Review: The Pastor’s Easter Prayer by Tina Radcliffe

This story was very uplifting. It is part of a multi-author series, but these books can be enjoyed on their own, too.

Rob’s tragic event may have occurred four years earlier, but he is still carrying around guilt and pain about what happened. I felt it was very honest to show that even though Rob was a pastor, this loss had shaken his faith and made him unsure about what role he should play in people’s lives. He had checked out of life for awhile, simply going through the motions, and it was refreshing to see him pretty much begin to come alive again in this story.

Rob and Hannah’s romantic relationship grew gently and naturally within the story and it was fun to see how well he bonded with Hannah’s children.

This was the first book that I read in the series and I enjoyed getting to know the setting and the people of Tumbleweed, Texas.

(4.5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Review: Smoke and Ash by Savannah Scott

I adore the brother’s best friend and best friend’s brother tropes and this book had them both! So, you know I was loving it from start to finish!

The mutual pining was strong for both of these two at the beginning of the story, when both Carli and Cody were separately wishing that there was a way for them to end up with the one person who was off-limits. And there was also some great pining throughout the rest of the book, when they were together but had to remain separate when around family and friends. I was shocked at the chances they sometimes took to steal a kiss when they just couldn’t stand to be apart for any longer!

I really felt for Cody and Carli. I understood why they wanted to keep the beginnings of the relationship quiet and have something that was just their own for awhile as they stepped into the idea of trying out what it would be like for them to be “more”. Their secret meetups and time spent together were some of the sweetest moments. It was clear that they not only worked well as a couple, but having known each other already for so long, moving to a romantic relationship ended up being the most natural thing in the world for them to do.

There was, inevitably, a fall out when both Carli’s brother, Jace, and Cody’s sister, McKenna, found out. But I thought that Cody and Carli ended up handling all of that very well, too.

This story was so much fun to read and was definitely a book that I didn’t want to set down.

(5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I also purchased my own print copy. All opinions are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK

If you saw Cody Buckner on a horse, you’d understand my obsession with him.

I’ve spent most of my life pretending I don’t have a thing for the rancher next door.
He’s my brother’s best friend.
My best friend’s brother.
And now—because fate clearly hates me—he’s the firefighter I have to work alongside as Waterford’s newest fire inspector.

Cody Buckner is steady where I’m stubborn, calm where I’m chaos, and way too good at showing up when I’m trying to keep my distance. Especially now, with my family ranch hanging by a thread.

Around here, everyone’s got a front-row seat to everyone else’s business, and gossip travels faster than a brush fire. One look, one slip, and the whole town would know exactly how I feel about Cody.

But every time those brown eyes find mine, my whole list of reasons why we can’t be together just … goes up in smoke.

Smoke and Ash is the third standalone romcom in the Firemen of Waterford TN series. This story is a closed-door romance with kisses that just might need a fire extinguisher.

Review: Taming Lady Temperance by Karen Witemeyer

What a great start to a new series! I really enjoyed the emotional and spiritual growth of Noreen’s character throughout the novel. She was definitely all fired up and determined to do all that she could to work for the cause of temperance. She had a complex background with a lot of hurt and anger that she carried around. It was wonderful to see the impact James had on helping her to change her perspective a bit and give more of the control over to God.

I loved the way James began to see Noreen for who she really was. When these two began to open up to each other, they just had the sweetest hearts! I loved James’ devotion to Noreen and how openly he began to show her that he cared.

I’m looking forward to reading future books in this series. The author did a good job of creating a vibrant community with many interesting side characters.

(4.5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When passion for justice conflicts with the heart, which will prevail?

Noreen O’Sullivan is an enthusiastic member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and believes herself called to defend the cause of prohibition. When she’s invited to join the Secret Society of Spinsters, Noreen jumps at the chance to rally others to her movement and shut down the local saloon for good. However, her passionate campaigning often puts her at odds with the men around her–including the local deputy.

Deputy James Paxton believes in preserving the peace, but Miss O’Sullivan has been disturbing his peace for months. If James wants to be elected sheriff, he can’t afford to be seen as her ally. But when Noreen ropes him into helping her plan a temperance march, their growing closeness sparks unexpected feelings. Then tensions escalate at the saloon and accusations fly. James must choose between upholding his badge and protecting the woman who’s captured his heart–knowing either choice could cost him everything.

