Dry box for my camera? |
[25.2.12 @ 6:54pm] |
How important is a dry box for my camera, especially since I'm living in a humid country (Singapore)?
Is an electronic dry box more effective than a normal one?
Previously when I wanted to get one a salesman told me it wouldn't be needed if I used my camera once in awhile. But it gets so humid here and I'm worried.

[12.10.11 @ 10:36am] |
I currently have a 14 MP P&S camera which I love but it has a long shutter lag and difficulty in low light. I want to eventually upgrade to a DSLR. Aside from the norm (image stabilization, higher ISO, better depth of field and color fidelity/clarity, more control) I would like more fps (current camera is a paltry 8 per minute), a true burst (I can fire off three shots now) and the capability of having wider angles with an affordable added lens. I am looking at an entry-level camera with a kit lens and have plans to buy an extra zoom and macro in the future to give me more versatility. Maybe a fisheye at some point too. I have no interest in a prime lens. If the camera has bells and whistles like spot metering and the capability of a wireless remote, all the better. I'm limiting my search to Cannon and Nikon. Dream cameras at the moment are Cannon EOS Rebel T3i with 18-55mm/3.5-5.6 IS lens or Nikon D5100 with 18-55 mm/AF-S DX Nikkor lens (these are both at the top of the range). I'm open to more affordable suggestions.

looking for a lens |
[5.10.11 @ 7:23pm] |
Hi!
I have a DSLR Canon 500 body, and until recently I've been using Sigma's 18-50mm F/3.5-5.6 lens as my standard, basic lens. I only had the one since I got my camera less than a year ago, didn't want the kit lens and that one was the best one I could afford for about 200$.
Unfortunately it broke recently, and now that I've been looking to replace it I can't find that lens anywhere, not online not in stores. I'm currently traveling in the US, and won't be going home for another two weeks. Ideally I'd like to order something online during those two weeks so I won't have to pay for shipping to my home country later, but don't know which lens to pick as a replacement for the 18-50.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Please?
Thank you!

Pop up tent studio |
[29.9.11 @ 4:16pm] |
Does anyone know where I can get one of these? The website I found it on isn't in the US, and they were selling lighting with it too, I only want the pop up cube. I've been searching and I can only find small ones for product photos, I want one that can fit a person.

Printing from a 6MP |
[3.8.11 @ 2:21pm] |
Hey guys,
I have a client who wants to print large canvas prints from a set of images I shot for her. I shot with my Pentax k110D, which is a 6MP. I've printed as large as 16 x 20 with quality from this camera (at 200 dpi), but I'd like to know what you guys think I can get away with, if she wants larger.
I have no experience printing on canvas - does it help my situation, in that it's a rough surface and any slight pixelation is going to be hidden better, or does it hurt somehow?
Separately, I need your opinion on pricing. I did not charge her for the shoot itself, and I spent over an hour getting the pictures (they were pictures of her horse).
She wants to buy some prints and some canvasses of the images, but she also asked me about getting a disc of the pictures. I couldn't tell from her e-mail if she wants a disc of all 350 pictures, or of just the 51 she selected as her favorites. I don't even know where to begin pricing this.

Freeze proof camera |
[17.7.11 @ 10:03pm] |
Hey everyone! I will be moving to Whistler later this year for the whole of the ski season and will be spending a ridiculous amount of time in the snow. I'm after a freeze proof and waterproof camera but don't really know where to look because I've never needed one before. Something not too expensive but takes good quality pictures. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

DSLR Camera Bags |
[6.7.11 @ 12:01am] |
Hi all! I'm looking to buy a new camera bag for an upcoming vacation, and I haven't had too much luck finding what I want from searching the internet. I'd like to be able to carry only one bag on day trips, so I'm looking for one with space for my camera (a Canon Rebel, which is not too big), another lens, and some extra space. Ideally, I think I'd like to have the camera and lens take up about half of the bag.
Does anyone know which brands make a bag like this? I've looked through the Lowepro bags already and didn't find anything suitable there.
Also: for those who have experience travelling with DSLRs, do you think it's a better idea to buy a small bag for just my camera and carry it inside a larger one, or look for a camera bag large enough to fit everything I need?
Thanks!

