Computers, Comics, and Close Calls

fayoreix2 says that I need to make lots of entries with tags this summer because my law school tag is disturbingly large compared to the others. I've noticed the same thing and I'm inclined to agree with her, so I'm going to focus on getting back into the habit of daily entries.

Two of my aunts came by today. They stayed a little while and I offered them tea (I'm very excited about this tea thing :-)), but one didn't like tea (How can you not like ANY tea?) and the other had already eaten. Plus, it started raining so they left. However, it turns out that my cousin's daughter loves "tea parties" so I told them they'd have to bring her down next time she visits her grandmother (my aunt) and we'd have one. I'm sure that would be so much fun.

After that, Mom and I headed over to Knoxville to get her computer (and for me to sell some books). Knoxville has this amazing used book, CD, DVD, game, whatever store called McKays. You drop off a load of books, they sort them, you browse, then you come back and they give you a choice of either a voucher for more books or cash. Today, I could have gotten $30 in cash, but I found a ton of stuff that I wanted, so I went for the $50 dollar voucher.

First, I found several comic trade paperbacks, including the first three volumes of Sandman, which I've been meaning to read. I also got the first Hellblazer book and a Fantastic Four book that looked good. After that, I found the first season of Tru Calling and the Super Mario Bros. show. At the checkout, they also had the complete series of Stargate SG-1. The only problem is that I only have ten days to return them if there's a problem. Besides visually inspecting them all for scratches, any suggestions on how to test the discs, short of watching them all?

After that, we got Mom a computer. We went with a Mac because I think it would be pretty user friendly for her, I want to use it to play around with some video editing and photo stuff, and they also have the one-on-one training for $99 a year for unlimited one hour sessions. Since she's a retired teacher, we also got an educator's discount.

I found out a weird thing when I went for chocolate. For some reason, Tennessee liquor law prohibits selling things like rum and champagne truffles. I have no idea why, but I was pretty disappointed. I love rum truffles.

After eating (McCallister's) that, we hit Borders, which is where the close call happened. I've mentioned earlier that Mom had a major stroke about four and a half years ago. She's more or less okay, but she was paralyzed completely on the left side of her body when it happened. She's still a bit unsteady on her feet and can't really use her left arm all that well. Anyway, she sneezed and that put her off balance, so she fell. I turned around to see it happen and her head hit the wall. She seems okay, though, but I'm keeping a really close eye on her. It was extremely scary after it happened.

While Mom was resting (I didn't want to drive home till I was sure everything was okay), I looked around and Borders was having a promotion where you got a $10 dollar gift card with a $50 dollar purchase. I grabbed a few things, including volumes 4 & 5 of Fables (I love that series) and the last book I needed to complete my summer reading list (Seize the Day by Saul Bellows).

So, that's more or less my day. I still have a tension headache from what happened earlier, but I'm going to get some rest and hope it eases off.

A Good Monday

What a rare event.

Nothing much happened today. Ashley and I played Guitar Hero 3 and Left 4 Dead until the wee hours, then my aunt came over and we had tea. We used the new Butterfly Meadows tea set I bought and drank Lavender Earl Grey. We all really enjoyed it and we're making plans to do more later in the future...which means that I want to buy more tea stuff! :-)

I went to the mall today and found out that the comic book shop/game store has moved to a smaller location (I haven't been in a while) and now has very few comics. Very disappointing, though I picked up a Cable and some new G.I. Joe stuff.

I also stopped in Bookland to see if they happened to have the rest of the books on my reading list. Even though it's pretty small, I managed to get most of the remaining books I needed. I think I need two more. The guy and I also started talking about comics and he gave me the name of a website that he used to order comics from (good selection and much cheaper). I plan to check it out soon.

More Culture

Or, at least, more cultural property...

I just started the sixth (of fifteen) pages. I also realized that I'm doing it in 11 point font, so I'm probably much father along. It's coming fairly easily right now, since I'm mostly just summarizing law. I'm hoping that by doing this, I'll somehow get things organized enough to come up with a really dazzling conclusion.

Or, at least, I can hope.

I'm hoping to be at the halfway point by tomorrow night. Right now, I need to get ready for bed because it's past midnight and 5:30AM is going to come awfully early tomorrow.

Also, I finally read Marvel Zombies. Interesting title. Extremely gory and I'm impressed that it didn't descend into the ridiculous.
