Capital of Quantum
THIS IS WHERE
IS TRANSFORMING THE WORLD
Perfectly situated at the intersection of research, science, commercialization, policy and national security, this is the destination where quantum fuels innovation, speeds problem-solving, and addresses mission-critical needs.
“Quantum is changing the world, and Maryland is the best place in the world to change the world.” — Governor Wes Moore
World Quantum Day · April 2026
Maryland is the
Capital of Quantum
Maryland launched and leads the Capital of Quantum — a $1B public-private initiative anchoring one of the most defense-connected, research-rich quantum corridors in the world. Built on the University of Maryland’s foundation of a top-5 quantum PhD program, the National Quantum Lab (QLab), and the Quantum Startup Foundry, the ecosystem spans federal labs, national security agencies, research universities, investors, and industry partners across the greater Washington region. With Microsoft, IonQ, and a growing roster of quantum companies, Maryland is converting more than three decades of quantum science leadership into economic growth, national security capability, and America’s quantum future.

Vision
DEVELOPMENT
Maryland is advancing the frontiers of quantum science through world‑class research and development, while cultivating a robust quantum talent pipeline — from K‑12 to PhDs to professional upskilling. By integrating cutting‑edge R&D with education and training, Maryland ensures the state produces, attracts, and retains the scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs who will power mission relevant innovation and drive the commercial impact that will underpin the region’s quantum economy.
VENTURE
Maryland is accelerating the commercialization of quantum research by expanding access to QLab, strengthening the Quantum Startup Foundry, supporting entrepreneurial ventures, and deploying investment capital to translate discoveries into products, companies, and market impact. By aligning innovation pathways with national priorities, Maryland ensures its breakthroughs fuel both economic growth and the technologies that safeguard the nation.
INTEGRATION
Maryland is building the infrastructure, partnerships, and organizational structures needed to scale the ecosystem — including new facilities, federal collaborations, industry partnerships, international engagement, and a cohesive public identity that unites all components under the Capital of Quantum brand. Distinguished by its proximity to defense and intelligence communities, Maryland’s ecosystem is uniquely positioned to integrate quantum advances into mission‑critical capabilities while leading the nation in quantum innovation.
