Reaction Engineering International (REI) has been funded by the US Department of Energy (under co... more Reaction Engineering International (REI) has been funded by the US Department of Energy (under cooperative agreement DE-FC26-00NT40753) to carry out a program titled "NO x Control Options and Integration for US Coal Fired Boilers." The overall goal of the program is to evaluate and demonstrate low cost NO x control strategies and to study the potential impact of these NO x control technologies on overall electric utility boiler performance. One of the tasks in this program is called "SCR Performance Under Cofiring Conditions." The objective of this task is to develop a deeper understanding of the operating costs of SCR with regard to catalyst deactivation from alkali and alkaline earth elements. The focus is on subbituminous fuels and coal-biomass co-firing, both instances in which the alkali or alkaline earth metals in the fuel may have a harmful effect on SCR catalysts. REI is working with Brigham Young University (BYU) and the University of Utah (UU) to carry out this work.

Experimental results of cryogenic CO2 removal from natural gas by desublimation in a staged heat exchanger

ABSTRACT This paper describes and provides initial experimental results for a new purification me... more ABSTRACT This paper describes and provides initial experimental results for a new purification method for raw natural gas (NG) streams. The method removes CO 2, NG liquids, H2S, and most other NG impurities as desublimation or condensation products. The focus of this paper is on CO 2. Desublimation occurs in a patent-pending, desublimating heat exchanger that operates efficiently and continuously and uses a contacting liquid as an intermediate stream. The contacting liquid provides a non-fouling desublimation surface and direct-contact heat transfer, making it both robust and efficient in continuous operation. The solid CO2 and contact liquid form a slurry until separated through filtration or other solid-liquid physical separation methods. The contact liquid cools in a conventional heat exchanger and recycles to the desublimating heat exchanger. The cold purified CO2 and purified natural gas products pass through a regenerative heat exchanger to cool incoming raw natural gas, melting the purified solid CO2 stream in the process. This process is capable of operating at various pressures and temperatures, both of which affect the final impurity levels. Compared to conventional CO2 removal processes, this process does not require changes in process pressure and does not involve condensation or reboiling in a distillation column. It also combines what currently are several operating steps into a single process. These features decrease overall energy losses and both capital and operating expenses.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to outline the potential role of biomass for power generati... more ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to outline the potential role of biomass for power generation. The fuels and technologies are critically reviewed to establish a pathway for increasing power production from biomass as part of an increased contribution from renewable energies. Policy and economic issues establish near-term and long-term priorities and issues. Technologies include biomass cofiring with coal, traditional dedicated biomass power plants, and advanced systems. Fuels include wood residues, agricultural residues and energy crops. The result is a comprehensive roadmap for introducing biomass power that minimizes the cost and impact to society while optimizing the implementation of biomass and other residues. Relatively low-risk options such as cofiring and sustaining use of existing dedicated facilities are seen as the best near-term technologies. Residues are seen as the best first-step fuels. Advanced systems and energy crops are seen as essential components if power generation will ever approach sustainable levels.

Cryogenic Carbon Capture (CCC) is a CO2 mitigation process that can be integrated into existing b... more Cryogenic Carbon Capture (CCC) is a CO2 mitigation process that can be integrated into existing baseline and load following fossil-fueled power plants. This process consumes less energy than conventional chemical absorption and includes energy storage capability. The CCC process has a fast response time to load changes to allow higher utilization of intermittent renewable power sources to be used at a grid-scale level in the power sector. The impact of the CCC process on the performance and operating profit of a single fossil-fueled power generation unit is studied in this paper. The proposed system (power production from wind, coal, and natural gas) meets the total electricity demand with 100% utilization of the available wind energy. The operational strategy for the hybrid energy-carbon capture system and the change in the performance of the hybrid system due to the seasonal changes are also examined in this paper. A sensitivity analysis is implemented to investigate the change in operating strategy of the hybrid system based on the relative fraction of wind energy adoption. The optimal wind energy adoption factor in the proposed system is obtained.
