Back in the Bag: Essays exploring artefacts in honour of David Wynn Williams. Edited by Dot Boughton and Kayt Hawkins, Mar 2022

Its purpose is to enable museums to acquire these finds for public benefit. In practice the administration of cases reported under this law is not possible without the Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs) of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). Using examples from David Williams’ long involvement with the Treasure process, this paper illustrates how integral the FLO is to its operation.

The 80 coins were found in 2007 by residents who were digging in their back garden, and investigative work revealed them to be the savings of a German-Jewish refugee who had come to Britain in 1938, Martin Sulzbacher. Thankfully, the coins were able to be reunited with the Sulzbacher family.

Prior to 1996, only a handful of vervels were to be found in museum collections, mentioned in the archaeological literature, or discussed in historic treatises. The vervels featured here present an exciting new source of data, since their places of discovery have in most cases been precisely noted. These can be looked at in the context of the individuals with whom the vervels are identified, and we can gain increased insight into the practice of falconry in the late Medieval and Post-Medieval periods. These vervels also allow us to ask new questions, such as why is there a seeming lack of female ownership of birds of prey, given that in the Medieval period they are regularly shown to participate in the sport.
