1) The Caper Cafe

You know how the Leverage crew love to to have a restaurant\/bar to hang out in. After retirement, Nate and Sophie open a cafe, where they entertain all sorts of people from their past--Parker, Hardison and Eliot to plan their jobs, previous clients, and even a few past adversaries. The food is light but nourishing, the menu changes frequently, and there are a few rich delights for special celebrations.

Menu Items (thanks to my pal <\/a>seraphina_snape<\/b><\/a><\/span> for the list of cons in her 12 Days post)

Ponzi Scheme Soup<\/b>: Tempting ingredients--peppers, onions, garlic and pork loin--get added, then taken away to make a flavorful broth. We then add shell pasta, potatoes, carrots and turkey to make a healthy soup that's not as rich as it seems.

The Turnabout Salad<\/b>: A complex blend of micro greens, cabbage, spiced walnuts, radishes and a green goddess-style dressing. Every bite will be different!

The Cuban Sandwich<\/b>: You think you know what you're getting, but with this cuban sandwich you may get more than you bargained for. Prosciutto instead of ham, brie instead of swiss, and roasted chicken instead of pork, with spicy pickles and hot mustard.

The Zanzibar Marketplace Stew<\/b>: This comforting, spicy stew full of simmered potatoes, carrots, turnips and onions might fool you by being complete vegan--the "meat" is actually tofu but with a depth of flavor that you will simply love.

Fortuitously I just did my Advent(ure) Calendar<\/a> for our winter break because I was concerned that I'd get bored and irritated with so much down time and no celebrations. So some of the favorite things are from that, others elsewhere...

1) In the harsh desert of the American Southwest, climbers Alex Honnold and Cedar Wright summited 45 rock towers, biked 700 miles, and pushed their bodies to the limits, all in the name of an adventure they aptly dubbed "<\/span>Sufferfest<\/span><\/a>." 21 min. <\/span>I’m not much one for extreme “sports” but really enjoyed this. First, the guys aren’t fancy in any way; they seem humble and charitable and also environmental, not surprisingly. Worth watching!<\/span><\/span><\/span>

2) Walk around NYC Chinatown<\/span><\/a>. A historical look at Chinatown in New York City; really good writing and photos, and one interactive photo\/video part that I want to know how they did it, where it merges the current day view with the historical view! Worth checking out and made me nostalgic for NYC.

3) <\/span><\/span>Pick a nature webcam to follow at <\/span>Explore.org<\/span><\/a> – many, many options.  I like those that are live (patches of boredom punctuated by excitement). Check out Tembe elephant park, Zen cams (pipeline surfing, etc.) Or Bald eagles webcam: friendsofbigbearvalley.org [eggs expected to hatch in January]

4) Exoplanet Travel Bureau<\/span><\/a>:  <\/span>Explore 360-degree visualizations of the surfaces of planets of other stars. This is both scientific and fanciful, and I liked the disclaimer that the visualizations were "artist renderings based on little data."

5) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Geo Guesser<\/span><\/a>. Drops you in a spot and you guess where it is. It's a long shot, but I came close a few times. Would be great as a party game but I can kill some time on it. Requires sign up.

6) Mix.com is the new version of the former StumbleUpon, where you put in your interests, click a button, and it randomly (supposedly) takes you to a website. I have found some cool stuff, especially if you add "art" and "science fiction" and things like that, you're more likely to get graphic stuff instead of just articles.

7) Atlas Obscura<\/a><\/span> is a cool site that features weird and unusual places in the world; could be useful for planning travel but also fun to read just as cultural or historical oddities, food favorites in different places, or behavioral tidbits and event.

8) I love advice columns and Ask A Manager<\/a> is a great one, even if you're not a manager (which I am). It's a lot of questions\/answers about work culture, getting along with people, and career advice from a person who is very reasonable and well-balanced. Some of the pieces are funny, such as ones on bad workplace holiday parties.

9) The Greater Good Science Center<\/a> is an awesome research institute that's all about positive psychology and ways to be happier and healthier, based on reseach. I've done some work with them and it's a nice mix of science, behavior, relationships, happiness, and tips for living.

10) Under the Skin<\/a>, Russell Brand's podcast on Luminary. Yes, you do have to subscribe to get the full options, but you can check some of his out for free. It's hard to explain why I like these so much when I don't really like podcasts in general. Castle's look turned from shocked to puzzled to peeved. \"Dammit, and I missed all the fun?\" He passed his hand over his mouth and paused. \"Well what do you know? Maybe I still got some of the old curse left in me.\" And with a mischievous grin, he bared his teeth.

[Note: This is part of an ongoing series<\/a> of mine that seems to never end, where Giles takes the Scoobies to London after the fall of Sunnydale and meets up with his old buddy Lestrade, thus getting them involved with the BBC Sherlock crew.]


\u201cI must say, it\u2019s very nice of you to invite us for Christmas,\u201d Watson said as he shook Giles\u2019s hand and moved past him into the rather large hotel suite. \u201cIndeed, indeed,\u201d Giles smiled. \u201cMight as well share the wealth, so lucky to have landed this deal, and after all, Christmas wouldn\u2019t be Christmas without\u2014\u201c

\u201cI know this one!\u201d Willow jumped forward, \u201cChristmas won\u2019t be Christmas without\u2026.\u201d she intoned, looking around her expectantly and waving a napkin filled with some type of crumbly appetizer.