Karen Witemeyer presents a swoony Western romance with a determined heroine, cowboys, prohibition, and the rivals-to-lovers and duty vs. desire tropes. Fans of Mary Connealy and frontier romances set in the Old West will savor this clean, historical read.

Audio Book Review: Marriage is a Shore Thing by Laura Langa

*This review has been updated for the audio version*

This book continues to be a favorite of mine. I adored the audio version. The narrators did such a great job of bringing this delightful marriage of convenience to life.

As with the first time I read it, I was drawn in again to the romance that built between Van and Geneva. They ended up being exactly what each other needed, not only for support and love, but also for healing from the things they had gone through.

This book just makes me so happy to read or listen to!

***

Well, I absolutely adored this novel! Van and Geneva were so fulfilling to read about. Even though Van is going through a time of intense grief, Geneva with all of her snarky ways, is helping to pull him through.

And Geneva, the woman who has walls so high and a heart that she protects at all cost, can’t help herself from falling for this man who seems to want to be there for her in any way she needs him to be.

I really felt for Geneva and the way she had been treated by her parents and even those she had considered friends in the past. It was no surprise that she was emotionally wounded. But Van was just the man to break through those walls and show her that he loved her for who she was, grumpy or not.

Their love story, which began with finding out that they actually were accidentally married, was such a joy to read. I can’t stop thinking about these wonderful characters!

(5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK

She’s tough. He’s golden. One dare later, they’re hitched.

I’ve sworn off love, so accidentally marrying a stranger after a friendly game of Truth or Dare? Worst. Case. Scenario. Never mind that Evander Young is a brilliant ER doctor with a dimpled smile that makes my heart race.

News of our nuptials spreads through my small beach town like wildfire—only everyone thinks it’s real after a long-distance romance. With my mom ecstatic that her grumpy, boxing-instructor daughter has finally found love, it looks like we’re stuck playing house—at least for now.

The thing is, happily-ever-afters aren’t for people who avoid feelings like they’re a knockout punch. But Van’s golden-retriever energy keeps chipping at my well-forged armor, and the sizzling chemistry between us? Definitely not fake.

When a family heirloom goes missing, Van and I team up for a midnight heist—sneaking through shadows, racing against time, and dodging a few close calls. Turns out, the real risk isn’t the heist—it’s falling for my accidental husband.

Review: Mail-Order Baroness by Misty M. Beller

This sweet story was heartwarming. Poor Rose had been ripped from an idyllic life on the Balfour ranch and forced into a terrible life for the remainder of her childhood and early adult years. I felt so sorry for all that she had endured and the way she had been treated.

And I really felt for James, too. He was such a kind and caring man who had always wondered what had happened to the childhood friend that he loved. His determination and focus to help Rose was admirable and he proved his strength and love for her again and again as he did anything necessary to keep her safe.

This story is also a nice addition to the Lords of the Rockies series, however it can be enjoyed even if you haven’t read the first book.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Five sons of an English duke, all raised in the Rocky Mountains…

James Balfour, the charming middle son of an English duke, is determined to prove he’s capable of taking leadership of his family’s Montana ranch as the next deadly winter approaches. Rose’s remarkable singing voice was meant to be her gift, but in Virginia City, it’s become her curse. Forced by her stepfather to perform nightly shows, she dreams of escape and a life free from his control. When a newspaper ad for a housekeeper offers her a way out, she risks everything and flees, hoping her stepfather can’t find her. She never expected to return to the Balfour ranch, nor to see James again, whose charm now reminds her too much of the men who’ve betrayed her before.

James’s desire to protect Rose is shaken when his old friend treats him like an enemy. Winning her trust becomes his greatest challenge yet. As tensions rise on the ranch, old secrets and new dangers threaten everything James and his family have built.

With enemies closing in, Rose must decide whom she can trust—and whether she’s willing to fight for the freedom and love she’s always longed for.

Review: Even After This by Deborah Clack

Wow! This story was incredible!

Even After This deals with some extremely heavy topics and a woman who has been clawing her way through grief for the past four years.

The author did a wonderful job of creating a storyline that fully acknowledged a continual type of grief while also adding hope, love, support, and strength in there, as well. There was so much that I loved about this tale.

