Back to the Brushes 365

An update on Roman Cataphracts for ADLG - a bit of base manipulation to sort out four horses per base. This is possible as the War and Empire (Forged in Battle) figures are a wee bit smaller than some of their other 15mm counter-parts.

The armoured horses so far - those painted all started prior to the  beginning of AHPC XIII - another six to get into the painting queue.

The riders have been added to see how things look with four horses and there us room enough without cramming them in. Will be spending a bit of time on these shortly.

The horse head to the left of the pic is from a PSC 15mm horse that is much bigger than the War and Empire figure. Scale creep, its a bugger but not much you can do about it.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 360

First session for this year's Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge XIII sees the base flesh painted on the first three rows of figures below. The rear rows  - excluding the command stand on the left of screen - have been painted before the start date and will not be included in the tally towards my Challenge points.

The figures are mostly Corvus Belle scuplts with both PSC Ultracasts and metals in the mix. The command figures are a mix of both 3D print and metal casts.

Tomorrow night's session will see the armour and tunics taking colour after some searches for Batavian colour schemes for Early Imperial Roman auxilia.

Cheers for now.

30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge - August 2021 Round up

Round up for August's 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge below. Quite simply ran out of steam on the third rider for the Thessalians

In the above picture there are the following:

2 x 28mm cavalry riders only - Thessalians from Foundry

2 x 28mm infantry  - Normans from Foundry

2 x 28mm infantry - British and Fallschrimjager from Warlord Games

4 x 15mm cavalry - Bedouin from Museum Miniatures

Above there are:

12 x 15mm infantry - Early Imperial Romans from PSC

6 x 15mm cavalry - Ghulams from Minifigs (?)

1 x 20mm scenery piece

12 x 15mm infantry - Minifigs (?)

This gives a total of 41, not 39 as shown in the pics, tsk, tsk.

Got a bit of basing to do in the coming weeks!

Stay safe and cheers for now

Imperium Sine Fine 30

Painted during the AHPC XI earlier this year the Roman Auxiliaries below have been painted and based as Medium Infantry for DBA/ADLG

Somewhere in amongst the Ultracast masses lurks a figure from the original Corvus Belli range. However, without the figures here to check for heft, there is no way of telling.

The shield decals are from VVV and reverting back to waterslide made the process much smoother than the rub on/offs from Little Big Men. Not as pretty mind you but certainly quicker and less fiddly.

The bases have been covered with Geek Gaming Scenics base ready range then additional scenic scater added to brighten ever thing up. The block and wash method of painting used for these can leave the figures looking a bit sombre.

Need to pick up the pace on this army and start on the legionnaires and cavalry. There may be an opportunity to paint a bit more in the next few weeks so will see what comes of it.

Hope you found this interesting and stay safe.

Cheers for now

Imperium Sine Fine 27

Recently completed and posted to the AHPC XI this post has a mixture of supporting troop types for an ongoing project in 15mm: Early Imperial Romans.

Unlike many projects this was initially down to luck. The luck being, getting a PSC Ultra Cast EIR box set off evil Bay at a very reasonable price. Then luck followed luck as a good number of Corvus Belle EIR figures came up on the same again at reasonable prices, allowing the force to be expanded to cover DBA and an ADLG army too, well nearly.

Making a conscious effort with this army to paint it by troop types starting with light infantry, in this case archers, slingers, javelin-men and a pair of scorpions to finish off the shooty death section. So without any more rambling on here are the finished figures:

Eight javelin armed skirmisher from the War and Empire range produced by Forged in Battle. Painted in drab colours to mark their status as lower classed troops.

The bases are textured using Geek Gaming Scenics Base ready Patch Plains mixed then flocked with 2mm static grass to add colour and interest. This is a new process for 15mm figures and cuts out the need to glue sand, ink wash then dry brush the sand before flocking; its quicker and gives a good finish once over flocked.

Next are eight slingers that are also from Forged in Battle. Both sets sit well beside the PSC 15mm figures if a little chunkier.

The first of the PSC Ultra Cast figures with six skirmishing archers covering a scorpion and two crew.

Once painted and at a distance there is no way of telling if these are metal or not. That is until they are picked up as there is practically no weight to them. That said the figures paint up well and provide a good basis for the core of an Early Imperial Roman army. It's a pity that the infantry and cavalry are only available in the boxed sets.

Below is a group picture of the army so far with figures painted pre December 21st 2020 including two stands of three archers, three additional stands of skirmishing archers and a second scorpion. These are not included in the points total below.

Both the archers above and the scorpion below have been painted before the start date and are shown pre-black edge painting.

So, there are a total of twenty four foot figures and 1 crewed weapon in 15mm giving a start to the points total of 52 or 8.67% of the target total of 600 points. Now it's time to start prepping the auxilia infantry with 38 figures waiting in the wings.

Hope that you find these of interest and stay safe!
