The authors report on a 13-year-old boy who, after exercise, had respiratory distress and left up... more The authors report on a 13-year-old boy who, after exercise, had respiratory distress and left upper quadrant abdominal pain. Initially, a mistaken diagnosis of pneumothorax was made, and a chest tube was inserted. A nasogastric tube was then visualized on chest x-ray in the left hemithorax. He underwent a laparotomy and had herniation of spleen, stomach, and large and small bowel in the left pleural space passing through a traumatic defect in the hemidiaphragm. The laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication 3 years prior was felt to have contributed. A timely and correct diagnosis is essential to avoid the sequelae associated with these injuries and with inappropriate tube thoracostomy. D

Imperfections of continence do occur following low anterior resection (LAR), and may present with... more Imperfections of continence do occur following low anterior resection (LAR), and may present with increased stool frequency or varying degrees of incontinence. This impaired continence has been related to a fall in resting anal sphincteric pressure and may be secondary to a direct injury to the sphincter during transana] passage of the stapling device, or damage to its nerve supply at rectal mobilisation. We have studied the relative contribution of each mechanism to this anal sphineteric impairment, by comparing handsewn anastomoses (n = 7) to transanal stapled anastomoses (n = 7), in 14 dogs undergoing LAR. Anorectal manometry was performed preoperatively, and again on the 10th postoperative day.

Unlike quantitative data, qualitative data are not measured in terms of frequency or quantity but rather are examined for in-depth meanings and processes (Labuschagne, 2003). Interviews are widely used as a data collection tool in qualitative research. They are typically used as a research strategy to gather information about participants' experiences, views and beliefs concerning a specific research question or phenomenon of interest (Lambert and Loiselle, 2007). Sandelowski (2002) purports that one-to-one interviews are the most commonly used data collection tools in qualitative research.