I loved that Meredith found love again after all that she had endured. She didn’t go looking for it and didn’t even know if it was possible for her to open her heart again, but she ended up with a man who did all that he could to understand what she needed and never belittled the emotions that she had to work through on a constant basis. Oh…and that man happened to be a major movie star! I love those celebrity romances and this one was its own extra kind of wonderful.

Harlan and Meredith had to work through a lot in this story and I savored every minute of it, even though many of those minutes were painful, because it helped to build a beautiful relationship between them that would be stronger for all of the tears that were shed.

My Review

I really felt for Nolan and Addie. These two had known each other for years and had been there for each other in difficult situations, yet as feelings moved from friendship to more, they were both unsure about what to do.

Addie had some issues that arose in her marriage to her late husband. Now she was determined not to be anyone’s second choice in life. And it was clear that baseball was Nolan’s first choice. Yet, Nolan was battling his own troubling thoughts. The fear that he wouldn’t recover after his devastating injury left him at loose ends. Could he ever love something or someone more than baseball? What was his purpose in life if he lost the game that had always meant so much to him?

These two had great chemistry together and it was sweet to see how good Nolan was with Addie’s son. Add in a friendship and truly caring for the well being of each other and it made for such a great story!

Can love blossom between a woman haunted by her family’s past and a man haunted by the trauma of war?

Cora Scott is determined to hold onto her family’s Texas ranch and provide a stable home for her young half-brother, Charlie, despite the mounting challenges of post-Civil War frontier life. But when a scheming creditor threatens to seize their land, she must accept help from Ben McKenzie, a former Yankee soldier sent by her late brother. Excerpt

Cora sank against Ben’s chest like parched earth soaking up rain, her body trembling almost as much as Ben’s battered one. He could have been killed. A chill swept over her body. Her hands dug into the back of Ben’s rumpled undershirt and held on tight. Thank God, Ben was alive, standing, and breathing. Thank God, they hadn’t taken Charlie. That they were all still here safe.

Charlie came alongside and hugged them both.

Ben slipped one hand from Cora and wrapped his arm around the boy’s shoulders.

Jack scurried around their feet, panting.

Safe. Cora bit her lip and squeezed her eyes shut. She choked back a sob. She wouldn’t cry. Strong and steady beneath the hard wall of his chest, Ben’s heart pounded against her cheek. His warmth permeated the dirty linen of his shirt and the thin cotton of her chemise, drawing her like a magnet.

Moisture dropped onto the back of her head. A metallic smell. Blood.

Her breath caught. What was she thinking? Releasing her hold, she pulled back a few inches, her hands still lingering on his sides as if they belonged there. “You’re bleeding.” Every inch of her wobbled.

Coworker. Coworker. Coworker.

It was good he had missed coffee with Gwen that morning. After all, if her pale green eyes had flashed in the morning light with him, well, he would be concerned about the shadows dimming her compelling gaze now. He might even want to get involved.

Review: Marrying the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund

What a fantastic fake relationship story with very real chemistry! The pining in this book was just the right blend of wanting and needing the relationship to be real while being certain that it couldn’t be.

I liked that Bellamy and Zaira had known each other for years. It was fun to read about how they viewed each other over the years. But to read about the way they saw each other in the present portion of the story was so sweet.

Their kisses were supposedly fake, but the awakening in both of them to feelings they were denying just jumped off of the page. I was so happy for these two when they finally acknowledged their feelings! This book was packed with sweet moments!

(5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK

As the middle child of the Shanahan family, Zaira does her best to keep the peace. She doesn’t share her dream of becoming a published author with her family to spare herself their disapproval. When she’s caught in a scandal involving the local matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna, she must put her storytelling ability to good use and feign a match with him to avoid wagging tongues and her parents’ anger.

Feeling the growing pressure to marry as a well-known, yet single matchmaker to St. Louis’s Irish community, Bellamy reluctantly agrees to a temporary match with Zaira. But even though the matchmakers in his family might be able to find love for others, they have a history of disastrous relationships for themselves. When secrets and danger force Zaira and Bellamy to work together, is it finally the matchmaker’s turn to be lucky in love?

Hedlund delivers another captivating romance with sizzling chemistry in this romantic conclusion to her beloved matchmaking series.
