It is argued that in order to understand notions of 'excelling' we need to locate it within the aims of the education where the learner is excelling.

Interpreting Secondary PE Teachers Personal Theories of Learning, 2020

As the central concern was how the teachers theorised learning this research took an interpretative phenomenological approach. Such a methodology aims to gain understandings of how people view and experience their world (Willig, 2001) and so can be seen to be epistemologically appropriate. There were three rounds of field work with each stage seeking to build on the previous one. This paper presents two of the headline findings of the research. First, that the participants held personal theories of learning that can be described as existing implicitly and explicitly although the differences should not be viewed as a binary; second, that the participating teachers' theories of learning could be interpreted as being inconsistent and at times even contradictory. 1