Suggestions on DSLR cameras |
[5.2.11 @ 11:34pm] |
Hi! I'm heading back to the United States for a few months and am interested in getting a DSLR while I'm out there since Korean DSLRs are all 1,000 and up. I'd really like some help/suggestions on what to buy.
I've heard a lot of good about Canon and Nikon, so currently I'm looking at models from them. I've played around with a 35mm back in high school, but after that I've just been stuck with digital cameras, so I don't know a lot about DSLRs. But I'm looking to buy a nice camera for my upcoming trip to Japan and for my job in Korea.
My price range is about $400 to $750. I'd prefer to spend about $500 to $650 though. I don't really care about video, but I'd like a good auto-zoom option and the motion blur control since sometimes my hands can be a little shaky while holding a camera.
Anyway, here are some models I am looking at:
Nikon D3000 ($554.90 on Amazon) http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D3000-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B002JCSV5I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1296968416&sr=8-
Canon EOS Rebel T1 ($650 on Amazon) http://www.amazon.com/Canon-T1i-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B001XURPQS/ref=sr_du_1_map?ie=UTF8&qid=1296969918&sr=8-1
Canon Rebel XS ($479 on Amazon) http://www.amazon.com/Canon-XS-Digital-18-55mm-Black/dp/B001CBKJGG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296965096&sr=8-1
What do you guys think of these brands? And if not these, are there any other you'd suggest around my price range? Thanks in advanced!

Choosing an SLR camera |
[1.1.11 @ 9:06pm] |
Hi, I'm going to be getting my first SLR camera soon and I'm torn between two models and would really love some help.
This will be my first SLR camera, I'm not a professional photographer but I've been taking photos with an Olympus 310 for years now and sort of feel like I've outgrown it, the options aren't enough for the kind of quality of images I'd like.
So, I'm thinking either:
* Canon EOS 500D / Digital Rebel T1i / EOS Kiss X3
or
* Canon EOS 550D / Digital Rebel T2i / EOS Kiss X4
the X3 is significantly cheaper than the X4 (by like 170$) so I'm wondering if the differences in the more advanced model are really worth all that, and at the same time I'm wondering if the X4 is actually worse for some things than the X3 (I understand the X4 doesn't have face recognition whereas the X3 does).
I've checked out the tech specs and the main difference I see listed is in the ISO speed, which is supposed to make night shooting easier (I know my friend who has an X3 complains only about the night shooting capabilities with that camera)?
Anyway, sorry for rambling! This is kind of a big invetment for me so I'm trying to be absolutely certain before deciding on a camera. Any and all feedback appriciated!

Tripod |
[20.9.10 @ 1:36pm] |
I'm interested in purchasing a tripod to use with my Nikon D3000 and my Canon powershot P&S. I am clueless about tripods, so forgive me if my questions seem silly.
My friend told me the ball head tripods are better to get, so that's what I am looking for. I'm interested in using it to take videos with my P&S and take macro and night shots with my DLSR.
Any suggestions for me? Are there brands I should completely avoid? Anything specific I should be looking for in a good tripod?
TIA.

Toy cameras question |
[12.9.10 @ 2:18pm] |
Are there any "toy cameras" that come with polaroid-type instant film? I've done some googling but I can't find the answer, there's so many different types of polaroid cameras.
ETA: I am considering a toy camera, the most popular seems to be the Holga. Just wondering if any take instant-film since I hate waiting for film to be developed.

*sigh* The shutter on my original Rebel (300D) is sticking, leaving the bottom half of every photo black. It's $190 to repair it through Canon (local shop quoted $225, so boo). Alternatively it's $340 for a refurbished XS Rebel through Canon's loyalty program (and I send my broken one to them). Funds for either option aren't present right now, but what would you do? Pay to repair the old one or pay a little more to buy a refurbished newer one?

