This 8-week summer course, developed jointly by faculty at the Chinese University of Hong Kong an... more This 8-week summer course, developed jointly by faculty at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Brown University, begins with 4 weeks in Hong Kong exploring the ways that individuals and institutions are working to preserve the cityǯs cultural heritage. Through a series of seminars and site visits, students will engage with the complex political and economic relationships between heritage management, urban renewal and ecotourism.

First, I hope we all gain an understanding of the different definitions of, approaches to, and uses of material culture in different disciplines. Secondly, we will critically examine the broad range of sources and methods used by historians, Americanists, archaeologists, and other material culture specialists in narrating history(ies). Thirdly, in individual, focused research projects, I hope each student will make an original contribution to the ³materiality of history´ in American Studies or Museum Studies.
This course will explore the national museum as a cultural institution in a range of contrasting ... more This course will explore the national museum as a cultural institution in a range of contrasting national contexts, revealing how these museums have been used to create a sense of national self, deal with the consequences of political change, remake difficult pasts, and confront those issues of nationalism, postcolonialism and multiculturalism which have come to the fore in national politics in recent decades.
