The answer may lie in the bishops' concern for the maintenance of natural law. Their surviving records suggest that their real problem with the King was that by not fulfilling his obligation to good rule he did not keep this law, thereby upsetting the balance of the world. This was a risky practice when the last judgment of souls was thought to be very close. The bishops who remained close to de Montfort hoped he would enforce the balance of this law even if he ignored their personal grievances. They also felt a personal obligation to ensure he did so, an obligation which was part of the philosophical and theological beliefs they had obtained from the now deceased bishop of Lincoln, Robert Grosseteste

The gravamina were drafted by Robert Grosseteste, bishop of Lincoln 1235-1253, and declare that the king is ignoring universal, natural law, and man-made common law. They reveal Grosseteste's own view of the relationship between justice and natural law and how this should influence written law codes to ensure the salvation of mankind. Grosseteste interpreted the charters of liberties through natural law, as intended to bring common law and natural law into line with each other to make salvation possible through the exercise of justice. Magna Carta was now not an immediate solution to a local problem, but part of a universal, eternal concern. As the document was issued in the names of all the episcopate they also consented to this view.

When medieval matrices were impressed into soft wax, handprints were often left on the reverse of the seal. The use of modern forensic techniques to capture and compare these prints provides evidence about the process of sealing and its relationship to the individual matrix owner. Seals with the same print on the reverse could be impressed with different matrices, and impressions of the same matrix have different prints on the reverse. The impressing of the matrix was not, then, as has been claimed, the responsibility of the matrix owner as the only way to impress their identity into the wax. This evidence allows a reappraisal of administrative developments in sealing, and the separation of the process of sealing from both the performance of livery of seisin and the seal owner.

They demonstrate the development of the episcopal household and the redefinition of the relationship between the bishop and his cathedral chapter. The later acta also shed light on the impact of the Baronial Rebellion of the 1260s. The volume contains the acta of three bishops: William of Blois; the eminent Walter de Cantilupe, friend of the great Robert Grosseteste and spiritual adviser to Simon de Montfort; and Nicholas of Ely, both royal treasurer and chancellor, later bishop of Winchester.

The study of Grosseteste's career as a diocesan bishop has been hampered by the relative inaccessibility of the records of his episcopate, published in an unsatisfactory edition in 1911 and long out of print. This completely new edition of Grosseteste's episcopal rolls makes it possible to take a fresh look at how he tackled the vexed issues of clerical ignorance, pluralism and non-residence in the aftermath of the reforms of the Lateran Council of 1215. They are presented here with an introductory study and elucidatory notes.
