Roach was born in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, but grew up in Brooklyn in a musical family. He was one of the first drummers to play in the bebop style, and played with the greats of the era, including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and Charles Mingus. Roach was part of the \u201cBirth Of The Cool\u201d sessions with Miles Davis, before starting his own quintet with trumpeter Clifford Brown. Roach is credited with freeing up the drumming of swing era players by shifting more rhythmic focus to the ride cymbal. Roach\u2019s \u201cWe Insist! Freedom Now Suite\u201d is credited with helping the civil rights movement and formed the pioneering percussion ensemble M\u2019Boom. Roach taught at University of Massachusetts and played in many settings, from orchestral to gospel to duo outings with pianists Cecil Taylor and Mal Waldron.       Memphis-born trumpeter Booker Little was a bright light of the jazz world who died tragically young at age 23. A prodigiously talented hornman as well as a composer, Little first came to prominence as a member of Max Roach\u2019s band which he joined in 1956 after the death of Clifford Brown, another trumpet great gone far too soon. Little only made a handful of albums as a leader during his brief career including his astounding debut Booker Little 4 & Max Roach recorded in 1958 for United Artists when he was just 20 years old. The full breadth of Little\u2019s artistry leaps out of the grooves with his brilliant tone, astonishing technique, and inventive lines matched by Roach\u2019s fiery drums throughout this engaging set that also featured George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Art Davis on bass. The album opens with Miles Davis\u2019 \u201cMilestones\u201d and includes the standards \u201cSweet and Lovely\u201d and a stunning version of \u201cMoonlight Becomes You,\u201d but the album\u2019s centerpiece is the trio of Little originals: \u201cRounder\u2019s Mood,\u201d \u201cDungeon Waltz,\u201d and \u201cJewel\u2019s Tempo.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

                  Miles Davis\u2019 earliest masterpiece Birth Of The Cool<\/em> gets the royal treatment in celebration of the legendary trumpeter\u2019s Centennial. Following his trial-by-fire tenure in the Charlie Parker Quintet in the mid-1940s, Davis emerged with bolstered confidence and a creative hunger to explore new directions. A regular gathering of like-minded musicians at arranger Gil Evans\u2019 Manhattan apartment provided the workshop at which the Miles Davis Nonet was born, and in 1949-50 Davis led three seminal sessions for Capitol Records that documented this exciting new music with a cast of collaborators including Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, J.J.
