As he approached his hundredth year, the doyen of world anthropology convinced himself that no et... more As he approached his hundredth year, the doyen of world anthropology convinced himself that no ethnographic museum could offer its visitors an authentic image of societies totally different from our own. Objects he collected in Brazil, which he presented to the incipient Musée de l'Homme, he now found to have merely documentary interest; the death of cultures was a good and sufficient reason to approve the mutation of the ethnographic museum into an art museum. So Claude Lévi-Strauss gave his blessing to the death of the Musée de l'Homme and the birth of the scandalous Musée du Quai Branly (a story splendidly told in Benoît de L'Estoile's Le Goût des autres ).

Laurent Lemoine was a pirate who escaped to Rodrigues from a pursuing British ship. He anchored t... more Laurent Lemoine was a pirate who escaped to Rodrigues from a pursuing British ship. He anchored there and hid his treasure, which is probably still there. Subsequently, Lemoine murdered some Portuguese seamen off Mozambique and took refuge in Mauritius. Having been denounced, arrested, and released for lack of evidence, and being about to die, he gave away his treasure map. It was too complicated for anyone to use. Like any good legend teller, the historian of Rodrigues makes the story real with a vivid detail. He records the name of one man who tried to find Lemoine's treasure in 1907: L. N. Cauvin, a clerk of the Eastern Telegraph Company. 2 Legends like this, told as true and containing motifs found in similar stories around the world 3 , are well known in Mauritius. Less well known is the fact that these legends, along with folktales, riddles, proverbs, folksongs, beliefs, customs, cookery, houses, and folk speech, constitute the buried treasure of Mauritian life and history. A long established habit of discounting Mauritian culture in favor of India or Europe, a prejudice in favor of literacy and learning and against orality, a class-based condescension towards working people, and the powerful effect of television have all kept Mauritius's treasures under ground. It is time they were dug up and evaluated. When they are, the buried treasures of Mauritian folklore will have much to say about power and marginality.