Which lense to buy? |
[9.9.10 @ 2:44pm] |
I want to buy a new lense for my Canon camera. I will be using it for mostly portraiture work and studio work in the near future, hopefully.
What lense do you recommend:
EF 24-105mm f/4L OR EF 24-70mm f2.8L.
I currently have a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lense but I am not overly happy with it.
Can you also include your reasons why? I want to buy this lense within the next day.
Thanks! :)

Nikon vs. Canon? |
[4.9.10 @ 10:40am] |
I'm thinking about getting a DSLR, and my previous SLR experience was only with Canon.
The Canon in consideration is the EOS Rebel T1i (I don't have the bones to pay for the T2i)(/EOS 500D in other parts of the world).
The Nikon in consideration is the D5000DX (or just D5000, I have read the DX is just a tag-on).
Can you tell me which one you think is better? The Canon is 15.1 MP and has a higher ISO range (100-3200 at base, expandable to 6400 and 12,800); The Nikon is 12.3 MP and has only the basic ISO range (200-3200), but has a viewing screen that will tilt out for extreme camera shot angles. It doesn't have AF in the body, but I can't see if the Canon does either. It might just rely on the lens. Both have JPEG and RAW and only those. The video function on either I couldn't care less about.
The Canon doesn't come in a package deal, so I'd be getting the camera, the basic 18-55mm f3.5-f5.6 lens, an extra zoom lens (75-300mm), and a memory card.
The Nikon comes in the package deal with the Nikon, the base lens (about the same), a zoom lens (55-200mm), a memory card and a camera bag.
When all is said and done it's both about the same price (appx $1200). Help!
Note: What's really selling me on the Nikon is the auto sensor cleaning- the Canon doesn't have that. Is that really something I should be concerned about? If I am going to be switching lenses out (not very often, but it WILL happen)...?
Thanks in advance for your advice :3

quick question about a GDF-001 "camera".. |
[25.8.10 @ 4:43pm] |
hi all!
this is probably going to be one of the dumbest questions ever, but i was wondering if there is a GDF-001 camera from the '50s? i need a 35mm manual camera for my photography class this semester, and my teacher said to ask around. the only answer i received was "I have a GDF-001, but it's from the late 1950's." so i googled "GDF-001 camera" and the only results i'm getting talk about the Oerlikon 35 mm twin cannon, a Swiss anti-aircraft gun.
so, is there a camera called a GDF-001 or is this guy expecting me to pass my photography class using an anti-aircraft gun?
thank you!

Sand/particles in my camera lens? Anything I can do about it? |
[20.8.10 @ 5:27pm] |
Hi everyone, so I juuust had a Fujufilm FinePix F70EXR shipped from the US to where I live near Paris. The third time I took it out to use it, within one week of finally getting it, the 10x lens mysteriously wouldn't retract, telling me simply to turn the power off, and turn the camera back on. I'm fairly positive there are some particles or sand in it - I had taken it out near a beach the night before it stopped working, and while it was literally out for just a minute or two, there was a grain or two near the viewing screen of the camera when I noticed it stopped working.
When I took it out, it wasn't windy, I didn't touch the camera with sand on my hands at all, it wasn't even near the beach surface. It almost makes me think particles from inside my backpack somehow found their way into the camera bag I keep it in, which I thought was very protective, but not 100% sealed off from the outside.
Well, what do I do with my camera now? When I look online, I seem to get every possible response - from vacuum the camera, to tap the lens on a desk gently, with inevitable corresponding suggestions NOT to do every option suggested because it will damage the camera. I tried using the nozzle on a small vacuum around the lens to no avail. Can I have it repaired at a Fujufilm seller in Paris? Everyone tells me cameras are just too expensive/difficult to repair, and that I might as well just buy a new one, but if it's just going to break at the drop of a hat because sand somehow finds it's way into it...damn, that sucks. Never taking pictures anywhere near a coast again, I guess.
( warranty/shipping_issuesCollapse )
If any of you can provide some advice about what I can do to possibly fix it or have it repaired, it would be greatly appreciated. Being abroad and traveling without a working camera is just painful! Merci d'avance.
