The slides for my #EuroBSDCon talk are now online. The presentation is about the rc ecosystem in FreeBSD (i.e., the init system, service scripts, etc.).
1-800-RC(8)-HELP: Dial Into FreeBSD Service Scripts Mastery!: https://papers.freebsd.org/2024/eurobsdcon/piotrowski-1-800-rc-8-help-dial-into-freebsd-service-scripts-mastery/
@bcantrill Has anyone presented you with the different stylizations that NVIDIA has had over the years?
I’m pretty sure it’s a case of brand-dating, where you can tell when someone got involved with it, by how it’s stylized, as they’ve variously used nVIDIA, nVidia, Nvidia, and NVIDIA over the years.
@jimsalter The #ripe atlas nodes that @allanjude mentioned on #25admins do exist all over the world - for example, here’s the round-trip time to a bunch of fixed destinations: https://atlas.ripe.net/results/maps/rtt-fixed/
They "recently" (meaning since I last checked) also implemented a software probe, that you can throw at your hypervisor: https://atlas.ripe.net/docs/howtos/software-probes.html
So now there’s no excuse

@mwlucas Are milters covered in the mail bible?
MachineA: would you like to hear a #UDP joke?
MachineB: that sounds lovely, yes please!
MachineA: THAT'S MY PURSE, I DON'T KNOW YOU!
@jimsalter I've been going through old episodes of #25admins and in one you mentioned putting up a httpd listening on 80 and 443, but if the goal is to ensure that a DNS lookup doesn't go through, a better solution is to simply NXDOMAIN the entire thing.
This is also exactly what https://github.com/cyclaero/void-zones-tools does.
@[email protected] There’s at least one person who appreciates your Unix jokes.
Though getting a PDP-11 up and running now just to run hack would be quite a feat, and I’d love to see it done.
Nethack could almost run on a dumb terminal.
My #FreeBSD port security/portacl-rc just landed.
It's a friendlier alternative to configuring mac_portacl, which allows fine-grained control over who gets to bind to privileged ports. e.g. to run a webserver as user www:
sysrc portacl_users+=www portacl_user_www_tcp="http https" portacl_user_www_udp="https"
service enable portacl
service start portacl
Plan is to knock any rough edges off, make sure the bikeshed is an agreeable colour, and get it into base.
Just finished watching a vlog by @Graham_LRR in which he mentions light sensitivity, and that made me remember that I experience light sensitivity much stronger after chemo than I did before going through #cancer therapies back in 2016.
So now I can't help but wonder if that's more common than I assumed.
@jimsalter Regarding the 2.5 admins conversation on the question of when we’re gonna get away from dual-stacked IPv4+IPv6, I once made some statistical calculations which suggested that IPv6 would experience address space exhaustion before we got completely rid of IPv4.
Naturally there were a bunch of assumptions about life-cycles that I had to make and which have since changed, but I’m not convinced it isn’t still a worry.. ![]()
When will videos from #BornHack be going live?
It was thirty years ago today...
Well, actually yesterday, but FreeBSD is 30 years old now!
(Warning: Contains me)
I'm not sure it's possible to find a piece of #music that's more got more feeling of summer to it than Groove Armada's use of two 50s samples for a vocal and a brass instrument combined with a sample from the 80s of a drum beat.