\u201cWet comic books and a sleeping bag in the backyard?\u201d Xander asked brightly from the buffet table. \u201cStaking vampires in a Christmas tree lot?\u201d Buffy called out from the bar. \u201cMindless twaddle and small talk and meaningless gifts?\u201d Sherlock pushed past John at the doorway and went to glare out the large bow window. \"Getting embarrassed in front of your new girlfriend by your flatmate?\" John murmured as he went to get a beer.

Giles\u2019s smile faltered as he looked to greet the next guest. \u201cWhile I\u2019m tempted to add a wry observation from my own experience with Christmases past,\u201d Mycroft said smoothly, only briefly grimacing at the memory of interminable roast dinners at his parents\u2019 cottage, \u201cI believe Ms. Rosenberg is quoting a well-loved book in saying \u201cChristmas won\u2019t be Christmas without any presents.\u201d From behind his back he produced a large shopping bag filled with brightly wrapped parcels and handed it to Willow, who squealed and started digging through it.

\"I must say, that's most thoughtful of you.\" Giles steered Mycroft toward the bar. \"I'm afraid we're not quite organized enough for gifts--\" Mycroft waved a gloved hand. \"No matter, no matter, mere trifles, and selected by my assistant, so I hope they suit. And I'm given to understand that you and your--\" he looked around the room--\"team have been most helpful in several of my brother's, and Inspector Lestrade's, undertakings, so consider this a small token of thanks. And, of course, hosting this lovely gathering.\" Despite the diplomatic tone and expression, Giles didn't miss the slight eye roll at the mention of the \"undertakings\" nor the small emphasis on the word \"lovely.\"

\"Quite, quite,\" he said heartily, clapping Mycroft on the arm. \"As I was about to say, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without friends and family gathered round.\" He paused for a moment, thinking of his young charges having lost so much of their family and friends. He raised his glass, cleared his throat, and was about to make a small, celebratory speech, when he noticed that no-one was paying any attention. Willow, Xander and Buffy were oohing and ahhing over the apparently more than trifling gifts; Sherlock and John seemed to be having an whispered argument at the window, and Mycroft was leaning against the bar, sipping a whiskey with his gloves still on, and staring at the blinking light above the mantel. Backstories for the crew members and how they joined Serenity. Great insights into the characters, very believable.

The Blue Sun Job by guildsister<\/a>
Great caper story, novel-length, with detailed backstory on Mal and Zoe and what they went through before Serenity.

That Old Yeh Shen Story by LJC<\/a>
Reads like an episode, with the crew doing a job and romance starting between Simon and Kaylee.

Lex Talionis by LJC<\/a>
The crew get revenge on an old enemy and show how much they care about each other. Aura snuggled down under the covers. "That was fun, Mommy. I like birthdays!"

Zoe stretched out next to her daughter on the big bed. "It was fun, wasn't it? Well I have one more surprise for you, baby." She held up a silver case. "It's something special, from your Daddy."

Aura looked puzzled. "What is it?" she said slowly.

Zoe grinned and held it closer. "I know it don't look like much, but it's what's on<\/u> it that's special." She shifted around so Aura was in the crook of her arm. "See, your Daddy, he was funny, he was brought up to like old stuff, stuff passed down from your family." She paused, thinking yet again how different they'd been, him raised in the same house his kin had settled since the escape from Old Earth, complete with treasured remnants of that time; her on a ship endlessly prowling The Black, with no more'n' they could stash under a bunk. "Anyway, your dad loved music, of all kinds, especially weird old stuff from way way back." She waggled the silver box. "So, before you were born, he chose some special songs, just for you." She paused again, her throat closing, willing herself not to cry on this most happy of days.

Aura shifted her eyes from staring at the silver box to her mother's face. Peering closely, she started to say something, then instead lay her head on Zoe's shoulder. "But 'music' is just singing, like Kaylee does around the engine, or singing Happy Birthday." Her eyes lit up at the recent memory. "What's on the silver thing?"

Zoe gave the girl a hug, settled her down, and placed the box on the pillow. "Here, I'll show you. Just close your eyes." She pushed a button for them both to listen.

Of all the crew, he is probably the most uniformly happy being on a ship, out in space, with all of his favorite people.

Ex-con and recent bar owner, Grey was able to convert his driving (and frankly, car thieving) ability into piloting a spaceship, mixing a love of danger with a healthy dose of stability and care. My Experience: <\/b>I love posole\/pozole and often order it in restaurants, too. I've spent some time in Hopi communities and a version of this is served throughout the dance days, a very mild version with mutton and served with bread called "stew." After vacationing in Santa Fe I brought home a package of dried hominy and planned ahead and made posole with that, and it was so much better than the canned hominy that is easier to get locally...then I found this new recipe that suggests draining, drying, and toasting the canned hominy. It came out great!
