But I like the musical. :-)

We've also been to Oregon. I liked Portland the best, what a cool, quirky city! Powell's Books and Voodoo Doughnuts both rock!

Somewhere I'd like to go: Oslo, Norway! My ancestors came from Norway, and I'd love to see the Scandinavian countries someday. I'd especially like to go there on a cruise and see the frozen fjords.

Someone I know: oasis3017, who hasn't posted to LJ in quite awhile, now that I think of it, but she writes beautifully when she does!

A film I like: "O Brother Where Art Thou?" -- George Clooney just played the hell out of a Southern convict con man on the run. The movie is funny, has great music (like "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow" and "Down to the River to Pray"), great performances, and is the most interesting take on Homer's "Odyssey" that I can ever imagine.

If you want to play, leave a comment for a letter of your very own!

Ten day meme -- day seven

YAY, I finally made it out of my rut of not wanting to get out of bed in the morning/oversleeping!

Other good stuff: tomorrow is Friday (and payday!), more overtime this week, I'm getting together with my BFF for lunch on Saturday, I'm reading some pretty good books, and my trainee is getting ever closer to being off checking!

Day 1 - Ten random facts about yourself
Day 2 - Nine things you do everyday
Day 3 - Eight things that annoy you
Day 4 - Seven fears/phobias
Day 5 - Six songs that you’re addicted to
Day 6 - Five things you can’t live without
Day 7 - Four memories you won’t forget
Day 8 - Three words you can’t go a day without
Day 9 - Two things you wish you could do
Day 10 - One person you can trust

Ah yes, I remember it wellCollapse )

More overtime and BRRRR!

SO cold today!! It's this kind of weather that simultaneously makes me feel grateful that I have an indoor/office job (unlike someone who works in construction or a mail carrier, etc.) AND makes me wish I could stay at home all day, preferably in a warm bed with lots of books (see userpic).

I made it safely to work today, despite scary descriptions on the news from the weatherman and the traffic reporters. With black ice on the roads, there were a LOT of accidents on the freeways today, and I saw the aftermath of a couple of them. I'm glad I didn't see the accident OR the aftermath of a 20 car pileup (with a semi!), but I heard about it on the news.

It was another busy day at work, and I worked another hour of overtime. It's a good feeling, knowing that I've worked two out of the three possible hours of overtime -- an accomplished feeling, and relief, too. I'm glad to have a limit on the amount of overtime possible, because in the past (many years ago now) when we were offered unlimited overtime, I overdid it a few times, exhausting myself mentally and physically for not that much money. And given the opportunity and knowing what it can do to me, I'd probably do it again, overwork myself, I mean. Truth is, I know my limitations, but I don't pay enough attention to them.

In other news, I'm giving up on another book that I started -- my BFF and I were discussing books last time we got together, as we often do (get together AND discuss books), and she told me about one she has on her Kindle: "The Faker's Guide to the Classics -- Everything You Need To Know About the Books You Should Have Read (But Didn't)" by Michelle Witte. Considering that there's another subtitle on the cover: Now with more snark, sizzle, and sarcasm!, I got it from the library. Unfortunately, this author's "snark, sizzle, and sarcasm" just come off seeming like real dislike for the books and authors, which gets old really fast. I've definitely seen books like this with considerably more humor to them (maybe not as much detail, but I'm willing to give up some detail for less sarcasm.

National Novel Writing Month - day 15

472 words written so far today, but I am still well ahead of the goal -- this vacation is exactly why I have prepared for days when I would be too busy (with FUN stuff) to write. Maybe more words later, probably not. More words tomorrow, for sure, how many, I don't know yet. New total: 37,663.
