How do new States in this region establish the legitimacy of their rule over their territory and their population? This course addresses the use of official ideologies such as communism, liberalism or nationalism, and the production of social order through symbols of power such as money, billboards, monuments, urbanism or official celebrations. In this manner, the course will combine theoretical reflections with empirical research focused on specific areas, namely: Russia, Central Asia, Ukraine Belarus and Moldova, Caucasus, and the Baltic states. During each session, a specific example will be tackled on the basis of recent literature and the teachers' own research, all devoted to one of these areas within the FSU.
